This weekend was a memorable one for Americans Abroad as two recent MLS transfers made their
European club debuts, while a few other Americans found the net.
Maurice Edu (pictured) made his debut for Glasgow Rangers on Saturday in a 2-1 win over
Kilmarnock while U.S. Olympic teammate Jozy Altidore impressed in his La Liga debut for
Villarreal.
Yet another barrier is broken by an American soccer player in Europe. This time, its not signing
for a big club or playing in a Champions League final (which has yet to happen) but rather making
news for being seen around town with a beautiful girlfriend. That's right folks, in the tradition
of Lothar Mattheus, Francesco Totti, Gigi Buffon, and others, new Borussia Dortmund signing Neven
Subotic is getting ink on the society pages in Germany with his girlfriend Lisa Ryzih.
Looks like Sunil Gulati saw that FOX story today too, because he immediately reached out to
Subotic's representation for confirmation. You'll remember from my earlier post, that Subotic
said that wearing another crest besides the USA would be "kinda like backstabbing."
According to Ives, when reached for comment, Sunil said: "We have spoken to Neven's
representative and [.
Various UK news sources, including Sky Sports and the Globe and Mail are
reporting that the final details are being worked out in a deal to bring American Maurice
Edu from Toronto to Glasgow Rangers. After returning from Olympic duty in China, Edu was
supposed to be in Glasgow yesterday for Rangers' home opener against Hearts to iron out a deal
worth a reported $5 million.
After last night's excellent showing by Oguchi Onyewu in Standard's 1-0 Champion's League loss to
Liverpool, his stock is peaking at just three days before the transfer deadline. Another American
defender in Europe is also on the rise as young Neven Subotic continues to show he is a force to be
reckoned with in the Bundesliga.
So if you've been paying attention this past week, it turns out Germany is unable to pursue Subotic
for their national team. The World Cup Blog breaks it down like this: "According to German
site Sueddeutsche (one of the country's largest newspapers), the German Football Association has
given up on Subotic since it's become clear that [.
Serbian national team coach Radomir Antic has claimed victory in the chase to land Neven
Subotic, stating that the defender has chosen to play for Serbia rather than the United
States.
There has still been no public declaration from Subotic on the matter but Antic's public
announcement sounds more legitimate than the previous reports that surfaced last month saying
Subotic would play for Serbia.
Fox Sports is citing a Serbian news source indicating that Borussia Dortmund's Neven Subotic has
decided to play for Serbia, not the USA. I'm skeptical of this report for a few reasons; first, if
Subotic was going to make such an announcement, his club would be among the first to release the
news (and BVB insiders tell us that Subotic has said nothing about any such decision).
Borussia Dortmund's 19 year-old Yugoslavian-born American defender Neven Subotic has been ruled
ineligible to play for Germany by FIFA. German coach Joachim Loew took interest in Subotic after
his explosion onto the Bundesliga scene this fall in a series of outstanding performances for BVB.
So, instead of trying to grab another player through naturalization, Germany will need to look
elsewhere for a new central defender.
Borussia Dortmund's new head coach Juergen Klopp made a good impression with the BVB fans last
night as his new-look team beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the preseason T-Home Super Cup. Included in
the starting 11 was young American defender Neven Subotic whom Klopp brought with him from FSV
Mainz.
Subotic looked nervous during the early going but started to show his stuff in the 26th minute with
a terrific 45-meter pass to Delron Buckley to set up a dangerous chance for BVB.

Fresh home from international duty this week, Maurice Edu was not expected to play for Rangers this
week against Kilmarnock. A late failed fitness test by Kevin Thopmson pressed Edu into duty as a
starter in his debut for his new club before 50,000 home fans. Fellow American DaMarcus Beasley,
also fresh back from Chicago, was also on the field as the Ibrox club found themselves down 1-0 in
the early going.
It remained a busy weekend for American players in Europe today as Carlos Bocanegra put in a good
90s minutes for Stade Rennais as they drew Nancy 0-0. Rennes is off to a slow start, currently
sitting in 12th place with seven points.
Down in Spain, Jozy Altidore dressed but did not play for Villarreal in their 2-1 win over
Numancia.
It took 12 weeks but Borussia Moenchengladbach finally recorded its first road win of the season by
downing Arminia Bielefeld 2-0. Michael Bradley went the full 90 and contributed offensively and
defensively to the effort - a positive sign after only five previous appearances, mostly as a
substitute.
The week before the transfer window closes is always a busy one. This year it slammed shut on the
evening of September 1. Clubs had to buy players before then or they are doomed to wait until
January before they can add to their rosters. It can be frantic.
That wasn't the case for South Korean players until last week – it had been quiet, too quiet.
In the light of ever more Hoffenheim table topping, coverage and hype, I thought it might be
interesting to take a look at how much of their success is Dietmar Hopp's money and how much of it
is Ralf Rangnick's genius. While at it, I decided to do the same for the remaining 17 Bundesliga

FOX Sports is channeling a Serbian news report that Neven Subotic has accepted the callup for the
Serbian National Team. Looks like Subotic has turned his back on the USA and
Bosnia-Herzegovina, his other two choices. If you want to check out something cool, head over and
listen to this interview podcast with Subotic from November [.
Borussia Dortmund's Bosnian-American Neven Subotic was named to La Gazzetta Dello Sport's
European Best 11 today after another strong performance this weekend. For the second time in three
weeks, he combined stout defending with offensive contributions, scoring the game winnner for the
second in the young season, this time against Energie Cottbus.
It took a while, but Freddy Adu finally made his first start for AS Monaco. The U.S. Olympic
midfielder made the starting XI in Monaco's French Cup match against Paris St. Germain. It could be
Adu's last start for a while after a goal from one-time Chicago Fire target Fabrice Pancrate gave
PSG the win, thus ending Adu's potential source for major playing time.
With 15 points from 21 Premier League matches, Fulham are one from bottom and two points off the
safety zone. This is not the first time that the Londoners have been battling for survival in
top-flight English football and they have to pull out a giant miracle to stave off relegation.
According to The Sun, [.

Schalke, currently sitting at the top of the Bundesliga, have surged ahead to the peak of another,
less prestigious table - the goalkeeper injury table. First choice keeper Manuel Neuer has yet to
make an appearance this season, having broken his fifth metatarsal during a pre-season friendly
against SpVgg Erkenschwick (currently playing in the [.

It looks like standout defender Neven Subotic is one step closer to being a US player after FIFA
ruled against Germany's bid to make him one of theirs. FIFA cited a rule that states a player
can't switch to a country of which he wasn't a citizen before he took part in his first FIFA [...]

Borussia Dortmund fans got their first good look at new defender Neven Subotic in Sunday's
Hallelujah Cup, a charity tournament to raise funds to fight child poverty. The tournament
consisting of the main Ruhr valley teams, namely Borussia Dortmund, MSV Duisburg, Rot-Weiss Essen
and SG Wattenscheid 09 played in a round robin format of 50 minute matches (25 minutes per half).

Cavalieri (Palmeiras), Vincent Lucas Weijl (AZ Alkmaar), Emmanuel Mendy (Murcia Deportivo). Notable

Predictably brilliant to watch that is. Seems like every weekend Werder Bremen serve up a
multi-goal caserole for all to enjoy in the Bundelsiga, while Liverpool put together a last minute
comeback cake in the Premier League. Slightly odd cooking metaphors aside, they both did it again
today: Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund duked out a 3-3 [.
Local paper Il Mattino is reporting that SSC Napoli is close to acquiring Neven Subotic from
Borussia Dortmund. The 20 year-old defender seems to be part of Napoli's plans to strengthen the
squad after securing a Champions League berth during the home stretch of the season. He is expected
at Castel Volturno in June where your loyal vagabond will be sure to have a word with him.

When Columbus Crew changed their kit to one that looked a lot like Borussia Dortmund, we had no
idea they'd actually pursue a player from Dortmund.
Quickly after being spurned by Celtic's Maciej Żurawski multiple reports are reporting that
Columbus set their eyes on a new target for their DP slot: Lars Ricken, a 31 year old, injury
prone, midfielder who is a former German international.
1. Hamburg are missing out. Just look at that photo. Though, Croatia didn't really impress in their
friendly against Scotland (1-1) and neither Dortmund's Mladen Petric nor Bremen's Ivan Klasnic
could put their names on the score sheet. I'm still a bit sad, that Bilic won't be coaching a
Bundesliga side next season.

I have just returned from my summer holidays, where I had a lovely respite from footie.
However, here we are with the season two weeks deep and I am behind. But I am afforded the
luxury of making my tactical analysis on two games rather than one, which can be useful. I decided
to spend the [...]
One day after that of the Champions League, the draw for the First Round of the UEFA Cup 2008-09

Sierra Leone striker Sahr Senesie is currently on trial with the New York Red Bulls. The 23 year
old striker began his career in the Borussia Dortmund youth ranks and has appeared in 24 Bundesliga
matches with Dortmund. He was most recently on trial with English side Nottingham Forrest, prior to
that he had a brief spell with Swiss club Grasshoppers.
Michael Bradley made his Bundesliga debut, Sal Zizzo saw his first action of the season for
Hannover and Neven Subotic and Borussia Dortmund were destroyed by TSG Hoffenheim.
