This weekend was a memorable one for Americans Abroad as two recent MLS transfers made their
European club debuts, while a few other Americans found the net.
Maurice Edu (pictured) made his debut for Glasgow Rangers on Saturday in a 2-1 win over
Kilmarnock while U.S. Olympic teammate Jozy Altidore impressed in his La Liga debut for
Villarreal.
Fresh home from international duty this week, Maurice Edu was not expected to play for Rangers this
week against Kilmarnock. A late failed fitness test by Kevin Thopmson pressed Edu into duty as a
starter in his debut for his new club before 50,000 home fans. Fellow American DaMarcus Beasley,
also fresh back from Chicago, was also on the field as the Ibrox club found themselves down 1-0 in
the early going.
It remained a busy weekend for American players in Europe today as Carlos Bocanegra put in a good
90s minutes for Stade Rennais as they drew Nancy 0-0. Rennes is off to a slow start, currently
sitting in 12th place with seven points.
Down in Spain, Jozy Altidore dressed but did not play for Villarreal in their 2-1 win over
Numancia.
The week before the transfer window closes is always a busy one. This year it slammed shut on the
evening of September 1. Clubs had to buy players before then or they are doomed to wait until
January before they can add to their rosters. It can be frantic.
That wasn't the case for South Korean players until last week – it had been quiet, too quiet.
Borussia Dortmund's Bosnian-American Neven Subotic was named to La Gazzetta Dello Sport's
European Best 11 today after another strong performance this weekend. For the second time in three
weeks, he combined stout defending with offensive contributions, scoring the game winnner for the
second in the young season, this time against Energie Cottbus.
It took a while, but Freddy Adu finally made his first start for AS Monaco. The U.S. Olympic
midfielder made the starting XI in Monaco's French Cup match against Paris St. Germain. It could be
Adu's last start for a while after a goal from one-time Chicago Fire target Fabrice Pancrate gave
PSG the win, thus ending Adu's potential source for major playing time.
Schalke, currently sitting at the top of the Bundesliga, have surged ahead to the peak of another,
less prestigious table - the goalkeeper injury table. First choice keeper Manuel Neuer has yet to
make an appearance this season, having broken his fifth metatarsal during a pre-season friendly
against SpVgg Erkenschwick (currently playing in the [.

1. Assholes Anonymous Hi my name is Rafinha and I am an asshole. For a team that has some very
likeable and fair-minded players in Neuer, Kuranyi and Westermann, there seems to be a need to
offset it with a player like Rafinha. The sooner the fat Rafa from Liverpool buys little Rafa and
takes his [.

Football is not always a beautiful game; sometimes bookings are necessary. Thankfully, we're on
hand to keep all these bookings straight. There are 34 distinct offences that the DFB considers
bookable. In their honor I've written this paean to the punished: We are here not to castigate but
to celebrate these masters of [.

Here's this week's Bundesliga XI. It is packed with Bayer 04, Hoffenheim and Werder players. It
does include a special shoutout to the man who ended Energie's goal drought, an under appreciated
defender from Arminia and a goalkeeper who lost. 1. Schalke 04 Now 10 of their last 13 have been
scored by defenders.

Heavily favored Bundesliga teams suffered a weekend of setbacks and embarrassments with Bayern,
Dortmund and Hanover all being outplayed by teams most German soccer fans would expect to end up
sacrificing three points.
In their match on Sunday, Borussia Dortmund topped the embarrassment of Bayern's 5-2 fall to Bremen
with a 4-1 loss to promoted Hoffenheim.
