Poka, Pav
It has been one hell of a busy fortnight in the world of Tottenham Hotspur – and not a whisper of
any of it from The Boys From White Hart Lane. For shame.
So, in a desperate attempt to catch up - and stay relevant – TBFWHL is taking a look back at 14
days in which Spurs stumbled into the fifth round of the FA Cup, re-entered the title race after a
brief remission and brought in a couple of battle-hardened veterans at the expense of a cult hero.
After training with Premier League Arsenal during the MLS off-season, Henry signed a two-month loan
deal with the North London club and made his debut against Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium in
the FA Cup third round. He showed why he is considered an all-time great with a trademark finish
just minutes after his introduction.
It was billed one the homecoming for Thierry Henry and in the end, the ending matched the
expectation at the start. A single goal separated Arsenal from Leeds United and advances us to the
next stage of the competition. A home tie against Aston Villa is the prize that we got and it was a
moment of history being reenacted that sent us through.
If I had to sum up the first half in one word, it would be boring. If I had to sum up the second
half in one hyphenated word it would be squeaky-bum. We looked flat in the first half an the
attackers really weren't in the game, the second half, we nicked a cheeky goal from nowhere, looked
like we would go on and get a few more, but instead spent the last 20 minutes with our backs to the
wall.
Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle United: Skipper Returns To Help Sink Magpies
Steven Gerrard's return from injury continued as he came off the bench to help inspire Liverpool
to victory over Newcastle United. The talismanic skipper produced a wonderful half-hour cameo as
his goal combined with a brace from ex-Magpie Craig Bellamy moved Liverpool into fifth place.
Crushing events as Fulham were 9 seconds away from advancing to the Europa League group stages
when Djiby Fall stepped up to score with the last kick of the game. The goal tied the game and
allowed Wisla Krakow to advance at the expense of Fulham.
It was a cruel blow for a Fulham side that started preseason training in June, so that they
could enter this tournament in the very first round.
Appreciation
The legends descended on the hallowed turf of the Grove. This is probably the first time that
I've ever used hallowed turf and new-ish stadium in the same sentence. For me (and I'm sure many
others too), Highbury remained the truly real Arsenal stadium. However, with each match/season and
the growing memories, not forgetting the continual Arsenalisation of the stadium, Emirates Stadium
is turning into home.
Now that was the performance we wanted after a nervy week at Chelsea. We all knew that the next 9
days could define our season even at this early stage but we desperately needed a win. Newcastle
away, especially this season is always a difficult game as I said in
my match preview.
We got the win and I have to say, playing better than we have in recent weeks.
THFC1882 presents Mike Hooley with a match report from a less than glorious
night for Tottenham Hotspur:
Any hopes or expectations of progression to the knockout stages of the Europa League were all
but extinguished last night, with Spurs never recovering from perhaps their sloppiest start to a
game since the 4-0 reverse at Fulham in the FA Cup back in January.
It will go down in the records book as a comfortable 4-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano at the Camp
Nou tonight. But this game was much more than that. After the weekend's shocking 1-0 defeat to
Getafe, Barcelona found itself in the unusual position of looking up at Real Madrid. Before
tonight's kick-off Barca was six points behind Madrid and Pep Guardiola's team knew that they could
not allow that gap to grow any wider if they were to have any hope of retaining their La Liga
crown.
Well that was better wasn't it. The game was over at half time and it was much more like the
Chelsea performance we should be seeing week in, week out. Whether or not other sides would be as
generous as Wolves were is another thing, but for once Chelsea took full advantage.
AVB had said prior to the game that there would be no dramatic changes to the side from Leverkusen
and he made just two changes.
With seven wins from eight games and twenty-two points from a possible twenty-four, the sun is
rising over the white and navy blue corner of North London at the moment. This evening's match
against Aston Villa was one at which Tottenham Hotspur might, in other years, have chosen to fluff
their lines, and Spurs supporters are rather over-familiar with their club's predilection for
getting to the point of achievement before contriving to find a way to allow it to slip through
their hands.
Terrence Boyd Scored the Tying Goal for the U-23s This MorningThis morning the U-23 U.S. Men's National Team headed 30 km due east from Duisburg to Bochum to
face VfL Bochum in a scrimmage today. The Bochum team was a combination of first team players and
youth players. It's an international break in Germany so no sign of the People's Rooney, but
nonetheless it was a spirited match played in front of an appreciative crowd of about 200 people.

So the progress and the momentum continued yesterday with a win so routine it made you sit up
and realise how long it's been since we won a game quite so easily. Having beaten us here last
season West Brom clearly decided that was enough and really didn't offer much at all.
Sexy Sexy Football from Spurs. In the first half at least Spurs were sexy, QPR were crap. Second
half was more hit and miss, hanging on stuff mixed with the sexy football. But at the end of the
day. QPR we're woeful enough and we were sexy enough for us to get the win. We're now unbeaten in
17 home premier league London derbies.
Fulham playing Wigan means one thing: Clint Dempsey will score a goal. Those of us bold enough
to put money where our mouth is were able to turn £3 into £13.38. Thanks, Clint; thanks
Wigan!
Perhaps the result was a bit hard on Wigan, who had most of the ball and spent much of their
time in Fulham's half, but when you've lost six on the spin you need a spot of luck, and that was
missing today.

I can't say a great deal about last night as I haven't seen anything bar the goals but when you
look at the team we had out, and the strength of the Bolton side, that was a very decent win. All
the goals came in the second half, Frimpong was well and truly robbed by former Arsenal man Fabrice
Muamba who went on to open the scoring, but two goals in a couple of minutes ended up sealing the
game for Arsenal.
Tonight's Champions League game went as expected. Chelsea were much too good for Genk and easily
won 5-0.
What impressed me tonight was the swagger and style that Chelsea played with. Fernando Torres
looked like the player that Chelsea paid £50million for. His movement and passing was terrific and
for once he looked like he was on the same wavelength as his colleagues.
Hole in the net There has been a few ghost goals in recent seasons and they usually occur from low
shots driven into the bottom corner, not looping headers. But Spanish outfit Alondras managed that
at the weekend. Fran Fandino headed the ball into the goal of opponents Pontevedra, but the ball
bounced underneath the [.
Arsenal suffered its fourth loss of the season at Tottenham while Frank Lampard's hat trick
helped Chelsea rout Bolton on Sunday.
Rafael van der Vaart and Kyle Walker secured Tottenham's 2-1 derby victory over Arsenal, which
is just two points above the relegation zone after seven matches.
... which is always nice Arsenal secured a 2-1 win over Olympiakos in last night's Champions League
match, with Champions League debutant Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opening the scoring. He cut in from
his right-wing berth before arrowing a shot into the bottom corner. The 18-year-old seemed to think
his performance compared well to all his previous [.
An injury time own goal by Richard Dunne cancelled out a second half penalty by Barry Bannan to
end yet another game in stalemate, but a win would have been thoroughly undeserved.
The first half is not worth talking about. It was as bad as anything I've seen from Villa in
recent years and, let's face it, we've seen some poor stuff lately.
Valencia vs Barcelona – 9.21.11
"Beautifully released by Lionel Messi. Mathieu is all over Lionel but he can still measure it to
split millimeter perfection on the run under pressure – means nothing to him. Still another red
carpet pass."
"Pep Guardiola keeping the ex-Valencia man, David Villa, sat on the bench twitching like a
greyhound to get out of the traps.
Dare I suggest that we can concentrate on the league now? No? Didn't think so. Nevertheless, we
are out of the Carling Cup thanks to a 2-0 loss at home to Bolton in what, by all
accounts, was an utterly dismal performance.
Chris Eagles picked up on a Marc Albrighton mistake to score a screamer from 20 yards.
After a difficult non-conference schedule saw 2010 finalist Louisville surrender the No. 1, the
No. 4 Cardinals are back and making mincemeat out of inferior competition with a 4-0 thrashing of
Butler.
Mark Knight was the first of four separate Cardinals to score on the night with a header in the
18th minute.
My last game in London was today's match-up at Craven Cottage between Fulham and Man City. My
wife and daughter had never been to a Premier League match, so I thought that the small ground and
full capacity would provide an atmosphere that they would enjoy.
They witnessed a great Fulham comeback, four goals and both sets of fans doing the Poznan!

When Arsene Wenger spoke about the need to add consistency to our game, like most of you I
thought about a sequence of results and performances which would win points for the football club.
I'm pretty sure that he did too, looking to add to the midweek draw and the win against Swansea
last weekend.

Positive results earned by two London clubs in the Champions League as Chelsea opened their
journey with a win against Bayer Leverkusen while Arsenal earned an important draw as the Gunners
travel's to Borussia Dortmund's home ground.
Fernando Torres still scoreless for the Blues but the Spaniard set up his team's two goals,
while Arsene Wenger's team had their first half lead from Robin Van Persie's strike just few
minutes before the final whistle.
Malaga picked up their first points of the season with a 4-0 thumping of newly-promoted Granada
at the Estadio La Rosaleda.
New signings Santi Cazorla and Joaquin Sanchez shared the goals between them as the big-spending
club began to see some returns on their heavy summer outlay.
The result gets Malaga's season up and running following last weekend's disappointing 2-1 defeat
at Sevilla and lifts them to eighth place in the league.
Arteta – Bright Start but faded.....
Its September 10th, a New dawn, new beginnings, from the ashes of Project Y'sssh and the
dishevelled remains of a team that faced the Old Trafford onslaught, it was Wengers regrouped
band of footballers with a significant number of new recruits, grabbed on the supermarket trolley
dash on 31st August, who took to the field, ready to drag Arsenal back to the upper echelons of the
premier league.
Roberto Martinez picked a ball up from by his feet, rolled it across a tray of thick brown paint
and tossed it across the field to Victor Moses. Moses stopped its flight with his chest and let it
fall to his feet. He moved forwards with the ball, lifted his head and sent the ball arcing across
the field at knee height.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution once again failed to hold onto a lead, this time
with a two-goal advantage, as they settled for a 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls at Gillette
Stadium this evening. The Revs had spots of brilliant play and Milton Caraglio put on a striking
clinic in the first half, scoring twice, but defensive lapses once again doomed them in a match
that also saw two red cards and several questionable officiating decisions.
Two preventable set-piece goals meant Liverpool left Sincil Bank with nothing after a highly
entertaining game in front of the ESPN cameras on Saturday.
Despite first-half goals from Katie Brusell and Nicky Twohig, Robbie Johnson's side were unable to
build on last week's first WSL victory as they were twice denied by the woodwork in a 4-2 defeat to
Lincoln.
Our pre-season campaign was rounded off by a 2-1 win over an impressive Athletic Club Bilbao
side, who gave us an ideal test before our opening Premier League game against Everton next week.
There was an extremely impressive and vocal crowd at the Lane for our only home game of the
pre-season.
For the third consecutive game it took a strong second half performance for United to beat an
MLS team. And once again it was Wayne Rooney who inspired the second-half performance, just as he
did in Seattle last weekend.
Fergie gave debuts to summer signings David de Gea and Phil Jones making their debuts, United
conceded a shock goal after only 12 minutes when Jalil Anibaba launched a deep free-kick into the
penalty area.
A good workout for the men in white. Crusaders were competent, but not so competent that the
result was ever really in doubt.
Fulham took a while to get going, Matthew Briggs' goal giving us a valuable breakthrough. The
ball was cleared to the edge of the area, Briggs got there first and took a swing, the ball flew
into the top corner as if it had just left the boot of Roberto Carlos.
Charlie Adam made his bow as a second-half substitute as Liverpool got their pre-season tour of
Asia off to a winning start courtesy of a 4-3 success over Guangdong Sunray Cave on Wednesday
afternoon.
The former Blackpool midfielder showed some neat touches throughout a promising cameo as goals from
Christian Poulsen, David Ngog, debutant Conor Coady and Andy Carroll gave Kenny Dalglish's side
victory in front of a passionate crowd in Guangzhou.
Ukraine 1, France 4
Ukraine opened the scoring in the 53rd minute courtesy of an epic howler from France's backup
goalkeeper Steve Mandanda. France replied with a very well taken equalizer from Gameiro, and then
ran over Ukraine in the last 10 minutes or so after some of France's best players came on as
substitutes.
