Sorry for the continual backtracking with news and events a couple weeks old, but coming into
possession of this blog deep into the off-season, I wanted to touch on some topics of the past.
Bare with me, I will get to more current affairs, like the US dos zero victory over Mexico this
week [...]

It's a good time to be Charlie Davies.
After a breakthrough performance at the FIFA Confederations Cup and scoring a goal in the
CONCACAF Gold Cup against Grenada, the 23-year-old forward will get to play in front of family and
friends from the Boston area for the first time in a U.
Looks like Soccer365 has the latest scoop on Davies....
Hammarby speedster Charlie Davies could be setting up shop in France by this time next week if
ongoing deep negotiations pan out, Soccer365 has learned.According to his agent, the transfer race
for the U.S. forward has come down to two competitors, with a Ligue 1 club holding the inside
track.
L'Équipe is reporting that American international Charlie Davies is headed
to FC Sochaux. The Hammarby striker has played in both the Confederations Cup and the Gold Cup this
summer, with his participation in the latter hinting that his time in the Allsvenskan was done.
Davies, who left Boston College for Sweden following his junior year, drew some interest from clubs
around Europe after he scored 14 goals in 27 league appearances last season.
Ok, so the United States gave Brazil all it could handle in the 2009 Confederations Cup final,
falling to the 5-time World Cup champions, 3-2.
But what does it really mean?
According to the Boston Globe's Mark Stokes, this final could be the match that pushes soccer into
the forefront of American sports.
The ACC season kicked off for a number of teams over the weekend, as college soccer action
continued across the country. The University of Maryland got its league schedule started right with
a 2-0 victory over Boston College in College Park. The Terrapins face Duquense on Tuesday.
Elsewhere in the ACC, Duke beat Virginia 1-0 in double overtime, while midfielder Michael Farfan
scored the game winner as UNC beat NC State 2-1.
There's plenty of entertaining college soccer action to catch up on this week, with upsets
cropping up once again and Akron breaking their own attendance records last night.
Starting out in Ohio, where No. 1 Akron faced their biggest test of the year against No. 15 Ohio
State. A record-setting crowd of 2,473 were on hand to watch the Zips record a comprehensive 3-0
win against the Buckeyes Wednesday night.

It's been a tournament ripe with upsets to this point, and with half the higher seeds still in
the mix, there were plenty more for the taking in the third round. This time around, the majority
of high seeds were able to hold serve, with the biggest upset coming from the University of
Maryland, 2-0 winners against No.
US National team phenoms Jozy Altidore and Charlie Davies have both made moves to benefit their
playing careers - Altidore to Olympiakos (Greece) and Davies to Sochaux (France).
Altidore, the 19-year-old striker who scored in the USA's 2-0 upset over Spain at the
Confederations Cup, is reportedly headed to Greek champion Olympiakos from Villarreal (Spain).
Sochaux snatched a 1-0 victory over AS Monaco as former Boston College forward Charlie Davies
continues to impress for his new club. Winning a penalty and generally terrorizing the Monaco
defense, Davies endeared himself to the home crowd with his all-action performance.

The important ACC match between UNC and Maryland came down to the wire on Friday. No. 2 UNC saw
their unbeaten start to the season come to an end with less than two minutes left. Fifth-year
senior Kevin Tangney, who had made two comebacks from knee surgery, grabbed the game's lone goal
just when overtime seemed imminent.
18 wins from 18 games, and the Akron Zips are the top-ranked team no matter where you look in
the collegiate ranks. NSCAA and Soccer America both have the Zips on top, and the latest RPI
released this week concurs. Having answered every question asked of them during the regular season,
Akron now has a chance to run the table all the way to a NCAA championship.
By now any fan of the US Men's National Team already knows that the boys followed up their miracle
escape from the group stage by snapping Spain's record unbeaten streak and going up 2-0 on Brazil
before coming back to earth. Rather then opine on how historic these results might be, I'd like to
present some things we may have learned about this team.

There's a big college soccer matchup tonight in College Park, Md. No. 2 North Carolina visits
No. 4 Maryland with huge ACC implications on the line. UNC is undefeated coming in, off to a a
4-0-1 start, trailing only Akron for the No. 1 spot in the NSCAA rankings.
Here's a short video tribute to Charlie Davies who was seriously injured in a car crash this
last week. Charlie is a player who seemed to be really coming on and finding himself in the game.

Wake Forest was considered a heavy favorite to reach the ACC men's tournament final, but nobody
told Virginia, which knocked off another higher seed to reach the ACC Final.
The Cavaliers converted all five penalty kicks to defeat Wake Forest, 5-4, in penalty kicks in
their ACC Tournament semifinal in Cary, North Carolina.
The second round of the NCAA tournament was played this weekend, with maybe 3 upsets in between,
but 1 HUGE upset. Here are the results:
- Stanford 2, BYU0
- Oklahoma St 1 (5), Santa Clara 1 (6)
- UCF 0, Wisconsin 1
- Connecticut 0, Boston College 2
- Portland 2, Washington 1
- Dayton 1, Virginia Tech 3

UCF v Wisconsin: UCF was seeded 3rd and was definitely a team that could make
it to the quarter finals for sure, but they ended up losing in just the second round of the NCAA
tournament.
Looks like the RPI called it right by labeling the Big East as a weak conference. Of the three
schools involved in the first round out of the conference, two fell in the first round of the NCAA
Tournament Thursday.
UConn traveled to Monmouth in a match-up of two top 25 teams who failed to earn a seeding in the
tournament.
Drake Bulldogs, Luke Gorczyca
NEWTON, MASS. Senior Luke Gorczyca (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) picked an opportune

College on Sunday (Nov.
I know, I missed the women's final last week. I throw myself at the mercy of the court.
Anyway, today starts the Akron vs. ACC Final Four, with UNC, Virginia, and Wake Forest forming the
opposition to the only undefeated (and untied) team left in the country.
Akron vs. North Carolina will be a very interesting game.

Yesterday I was a guest on Marcelo Balboa's radio show From The Pitch, in Denver. Co-host Brian
Forbes manned the show on his own this week, and he and I talked about many soccer related
subjects.

I'm looking forward to being able to see some college teams from outside our area this year now
that I've finally broken down and signed with Mediacom for cable TV. Fox Soccer Channel continues
their Friday Night College Soccer season, already underway, with some quality games. Check out
tomorrow nights game!

Upsets are always a huge part of sport, and when it comes to the collegiate game, the national
rankings create an obvious atmosphere for upset. While in the men's game, hardly a weekend goes by
without upset -- particularly in the ACC, as the powerhouses beat up on each other -- it's always
worth noting when the mighty fall.

With the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida pouring heavy rains in Cary, North Carolina, the stage
was set for upsets in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday. Three lower seeds knocked off
higher seeds to set up a pair of semifinals few would have predicted.

NCAA tournament spots are up for grabs as conference tournaments wind up, ending this weekend on
Sunday. For some programs around the nation, a miracle run in their respective tournament is the
only hope to extend the post-season any further.
One of the last big tournaments got underway in the Big Ten.
Virginia kept playing until Wake Forest imploded in the penalty kick shootout
NC State scored in the seventh minute and held on against Boston College

All season long, the ACC has been the talk of men's college soccer -- seen by many as the best
conference in the nation. And while the nine schools spent the regular season beating up on each
other, the NCAA Tournament was the chance for the conference to prove how good it really is.
