A lot of column centimetres have been devoted to Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes in recent
weeks and to have kept his head while others around him have been placing it upon the financial
guillotine has been admirable – yes, that's you David Gold. Three excellent articles in The
Seventy Two have explored the appeal of the man while our own blogger Ben profiled him in these
pages as 2012 drew to its conclusion.
[I]n an article last year, The Economist coined the phrase `Londonism' to refer to what it
regarded as a distinct ideology driven by the office of Mayor. It cited as the central tenets of
`Londonism': enthusiasm for the financial services industry; an openness to immigration; and the
unceasing pursuit of economic growth.
John Mackie talks for first time since he was at centre of race storm
Former footballer who racially abused another player in 2002 relives events in light of the Luis
Suárez and John Terry cases It was about 7.30am on Wednesday and John Mackie had just finished
setting up his fruit and veg stall in Camden.

Twenty years ago in January, Wrexham AFC managed one of the great FA Cup surprises of all time.
They had finished the previous season at the bottom of the Football League and had only been spared
relegation to the Football Conference on account of the League expanding its size, while their
Third Round opponents in that competition, Arsenal, had ended the previous season as the champions
of England.
Mike Grella and Brentford escped their FA Cup game with a victory while the rest of the Americans
did not find the field for their respective teams this weekend.

Mike Grella hasn't been lighting up the scoreboards ever since making the move to Europe in
2009, but that wasn't the case on Tuesday.
Grella enjoyed a career day by scoring four goals in Brentford's 6-0 win over rival Bournemouth
in the quarterfinals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Where's your Caravan?By Chris HargreavesPublished by The Friday Project, August 2011£8.99ISBN:
9780007364145What next for a lower league footballer upon retirement? A simple enough premise, but
too few biographies have tackled the theme with any distinction, so Chris Hargreaves' recent
release, which engages throughout with the realities and emotions of signing off from one's playing
days, is a
Since taking over at Mitra Kukar coach Simon McMenemy has been hunting for a reliable goal getter.
He has Saktiawan Sinaga and Jajang Maulyana up front already but now has secured the signing of
Marcus Bent and if you think I'm gonna list all his clubs you got another thing coming!
Among the clubs Bent has played for are Brentford, Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers.
October was a tough month for Boro. It started with 3 straight defeats to the likes of
Scunthorpe, AFC Wimbledon and Huddersfield. It soon picked up though and the win against Charlton
kicked off another unbeaten run.
Stevenage 1-0 Charlton
A Stacy Long goal was enough for Boro to beat unbeaten, table-toppers Charlton Athletic.
League 1's top-eight looks, as things stand, much like the masses predicted back in August, with
the monied Charlton, Huddersfield, Franchise, Preston and Sheffields United and Wednesday all
present and correct. Yet, defying convention and sticking it to Big Boyz are two of the division's
less chic teams, Notts County and Brentford.
Scunthorpe United have extended the loan stay of Ireland U21 international Shane Duffy.
The Derry born centre-half has impressed during his month at Glanford Park and the Iron were keen
to extend the deal.
Saturday's 2-1 victory over Yeovil Town was the 19-year-old's fourth appearance for United and
Scunthorpe boss alan Knill has persuaded Premier League side Everton to allow him to remain on a
month by month basis.
Like we saw with Danny Rose yesterday, there are several young players in the Tottenham ranks
who are facing the decision as to whether another loan spell is needed or whether the time has come
to make them regular members of the first team squad.
John Bostock is similar in that sense but the problem seems to be that loan spells and John
don't go that well together.
Liverpool Reserves made a thrilling start to life under new boss Rodolfo Borrell as they were held
to a 4-4 draw with Brentford on Tuesday afternoon.
The Reds got off to a flyer and it all looked to be going to plan when Suso netted a spot-kick
inside the opening 10 minutes.
However, the Bees responded and were level less than a minute later courtesy of a long range strike
from Emmanuel Oyekele.
Goals galore at the Academy

We ought to give a pat on the back to Frankie Simek, who starred in Carlisle United's Johnstone's
Paint Trophy win against Brentford on Sunday and became the first American Wembley cup final winner
since Jemal Johnson in 2008, or the first at the new Wembley with an American accent let's
say.Frank has always been an impressive performer in my eyes, and could easily have worked at a
higher level.
Frank Simek and Carlisle United welcome in Brentford while Mike Grella and Swindon Town host League
One leaders Brighton in a limited slate of weekend English action.
Ireland U-21 international Conor Clifford is keen to extend his loan spell at Notts County
from champions Chelsea until the end of the season.
The 19-year-old Dubliner moved to Meadow Lane on a one-month loan in early February but is eager to
remain.
Magpies boss Paul Ince has been impressed with the former Crumlin United players performances and
will discuss keeping him for the rest of the campaign with the club's chief executive.
Seagulls are the Bee's Knees Brentford 0-1 Brighton (08:03:11) We sent roving reporter Nick Goodwin
to Brentford to watch the mighty Albion.... Since EFW's last League 1 outing in February, Brighton
and Hove Tika Taka FC have notched up five league wins, scoring four goals in four of those games
to boot.
Eddie Johnson started and played 90 minutes in Preston North End's 1-0 loss at
Hull City on Saturday.
Keanu Marsh-Brown started, played 75 minutes, and scored a goal in MK Dons' 1-1
draw with Brentford on Saturday. (Many thanks to Bilet for posting his goal, seen below) He started
and played 90 minutes in MK Dons' 3-2 loss to Leyton Orient today.
Andy Scott's departure from Brentford may have come as something of a surprise to many, but one of
his former signings appears to be reaping the benefits. Brought in from Dagenham along with fellow
Daggers Ben Strevens and Danny Foster ahead of the 2009-10 season, winger Sam Saunders arrived with
his eyes on the prize, but the intervening eighteen months have seen the Bexleyheathian struggle to
Recently on this site, somebody begged the question ‘Where is John Bostock?' It seemed a good
question at the time and one which deserved an answer.
Bostock arrived at Spurs amidst much publicity from Crystal Palace in March 2008. His arrival
was met with disgust at Selhurst Park, where Simon Jordan launched into a full blown hissy fit at
the fee decided by tribunal.
If the Premier League is now, for many, something approaching the ultimate footballing
experience, there is probably something to be said for the argument that, in its quest for purity,
quality, our game has lost something. The idiosyncracies of football at or near the top have been
whitewashed out of sight over time, to be replaced by a scrubbed up and sanitised version of what
we might call The British Football Experience.
Well, it's been a long time since our last European adventure. The time has come to do it again.
Yes, that's right - the Big Viper and the great You Suck Corrales will, once again, be taking the
show on the road. This time, we'll be coming to you from England and Italy. There are lots of games
on the schedule and several sights to see.
Our latest guest post comes from John McGee, gaffer of Carlisle United website, Bring Me the Head
