Fred on target for Fluminense against Palmeiras

With just four games remaining in the championship, holders São Paulo went top for the first time this season following their 1-1 draw away to Grêmio on Wednesday and Palmeiras' 1-0 defeat at Fluminense on Sunday.

Almost 67,000 turned up at the Maracanã hoping for a miracle as strugglers Fluminense took on Palmeiras.

Sudamericana: Only One Brazilian Remains

Copa Sudamericana reached the semifinals, two Brazilian clubs had the chance to be in the final 4. However, only Fluminense did so. Flu visited Universidad de Chile and one more time relied on Fred. The ex-Lyon seems to be playing for all the matches he did nothing since the beginning of the year.

A measly six days ago, Bobo Vieri a man without a club since he terminated his deal with Atalanta because fans "expected too much from him" announced his retirement by unequivocally stating:

"I don't want to play anymore and I'm not even tempted to play abroad."

And now, just SIX DAYS LATER he's about to sign with Brazilian minnows Botafogo.

Sudamericana: Bad Start for Brazil in the Quarter-finals

The two Brazilian clubs still in the Copa Sudamericana did not start well the quarter-finals of Copa Sudamericana. Botafogo and Fluminense will have a lot of work if they plan to advance to the semis. Botafogo visited Cerro Porteno in Paraguay and lost 2-1. Reinaldo scored for Bota, but if the club from Rio wants to advance, it must win at Maracana.

A Petkovic brace sinks the leaders

Two goals from Flamengo's Petkovic ended Palmeiras' unbeaten run in the Palestra Itália and cut their lead at the top of the table to just four points.

The Greens dominated for most of the first-half but an excellent dribble and finish by the veteran Petkovic put Fla ahead.

Only 2 Brazilians Remain in the Sulamericana

The irony? Those two clubs are in the relegation zone of Campeonato Brasileiro. This shows how much Brazilian clubs care about this competition and how low its level is. Botafogo and Fluminense are the ones trying not only to save the season, but also to save Brazil's reputation in the tournament.

In the opening leg of the round of 16, Brazilian clubs showed how much this tournament is of interest. Out of the 5 clubs, just one, Botafogo, won. Playing as visitors, Vitoria and Goias had defeats which are not likely to be reversed in Brazil. Fluminense visited the second the last side of the Peruvian league, and just tied (well, just look where Flu is in the Brasileirao too.

On Saturday, just two points separated the top three sides in the Brasileiro. But even though Palmeiras were not in action, they stayed top after Internacional lost away at Vitória and São Paulo were held away at strugglers Santo André. Now just three points separate the top five.

After the 0-0 in the first-leg, Botafogo received Atletico-PR at home. After 10 matches, Bota won for the first time. Uesley scored forst for Atletico-PR, and in the final moments of first-half, Lucio Flavio tied from the spot. In the second-half, Gabriel scored the second for the home team.

It is the first time the Fla-Flu takes place at the international stage, but the disregard which is given to this tournament by Brazilian clubs will force two reserves sides into the pitch tonight.

Corinthians rotund front man, Ronaldo, may have broken a bone in his hand after an awkward fall in Sunday's loss to archrivals Palmeiras.
