Roller derby, from the perspective of a referee who works other sports, has a really curious method of becoming a new official. First, there are try-outs; and serious ones, at that. Potential referees try out with the women who want to play (there were sixty people this year). Tryouts are four hours long and include both skills and endurance testing.
