The first Champions League matchday didn't offer a great deal of excitement. There were a decentish amount of goals 44 strikes in 16 games for an average of 2.75 per game but a good many of those came from the beatings handed down by Barcelona and Arsenal.

Schalke go 0 out of 4 to slip from crisis to meltdown. Wolfsburg and Stuttgart grab their first wins. Other top clubs keep stuttering. The little ones keep rocking the table.
Schalke 1-3 Dortmund. Schalke had lost their previous matches as well, but at least there was something of an upward spiral, with hints of better attacking football or a slightly more stable defense.

One of the beautiful things about the Europa League is the vastness of the fixture list; seemingly hundreds of games representing every little province in Europe.

Less beautiful is the fact that it's like heading into the world's biggest candy shop with a sweet tooth and being told "pick one or two".
