The major non-event of last weekend was the cancellation of the Classico between Marseille and
Paris SG. The supporters made up for it by rioting in downtown Marseille antagonizing locals and
behaving like the idiots they are. Many arrests, mostly local fans when it seemed like the
Parisians started it all.

French Ligue 1 have become one of the strongest leagues in Europe during the last few years and
it is constantly justifying its reputation. Round 10 this season was supposed to bring us the
biggest derby of French football but the OM-PSG derby was postponed because two
PSG players had contracted the swine flu.

It was quite the week for French teams in European football where Lyon showed incredible poise and
Hugo Lloris certainly scored some points as the # 1 goalkeeper for France for the World Cup...it
was also somewhat poetic justice to see a team Houllier successfully coached for 2 years beat
Benitez's Liverpool at Anfield.

As we've been reporting recently on Jeu Du Jour, each of the main contenders for the Ligue 1 title
this season have been losing their unbeaten records one by one. Going into last weekend's games,
only two were left and one of those, unsurprisingly, was the seemingly unbeatable Bordeaux.
Unbeatable, that is, until Saturday when Saint Etienne, of all teams, handed out a 3-1 beating at
the Stade Geoffrey-Guichard knocking the French champions off the top spot.

Vive la Foot!
A belated Vive le Foot this week since I found myself flying to the land of Ligue 1
overnight...sadly enough I will not be able to attend the PSG -Nancy tie in Paris...but my SF
correspondent will be at the Emirates scouting some Frenchies vs. Blackburn...
Boulogne lost the match of the promoted last weekend and will face a Lille side that destroyed
Slavia Prague 5 - 1 in the last 15 minutes of their Europa League tie.

Note the day in your diary: Sunday 30th August 2009 – the day Bordeaux's record breaking run of
consecutive wins finally came to an end. Not that it saw a change in leader at the top of the Ligue
1 table – Les Girondins' 0-0 draw at Marseille means they remain the team to beat in France.
Bordeaux's run of fourteen back-to-back league wins that started in mid-March 2009 finally ended
following a goalless draw at the Stade Velodrome.

It was a great experience to go to another MLS stadium last weekend, not least because we were
hosted by the Fire Supporters Club who looked after us grandly. I wanted to share a few
observations picked up over the weekend because I think they are of interest to all soccer fans.
Maybe we could even learn some things from them.

Looks like the locker-room issue in Chicago surrounding defender Bakary Soumare and manager
Denis Hamlett is resolved today. Reports from France say the Fire have sold the All-Star defender
to French club Boulogne for a little over $2 million.
For a club struggling for consistent play at home, losing their best defender in this manner is
going to be a bigger blow than some people will be willing to admit.
