The fourth round of group stage matches took place this week and a number of teams booked their
places in the knockout stages. Although after this round of games there are no perfect sides left
in the competition.
Bordeaux dominated Bayern Munich for a second time in a fortnight. They beat the Germans 2-0
with goals from Gourcuff and Chamakh which puts them in the knockout stages.

Ligue 1 teams had an amazing week in the Champions League (not so much in the Europa) that somewhat
validated my prediction of French teams being real contenders this year. While Bordeaux won with
class and Lyon once again upset Liverpool in the same manner they did 2 weeks ago, Marseille
destroyed Zurich and are now in a position to make Real and Milan sweat.

Friday has arrived, only one day to get through until we play again.
I am just glad November 5th is now over for another year – I don't like Fireworks!!
Sadly though, nowadays November 5th seems to go on for about a week, so I anticipate more
tonight and over the weekend
Few odd bits of gossip around late yesterday evening and early today.

3 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat for Bundesliga clubs in Europe this week. The good news is that
five out of six have it all in their own hands to progress to the next round. The odd club out is
of course Hertha B... no wait.
Bayern Munich 0-2 Bordeaux. Bayern wanted a football teacher and got a textbook
case of how little possession stats tell you about the outcome of a football match.

Champions League View: Bayern Munich and Liverpool FC could get 10 points and still not
qualify.
An entertaining set of Champions League games threw up some unexpected results, great games and
the odd ninja (but not a very effective one). Almost all of the big names have a chance to reach
the knockout stages, even though the likes of Bayern and Liverpool have made it very, very
difficult for themselves.

Liverpool had to defeat Olympique Lyon away after losing 1-2 at home in the previous round. But
last night the English team only managed a 1-1 draw, and with 4 points it is now almost impossible
that Liverpool progresses to the next round: Livepool must win their remaining two matches and
Fiorentina must not win any of their remaining two matches (of which the last one is between
Liverpool and

Bordeaux earned a 2-0 result at the Allianz Arena to cruise past Bayern Munich and ensure a place
in the next round of the Champions League. The visitors' prowess at set-plays was evident
throughout the game, as every time a decision went the French way, minor problems in the Bavarian
box were never far away.

What a great show the tifosi put on last night! Perhaps they couldn't
all contain their whistles when Ricky got hold of the ball, but they certainly
showed their cuori che sono grandi (big hearts) nevertheless. On the pitch, it's safe to
say that Los Blancos played strikingly better than the first leg, even without the sadly
missed Greaseano.

Group A leaders, Bordeaux will look to edge even closer to a place in the next round. To do so
they will have to beat Munich at their home ground.
Bordeaux were clearly the better side a fortnight ago as they frustrated Munich players into

All of a sudden, it seems no-one wants to win Ligue 1 this season. Every time a team rises to the
top of the pile, they quickly lose their next game and fall from grace again.
Such is the case for Lyon who recently replaced long-standing leaders Bordeaux at the top end of
Ligue 1. Their trip to Nice seemed barely troublesome after beating Liverpool in the Champions
League last week, but they hadn't accounted for the home side's desperate need for points.

My first day in Buenos Aires turned out to be the day of the superclasico, even though I
scheduled it months before the schedule came out. Fate? Perhaps. Unfortunately, fate also worked to
have me arrive too late to attend the match. Fate can be fickle. Because of the fickle finger of
fate, the only picture I have is a blurry one of a television screen showing the end of the match
in a café in Buenos Aires.

Ligue 1 continues to delight and mystify in equal measures. Last weekend's matches saw Bordeaux
lose for a second successive match after such a long unbeaten run, and new leaders Lyon lost too
but remained on top of the table.
Lyon's lead is down to just a single goal, never mind points. Their main challenger in second spot
is Montpellier, a team that finds itself back in the top flight for the first time in five years
and looking determined to make it six.

spots to the next round.
