Nilmar from Inter against Corinthians in the first round of Brasileirao. Hey, Dunga. It's
already time to call him, hun?
Ronaldo scored his first goal in the Campeonato Brasileiro in 15 years. And it wasn't only one.
It was a hat-trick. Since 1994 the forward did not score in the main national competition. The
match against Fluminense was for the 9th round of Campeonato Brasileiro. Corinthians scored 3 goals
in 9 minutes in the first-half.
It seems everyone is paying tribute to the late Michael Jackson (sounds funny, this, hun?).
Watch the goals from Barueri 4 - 2 Atletico-MG, and find what Diego Tardelli, the striker from
Atletico, did. To make things easier, jump to 3:28.
Yes, Diego. Who's Bad?
It was the same stadium Ronaldo broke the fence that separates the pitch from the fans by
scoring his first goal in this return to Brazilian football. This time he did not shine. And with
20 minutes into the derby against Palmeiras, he broke his hand. (this post will be updated as we
get more info)
The victim was Santos' midfielder Roberto Brum. The player was going to be replaced and took
forever to left the pitch, which result in a yellow card. it was his third yellow card and he got
suspended for the next match. Luxemburgo reacted to that. Overreacted.
Already mentioned in the previous post, but it deserves one of its own. Pedrao from Barueri, a
ghost goal.
So far, the return of Fred, ex-Lyon, to Brazilian football has been a big flop. Despite the few
goals here and there, his club, Fluminense, has been having a horrible year. Not able to qualify
for the finals of Rio de Janeiro state championship, the club now seats in the relegation zone of
Campeonato Brasileiro.
It seems everyone is paying tribute to the late Michael Jackson (sounds funny, this, hun?).
Brazilian players decided to honor the king of pop with embarrassing goal celebrations. The worst?
The celebrations brought no luck.
Diego Tardelli, the striker from Atletico, tied the match against Barueri.
After the 10th round of Campeonato Brasileiro, Atletico-MG returned to the top after the 3-0
victory in the Belo Horizonte derby. Besides the pathetic red card by Cruzeiro's Ze Carlos, the men
of the match were veteran Junior and forward Eder Luis - even though in his goal goalie Andrey gave
a big help.
Week 22 of the Campeonato Brasileiro featured a Paulista rivalry with 1st place on the line. The
game featured Palmeiras' coach Muricy Ramalho facing his old team and CSKA Moscow & new Palmeiras
loanee forward Wagner Love in the stands. Palmeiras traveled to the Morumbi to face São Paulo FC
and played to a 0-0 draw.
The 5th round of Campeonato Brasileiro confirmed a few things either Brazilians already know or
are getting used to.
1) Bad boys will always be bad boys:
Goalie Fabio Costa from Santos and forward Kleber from Cruzeiro did it again. In the Santo Andre
3- 3 Santos draw, Fabio Costa caused an injury in Gustavo Nery which will leave him out of action
for 3 months at least.
A beautiful touch, a free-kick and a penalty. The emperor's hat-trick
Round 9 of the Serie A of the 2009 Campeonato Brasileiro witnessed the return of Internacional to
the top of the standings. O Colorado Gaucho shut out Náutico 2-0 on the road in Recife. Nilmar
returned to action after his time with Brazil in World Cup qualifiers & Confederations Cup to score
twice in the 2nd half.
11th round of Campeonato Brasileiro. The goals and one thing about each match.
Coritiba 2 x 1 Grêmio: Marcelinho Paraiba, with a beautiful long range, and forward Ariel
saving Coritiba again.
Goiás 0 x 2 Avai: Avai left the last position in the table.
Santos 3 x 3 Grêmio Barueri: Another terrible result for Santos, but given that Santos was
losing 3-1, the draw was good.
Week 10 of the Campeonato Brasileiro is official and the big match of the round featured the Minas
Gerais derby between rivals Cruzeiro & Atlético Mineiro. Cruzeiro rested its key players ahead of
its 2nd leg Copa Libertadores final and Mineiro took advantage by destroying their rivals 3-0.
Éder Luís scored his 6th goal of the season as Galo moved to the top of the table.
With two of the most famous forwards in the world playing in Brazil, the answer to the question
"guess who scored 4 times this weekend?" falls easily in one of the two names. But not on this
weekend. Val Baiano, forward of surprising Barueri, is the man. He scored 4 times against Nautico,
and has 8 goals in the league, which makes him one of the top scorers.
The man never stops even when we seem tired of talking about him.
This Sunday, he had his footprint taken to be kept at the Mineirao stadium. Before the match,
Cruzeiro, this Sunday's rival, honored the player they projected to the world. And when the action
took place, Ronaldo gave an assist, missed a penalty in lazy fashion and scored a goal.
On the 14th round, Palmeiras reached the top of Campeonato Brasileiro (losing on the goal
difference for Atletico-MG) by thrashing its main rival Corinthians with a 3-0. Those who expected
to see Ronaldo saw Obina. Obina, yes the one who Flamengo fans used to celebrate as "better than
Eto'o", pulled off a hat-trick.
Inter introduced two new players to fight for the Brazilian title. Defender Fabiano Eller, who
lifted the 06 Copa Libertadores with the side from Porto Alegre, returned after spells at Atletico
Madrid and Santos. He was forced to leave Santos after picking a fight with goalie Fabio Costa, the
"owner" of the team.
Some of you may remember the scandal of result fixture in the 2005 Campeonato Brasileiro. At the
time, referees Edílson Pereira de Carvalho and Paulo José Danelon were caught being bribed by
"investors" to fix results that would benefit their bets in international websites. When caught,
Carvalho was even jailed and confessed his participation.
Corinthians debuted its third jersey in the match against Barueri. Take a look:
Inter took on Atletico-MG last night, a match from the 11th round that had been postponed. After
a good first-half of the visitors, a trio took Inter to the victory. Edu, ex-Betis, D'Alessandro
and Kleber, ex-Brazil International. Edu scored twice. D'Alessandro scored and handed assists. And
Kleber handed even more assists.
In the 23rd round of the Brasileirao, the race for the title came down to what is promising to
be a tight one. Palmeiras (44 points), Inter (43) and Sao Paulo (40) won their matches and offered
no chance for each other to relax.
On the match that marked the return of Vagner Love, Palmeiras received Barueri at
home.
Coritiba's Ariel. Hey Maradona, he is from Argentina. Just saying...
Even though the nation was transfixed on Brazil's big win versus Argentina, the Campeonato
Brasileiro still pressed on. 1st place Palmeiras extended its unbeaten streak to 3 games with a 2-1
win at home against Gremio Barueri. Vagner Love returned to his original club on loan from CSKA
Moscow and scored the game winning goal from a PK in the 73rd minute.
Week 24 is finally in the books after the all the matches were finally ended after Wednesday. São
Paulo moved to within 1 point of the top of the table with their 2-0 home win against Avaí. The
Tricolor Paulista have lost once in their last 13 matches not giving more than 2 goals in any
match.
Match of the 24th round of Brasileirao. Goals by Jailton (Coritiba) and Dentinho
(Corinthians)
The heavy rain in Porto Alegre turned the match Inter Flamengo into a swimming contest.
Until the 32nd started, things looked dull for Palmeiras. There was enormous pressure and the
fear that the team had just lost the Brasileiro. But after the last mid-week round of Brasileirao,
things changed again. Palmeiras won and all direct rivals, but one, lost precious points. With
that, the hopes of Palmeiras fans have been renewed.
The best Campeonato Brasileiro of history, and one of the best in the world, came to an end
today. After 38 rounds, 4 clubs were fighting for the title: Flamengo, Inter, Palmeiras and Sao
Paulo. Many were the possibilities. And three of them won.
Flamengo, with goals by David and Ronaldo Angelim, became the champion for the 6th time.
Ronaldo? Fred? Adriano? No.
Kleber Pereira, Keirrisson? No.
Marcos, Fabio Costa, Felipe? No.
The main character of Campeonato Brasileiro's 6th round was the post. It prevented many balls
from reaching the back of the net, and had a huge influence in the final scores in 5 out of the 10
matches of the weekend.
Rodada 7 of the 2009 Campeonato Brasileiro was an exciting week as goals flowed like Grey Goose at
a South Beach nightclub. Every game except one had at least 3 goals scored as Brazil's reputation
of high scoring matches was in full effect this weekend.
Atlético Mineiro continued its unbeaten start to the 2009 Brasileirão with a 3-2 road win versus
Santos.
For many years now, the level of refereeing has been terrible in Brazil. Last weekend was
another one to not be forgotten.
1) Look at the second goal of Santo Andre. Marcel is clearly offside. The linesman has been
suspended:
2) Obina was called offside in the most beautiful goal of his career.
The eyes of Brazil were transfixed on South Africa as the Seleção battled the United States in
the final of the Confederations Cup. The Campeonato Brasileiro continued on toward crowning a
champion as Round 8 of the Brasileirão is officially in the books.
Newly promoted Gremio Barueri ended Atlético Mineiro's unbeaten season with an emphatic 4-2 win at
home.
The 9th round of Campeonato Brasileiro was all about surviving a bad hang over. And most did
it.
After being eliminated at home from the semis of Copa Libertadores, Gremio honored its nickname
of "immortal". With 11 minutes, the two forwards from Argentina had scored 3 goals - Maxi Lopes (2)
and Herrera (1).
Four regional derbies took place for the 12th round of Campeonato Brasileiro.
In the derby of desperation, Sao Paulo and Santos battled to see who had the less horrifying
side. And Sao Paulo won 2-1, with two goals by striker Washington.
In the Curitiba derby, Atletico-PR and Coritiba also fought to see who has the worst team.
The 13th round of Campeonato Brasileiro was all about black and white. Atletico-MG and
Corinthians were the ones who benefited the most from the midweek round. The two clubs won at home
by 2-1 and watched direct rivals losing important points.
In Belo Horizonte, Atletico beat Fluminense, who had the 5th debut of coach Renato Gaucho.
In the 15th round, Palmeiras finally reached the top of Campeonato Brasileiro. In the debut of
coach Muricy Ramalho, the new leader beat Fluminense 1-0. Diego Souza, one of the best in the
league, scored the only goal. Fluminense, on the other hand, seats on the 19th spot. The club has
not had a victory in 10 matches, which means that Renato Gaucho has not won yet in his return.
The action in the third division of Campeonato Brasileiro is in full power the four clubs
promoted to the second division are about to be known. And some are very traditional.
The results of the knock-out stages on the weekend were:
Brasil de Pelotas 0×0 América-MG
Guaratinguetá 2×0 Caxias
ASA 1×1 Rio Branco-AC
Paysandu 1×1 Icasa
The winners will advance.
Santa Cruz, the traditional side of Pernambuco where Rivaldo started his career, is wounded to
death. The club faced relegation three times in a row, from first division in 2006 to fourth and
last division of Brazilian football in 2009. This Sunday, the suffering was extended even more. The
club played at home against CSA to not be eliminated in the first round of the tournament.
