Although there were four big play-off games in Europe for us all to watch along with numerous friendlies, possibly the biggest game of the day was held in Cairo between Egypt and Algeria.

A rivalry that goes back to 1989, the intensity leading up to the game today reached fever pitch only a few days ago when the Algerian team bus was attacked by fans with rocks.

A seat at the A-League 02 October @ 09:54 PM EST
Ray Gatt and his team at the Weekend Australian have done some great work and uncovered that FFA registered Sydney Rovers FC name, colours and trademark some weeks before saying that this Sydney bid had the 12th license. Ooops. Of course the other bidders are cheesed off. The Sydney Rovers bid seems to have been given the inside track and has a real paradise club feel. Click to continue reading...

Amanda Palmer's 'Leeds United'

From a Left Wing 30 September @ 06:47 PM EST
Amanda Palmer is one half of The Dresden Dolls. "Leeds United" is off her solo album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer?. The track isn't directly about Leeds but the pounding on the keys, the blaring horns, the voice hoarse from shouting/screaming/singing taps into the riot of football crowds. She explains that the whole idea of turning out to support your team & getting into brawls with each other struck her as "Roman" and a good subject for her. Click to continue reading...

Qualify or Crucify

Football Is Coming Home 18 September @ 05:35 AM EST

Croatia have qualified for three successive World Cups since Independence, reaching the Semi Final in 1998. It's a remarkable record for a nation of 4 Million. It could be about to end.
Croatia may have been resurgent under Slaven Bilić, qualifying emphatically for the EURO 2008 tournament, pimping McClaren's England along the way, but 2007-8 was a long time ago.

You Got Mud On Your Face...

The Fullback Files 10 July @ 09:07 AM EST
Big Disgrace. How's that for a two word summary of Mexico's farcical 1-1 draw with Panama in the Gold Cup that rambled on past midnight (for me at least) owing to brawls, cards, injuries (feigned and otherwise), an incompetent ref, and fan... Click to continue reading...

Football Fans Gone Wild

The Offside 12 June @ 02:30 PM EST
[Sports Rubbish] Two videos have come to light in the last two days that display, unfortunately, just how stupid, for lack of a better term, football fans can be. The first comes from Mexico, where a fan was caught on video camera laying out another fan with a right hand. Problem is the fan throwing the [. Click to continue reading...

Pitch Riots & Bolivian Beatdowns

The Offside 10 November @ 07:00 PM EST
Traveling to the sort of "fringe countries" in terms of South American football (read: those not named Argentina or Brazil) almost always proves to be an exercise in believing the unbelievable. Today's example: Bolivia. A top flight game between Wilstermann and Aurora turned out to be a top flight cage match between Aurora and riot [. Click to continue reading...

Sanford's Soccer Net 06 August @ 06:21 AM EST
Dell 'Apa: All-out brawls marked the postgame events of the semifinals. But the final became as much a bonding experience for the players as an occasion for the New England Revolution to gain vengeance on the Houston Dynamo.
New England triumphed 6-5 in a penalty shootout after double overtime had seen both teams tied at 2-2. Click to continue reading...

Dell'Apa: Brawls mar conclusion of SuperLiga semifinals

Sanford's Soccer Net 01 August @ 07:55 AM EST
So much for the SuperLiga as a bridge-building event. Someone should have built a wall to separate the Mexican and MLS teams after the semifinal games, both of which degenerated into full-scale brawls involving coaches and players. Click to continue reading...
