Only weeks ago, it appeared that area fans of women's soccer would be without a team to cheer
for in 2012.
Now, they'll have a choice between two.
On Tuesday, Aztec MA (formerly Boston Aztec) announced that it will join the newly-formed WPSL
Elite League. Although the team is the latest team to join the Elite League, it is, by no means, a
stranger to WPSL.
On Thurday, the Boston Aztec took one more step toward a return to the WPSL title game with a
4-0 win over the similarly-monikered Boston Aztec U-23 squad in the WPSL regional playoffs. The win
delivers the Aztec to the WPSL semifinals for the second year in a row, as the 2010 WPSL champions
will face off against the Orange County Waves in Chicago on Saturday, July 30th.
The Western Mass Pioneers and MPS Portland Phoenix kicked of
the weekend that was in New England soccer with a 0-0 draw on Friday at Lusitano Field in Ludlow,
MA. Goalkeepers Matt Williams (MPS) and Colin O'Donnell (WMP) stopped a combined 19 shots to keep
the board unblemished.
Twenty ten was an eventful year for a number of New England-based teams.
Perhaps the most notable moment within the confines of the region was Boston Aztec's capture
of the WPSL national championship back on August 1st. The Aztec (12-1-1, 37 pts.), who also serve
as the feeder team for the Boston Breakers, claimed the title with a 2-1 win over Ajax America down
in the oppressive, unforgiving Dallas heat thanks to goals from Becky Ryan and Becca Mays.
