But who are the top 10 world players who we'll be talking about by next summer's tournament?
According to John Molinaro of CBC Sports in Canada, these are the guys you should be paying attention to .

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England), Tim Howard (Everton, England).

Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes, France), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover, Germany), Jay DeMerit (Watford, England), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan, Italy), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United, England).

Goalkeepers Tim Howard and Brad Friedel led the way in Americans Abroad as both earned clean sheets for their respective clubs. Here's the full recap of Americans playing overseas in the top European soccer leagues.

Tim Howard (GK) - Everton - English Premier League - Howard had another solid game in goal as Everton defeated Sunderland 2-0 and the entire club has been in great form as of late.

It was the final weekend in many of the European leagues as goalkeeper Tim Howard grabbed another clean sheet for Everton, and midfielder Maurice Edu played for Rangers who won the Scottish Premier League title. In the League 1 Promotion Play-off final Zak Whitbread and Millwall fell to Scunthorpe, but Michael Bradley and Monchengladbach were able to avoid relegation.

In what has to be one of the more toothless punishments handed down in the history of international soccer, FIFA has suspended US international midfielder Michael Bradley for four games in response to improper conduct toward official Jorge Larrionda after being sent off late in the Americans' shock 2-0 victory over Spain in last month's Confederations Cup semifinal.

The 2008/09 season is finished for the top European soccer leagues and attendance numbers remain strong for most leagues. The German Bundesliga remains the top division averaging over 40,000 for the season. The English Premier League is second with around 35,000 followed by La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, and the Scottish Premier League.

It was a busy weekend of soccer in Europ for Americans playing abroad. Oguchi Onyewu scored 2 goals, Tim Howard had a few saves in penalty kicks, and Maurice Edu scored for Rangers. Here are video highlights from this weekend's games.

Many of the European leagues began this weekend including the French Ligue 1 and the German Bundesliga. In France, Charlie Davies had his debut for Sochaux while Carlos Bocanegra has become a regular for Rennes. In Germany, Michael Bradley played for Monchengladbach while Steve Cherundolo started for Hannover 96.

It was a busy weekend for Americans Abroad with Oguchi Onyewu and Carlos Bocanegra scoring goals for their respective clubs. Tim Howard earned another clean sheet while Clint Dempsey and Fulham defeated Brad Friedel and Aston Villa. Bayern Munich had a strong 5-1 win at Borussia Dortmund as they look to win the Bundesliga title this season.

It was a busy and eventful weekend in European Soccer for Americans playing abroad. Here's a recap of Americans playing in the top European leagues.

Oguchi Onyewu - Standard Liege beat Royal Excelsior Mouscron 3-0 - Belgium Jupiler Pro League - 2 goals - 90 minutes - Standard won easily and are now tied atop the league table as Onyewu scored two goals.

It was a low key weekend for Americans Abroad this weekend as there were goals scored in the top leagues. Clint Dempsey started for Fulham as they earned a victory and moved into 7th place in the Premier League. Brad Friedel was able to earn a draw as Villa are in position for European soccer next season.

Michael Bradley and Borussia Monchengladbach saw their hopes of remaining in the German Bundesliga slip even further from their grasp as they fell 2-1 to Bavarian giants Bayern Munich over the weekend.

Most of the top European leagues are more than a 1/3 into their 2009-10 season. In Spain, Barcelona is on top of the league table while Real Madrid are close behind. In France and Germany, the league tables are very close and no clear favorites so far. Inter Milan leads the Italian Serie A and are the favorites to repeat as champions.

Continuing his strong return to the Borussia Monchengladbach first team, Michael Bradley helped lead his side to an exciting 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Hamburger SV.

This week's Bundesbag was all set to go when we heard of the sudden death of the German international Goalkeeper Robert Enke. The Hannover 96 goalkeeper took over as Germany's Number 1 after Jens Lehmann retired last year.
The circumstances surrounding his death are not confirmed at the time of writing but it is quite clear that they are of the most tragic kind.
