New England Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph has broken his silence regarding the reasons
behind his recent leave of absence from the team. A statement posted on his official website read
in part:
I am writing to thank you for your overwhelming support and warm wishes, and to address my recent
leave of absence from my team and community.
Perhaps the biggest business news from the soccer weekend was the announcement that storied
Scottish club Glasgow Rangers is withdrawing from its 2010 American tour. The tour was intended
to include matches against Celtic in Boston and DC United at RFK. The BBC article references the
recent Boston Globe article that criticized Rangers' fans and ultimately forced the Globe to
withdraw the article and issue an apology.
First of all, I am getting to this dreadfully late. I've been just hammered at work and with travel
and thus have been terribly behind on writing here on the site. I am reminded by the saying my old
Ohio State journalism professor Rose Hume used to bat dated story ideas down.

By force of an interesting coincidence, two MLS players of note unfortunately connected because
they are each out of action due to brain-related injuries have updates posted to major newspaper
websites. Though concussions are rarer in soccer than in American football, the cases of these two
players and their ability to bring attention to the seriousness of the issue is an important part
of the continuing growth in awareness of brain injuries in sports.

US Soccer will name for USA great Claudio Reyna as their Youth Technical Director tomorrow. I don't
really know what that means, but they have a conference call scheduled to tell us all about it.
The reason behind New England Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph's abrupt request for a leave of
absence has apparently been uncovered. The Boston Globe, citing unnamed team sources, reported late
Tuesday night that the Revs captain is enrolled in the MLS substance abuse and behavioral health
program.
Miffed over an article published in the Boston Globe last month that seemingly blamed their club's
supporters for inciting many of the violent incidents between their side and fans of Old Firm
rivals Celtic, Rangers FC has reportedly decided to pull out of a scheduled summer tour of the
United States.
The MLS league office announced this afternoon that it has fined coach Hans Backe $2,500 for
comments made to the Boston Globe following Saturday's 3-2 loss in New England. The remarks in
question can be found in this article by Revs beat reporter Frank Dell'Apa. Asked about the
controversial red card issued to Roy Miller, Backe responded:
I would say it's an absolute disgrace.
New England Revolution chief operating officer Brian Bilello announced yesterday the team will
be looking to add at least one designated player (DP) prior to the start of the 2011 season. With
the Revs already eliminated from postseason contention, the team is hoping to prevent another
season of disappointment next year.
The American sporting public, still high on a sucessful World Cup, has turned it's attention
towards its biggest star and his plans for the future. Landon Donovan, now the most famous American

New England Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph, one of the top players in Major League Soccer,
has entered the league's substance abuse and behavioral health program, the Boston Globe reported
late on Monday.
The Revs announced on Monday that Joseph was on indefinite leave from the team, but it was
unclear why.

I was fortunate enough to be part of two interviews with one of my role models and best local

Boston's Fenway Park may yet play host an international friendly later this summer, according to
Red Sox President and CEO Larry Lucchino. In an interview over the weekend, Lucchino revealed that
he is actively trying to find a replacement opponent to play against Scottish club Celtic in
July.
"It's not definitely out, but it's not definitely set either," said Lucchino of the possibility of
a match coming off.
Last week the League issued a $2,500 fine to New York coach Hans Backe after his public
criticism of Roy Miller's ejection during the Red Bulls' loss to New England surfaced in the Boston
Globe. This is obviously not the first time the league has handed down punishments, yet many know
little about the Law and Order arm of Major League Soccer: the Disciplinary Committee.
The beautiful game is finally making its presence felt in the United States. With the World Cup
taking center stage this side of the pond, organizers want to cash in on the rapidly increasing
popularity of the sport this summer. The state of Massachusetts has played its part by arranging
a friendly game between Scottish giants Celtic and Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon.
