Manchester United and Manchester City figure to contend for the Premier League crown this
season, but they'll fight for the FA Community Shield on Sunday in a high-profile season
tune-up.
A number of Americans are also slated to be in action Sunday as well. Although he's not
guaranteed to start after coming off a hamstring injury, Jozy Altidore's AZ Alkmaar gets its season
underway against PSV Eindhoven; Carlos Bocanegra and St.
With all of the midweek action going on, especially in domestic cup competitions, it seems like
this is a good week to bring back the scoreboard/schedule feature. The highlights of the week all
seem to take place on Wednesday when Real Madrid and Barcelona play in the finals of the Copa del
Rey, Benfica and Porto face off in the semifinals of the Taça da Portugal and Real Salt Lake and
Monterrey begin their two-leg CONCACAF Champions League final.
It's as if European soccer never left.
A full slate of games from overseas are on tap for this weekend as the Premier League joins the
Bundesliga and Ligue 1 as major leagues to start the 2011-2012 campaign. Defending Premier League
champion Manchester United opens up against West Brom on Sunday, but a game most Americans will
want to keep an eye on is the Fulham-Aston Villa tilt on Saturday.
It's the best day of the year (at least for some soccer fans).
Today marks the start of the English Premier League season, the first real sign that European
soccer is back in full swing, and American soccer fans will have plenty of juicy match-ups to make
this special day enjoyable.

It's time to bring you another listing of weekend soccer action on American television. As I've
said before, I started compiling this list just so I could figure out what I want to watch each
weekend. Now, that I'm living in Argentina, this list is pretty irrelevant to me, but we will
continue to bring it to you on a timely basis.

How super fantastic and delicious is this week's action? Well, there's no Manchester derby or
Superclasico, unless you count what's going on in Greece and I don't know how to say Superclasico
in Greek. This weekend is so good that Chelsea is hosting Liverpool on Sunday and I'm not even
going to bother to put that match in my list of Top Five Matches of the Weekend.
Despite the number of big matches that took place this weekend, there wasn't a lot of movement in
the rankings this week. Only one club, Werder Bremen, fell out of the rankings and it was replaced
by Borussia Monchengladbach, the club that beat it 5-0.
In the Top Ten, the big loser was Udinese, who was passed by two clubs in Italy's Serie A even
though neither of those two clubs, Milan and Lazio, managed to pick up a victory.

With nearly full slates of action in the Premier League, Serie A and Ligue 1 and domestic cup
play on the docket as well, plenty is on the line across Europe today.
A number of Americans are in action across the continent, as Clint Dempsey looks to keep his
goal-scoring form going at Craven Cottage against Manchester United, while goalkeepers Tim Howard
and Brad Guzan aim for clean sheets against Swansea City and Arsenal, respectively.
