Italian patrons

Soccer Pie 08 October @ 07:44 AM EST

The position of a patron, that is to say owner of the club gives you limitless possibilities. Besides the reputation, it gives you a chance to assure everyone of your football knowledge, to sack managers, give players a hard time; simply put, you have a toy that you can even break and act as if nothing happened.

The Renaissance of Roberto Baronio

The Offside: Italy 17 September @ 05:07 PM EST

Let's start by saying that Roberto Baronio isn't exactly a household name in Italian calcio. The casual fan may not even know who Roberto Baronio is or what position he plays (Baronio is a classic regista that plays in front of the defense and dictates the play. His passing skills are excellent, especially his long passing, and he is good at set pieces).

Click to continue reading...

Last Minute Mercato Madness

The Offside: Italy 31 August @ 04:51 PM EST

The Weekend Round-up will be up tomorrow since today was the last day of the summer transfer market and teams made last minute deals. Many clubs were scrambling until the very last minute to get contracts deposited into the league offices and some transfers had to be canceled because they weren't completed in time.

Pisa Come Crashing Down Again

Twohundredpercent 25 July @ 04:16 AM EST

Britain isn't the only country in which football clubs are prone to occasional financial collapse. Paul Grech, from the Italian football blog Il Re Calcio, writes on the rise, fall, rise and fall again of the Italian club Pisa AC.

For a city that has been made famous by its gravity defying leaning tower, there's a bit of irony in Pisa AC's penchant for tragic and spectacular crashes.

Strascichi pesanti.
Brescia Draws Livorno 2-2 in Promotion Playoff

Letters From Vagabondia 15 June @ 07:52 PM EST
American midfielder Danny Szetela did not play in Brescia's 2-2 draw with Livorno yesterday, the first leg in a home-and-away series to determine who will play in Serie A next year.
Given that the away goals rule does not apply and the higher seeded team (Livorno) advances if the goal aggregate is tied, Brescia faces a must-win situation on the road next week at Livorno. Click to continue reading...

Serie B Promotion Final Decided

The Offside: Italy 11 June @ 05:27 PM EST

Going into the Promotion semi-final second leg, all 4 teams had a chance to advance. Empoli and Brescia played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg and had all to play for in the second. Grosseto upset Livorno 2-0 away, and they liked their chances of finishing the job at home but you couldn't count out a Livorno team with so many experienced players.

Brescia, via Sonetti. Al timone dei lombardi arriva Cavasin

CitySport...un Mondo nuovo... 20 May @ 05:28 AM EST
Guess who’s birthday is today- Roberto Baggio!

The Offside: Italy 18 February @ 04:00 PM EST

So when I was a little kid watching calcio back in the '90's, my idol was none other than Roberto Baggio. Everything about him amazed me: his technique and skill, his perfect free kicks, the way he just slipped past defenders like they were practice cones, the amazing goals he scored, everything.

Bernardo Stays At Napoli But European Interest Remains

Letters From Vagabondia 07 February @ 03:32 PM EST
It looks like American forward Vincenzo Bernardo will be staying with SSC Napoli this spring after turning down several offers from throughout Europe. Bernardo had drawn interest from Spain, England, Romania, Belgium, Greece, and among several Italian Serie B and C teams. The strongest offer came from Serie B side Brescia which offered to buy joint ownership (50-50) of the New Jersey player - an offer Napoli refused. Click to continue reading...

WADA, in its neverending quest to make sports less fun and the lives of athletes more miserable, has struck a new low today after their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on the cases of Napoli midfielder Daniele Mannini and Brescia's Davide Possanzini. Beckham: Just Let Him Go

Letters From Vagabondia 27 January @ 02:46 PM EST
I've been wondering when (depite the drumbeat of reports from Europe) people back home would finally realize that David Beckham really wants to stay in Milan. Now it seems they are waking up to it and none too happy.
Perhaps it was too much to load onto one man's shoulders -to popularize the game in a vast nation of 300 million people. Click to continue reading...

Szetela Watches From The Bench As Brescia Drops Another

Letters From Vagabondia 08 November @ 12:28 PM EST
Brescia continued its slide in Serie B, losing its second match in a row, this time to 15th place Piacenza, 1-0. American Danny Szetela appears to have fallen out of favor with coach Nedo Sonetti, having been bumped by 23 year-old Marco Zambelli the past two weeks. Of course the more Sonetti seems to tinker with the lineup, the more inconsistent (and less successful) the side has been. Click to continue reading...

Missing Five Starters, Brescia Tops Frosinone

Letters From Vagabondia 04 October @ 10:59 AM EST
Playing without a slightly injured Danny Szetela along with four other starters, Brescia topped a feisty Frosinone side 2-1 this afternoon in a rainy Serie B matchup. Brescia defender Marco Gorzengo seems to have recovered well from a calf injury, scoring both Brescia goals to put them at 13 points and fifth place in the league, within striking distance of a promotion spot (for now).
