Can we label Marc Burch a success now, please? The guy's a real asset in the back. He's got all the
touch, pace, vision, and service of a quality left-footed forward while maintaining competent
defense. It's not like he's ousting anyone from the left-back position (I'm sure Gros is happy to
move up, and judging by the scoreline, so are we), but Marc Burch has made a real name for himself
and I don't see him on the bench any time soon.
Hey people. Sorry I've been AWOL for a bit, but with the lack of real news to report, I've been
directly my attention towards baseball, and my Washington Nationals blog. Anyway, here's a rundown
of what's happened since we were summarily booted out of the postseason.
Tickle Though there are no certain things in life or in futbol, the US has been handed a fairly
easy road to the Hexagonal in CONCACAF's World Cup qualifying dance . . . In other qualifying news,
plenty of enticing match-ups abound. England gets another chance to fail miserably against Croatia,
the Koreas square off in the Asian group stages, and the Aussies jump the Oceania ship for Asia,
A flurry of trades as the Expansion Draft overhaul gets picked apart. It was pretty much a given
that defensive midfielder Brian Carroll was going to move on after being picked by San Jose and
having a somewhat sketchy year in D.C.
Columbus gets Carroll for - in my opinion - a rather low price, forward Kei Kamara.
The San Jose Earthquakes traded Brian Carroll to the Columbus Crew today, right after he was
selected in the MLS Expansion draft. Kei Kamara was shipped out to San Jose in return.
Considering that no one is really safe in MLS (ask Alecko Eskandarian or Cleetus) a trade this
quick after being selected by Yallop isn't a shock.
Notice that it's not "Bent Over by Beckham". True, he did hit a good free-kick. Also true, he
steered a "dagger ball" through the United back line for the Gals second. But - Perkins was caught
admiring the "bend" on Beck's free-kick when he should have been busy trying to save it, and Gros
is not a defender. Is Soehn even watching his team? Gros has looked miserable to moderately bad as
a left back all season, and yet was borderline man-of-the-match when he pushed up onto the wing in
the last two MLS matches.
"I don't know. There wasn't a lot of controversy today. D.C. won."
- classy New England forward Taylor Twellman speaks the truth
"...Kenny had won the ball and was about to move on and Olsen kicked his back leg. It was clear as
day, but the ref moved on."
- punk-ass Revolution thug...sorry - defender - Jay Heaps (of Manure) making excuses as
usual
Just a few things that stuck to my admittedly well-lubricated brain yesterday:
Houston Dynamo 1 : 0 D.C. United
Six Word Novel Recap
Inspiration doesn't strike us. Ching did.
Media, Traditional and OtherwiseThe Houston Chronicle, Bernardo Fallas: "Ching combined with
midfielder Richard Mulrooney for the only scoring of the night in the 33rd minute. Mulrooney rushed
to collect a loose ball off a corner kick and, upon coming across it, unloaded a razing,
left-footed shot from near the top of the box that an alert Ching deflected past United keeper Troy
Perkins.
That I didn't discover on my own....

You know - skin of the teeth and all that razzmatazz? United looked distinctly out of sorts in the
first half as the forwards could not maintain possession and Carroll was not able to get wide and
dangerous in the same manner than Olsen does (maybe he needs to grow a beard - wait, can he grow a
beard? maybe he'll knit one out of an argyle sweater).
D.C. United 4 : 2 New England Revolution
Six Word Novel Recap
Four goals equals four point lead.
Media, Traditional and OtherwiseThe Washington Times, John Haydon: "Moreno scored his first goal in
the run of play in nearly a year, and Emilio scored two more to bring his league-leading total to
18 as United defeated the New England Revolution 4-2 in a game littered with questionable calls.
