Ajax v Feyenoord, Holland
History
It all began as a clash of cultures. Feyenoord were supported by the dock workers from the built up
part of Rotterdam, while Ajax by the richer, more sophiscated side of Amsterdam.
Magic moments
This fixture is full of goals, goals, super goals as big Frank frank would say.

An article by Simon Kuper draws attention on how the English continued to attend football
matches even as the British Expeditionary Force were evacuating Dunkirk. For many, the
preoccupation was their team's fortunes rather than the drone of Pathe newsreels of the war.
Even Sir Tom Finney recalling the war was more concerned about playing Arsenal in the 1941 War
Cup : "I wasn't all that interested in the war when I was playing.

A bad penalty call late in a match between Indian sides Vedic Village Reddy Enterprise and
Kashipur Baghajatin Sangha caused supporters of the losing team to overreact just a smidge. From
Express India:
Their supporters fired pipe guns, killing a spectator, Aminul Islam, and injuring five
others.

So, what do we know after either one or two matches per team? I have to say, not a heck of a lot.
Here's a quick recap of my observations...
1) CoverItLive is a really great tool - thank you to everyone who showed up to the blog over the
weekend and contributed their observations and questions - it was a blast and one that we'll
re-create as frequently as we can (sorry, mid-week won't work because I have a day job and Premier
League matches are generally on at 3 PM on the East Coast of the US).

A video clip of what transpired in the Milan match
If Becks wants to make friends with the Galaxy fans maybe he should make an appeal to the Home
Depot authorities to revoke the lifetime ban on the fan who entered the pitch to confront him.
Yes, it was stupid behaviour on Josh Paige but really there should be no call for such severe
punishment.

With the decision for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup being made in 2011 I guess the bombs in Jakarta
this week mean Australia has one less Asia competitor to host the 2022 World Cup.

MARKHAM - It seems sombody's been watching the Confederations Cup Tournament a little closely; and
his name is Steve Ward.
Longtime Pistola Steve Ward had a breakthrough season in the goals department last year, only
moments after buying a new set of cleats (ironically, those goals came on headers).

Deadspin had the photo and a great caption: 'Talk like an Egyptian.'
A commenter on the site also notices the bombs on the sign -- fortunately just one is lit.
Another commenter pointed out that many of the other (assumed English-speaking) commenters couldn't
even spell words right.

As previously reported, Red Bulls Fan of the Year Thomas Binkley (aka
"Binks") was banned for life from Giants Stadium by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition
Authority for allegedly throwing some "f" bombs and exhibiting "threatening"
behavior. To throw further salt in the wounds, it landed just before the Barcelona game.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: South Americans take their football pretty seriously.
Apparently none more so than fans of Brazilian Serie A side Flamengo who, during a protest against
the team's recent poor form, decided to show how frustrated they really were. You know, in these
circumstances it's customary for fans to chant abuse, or make obscene banners, but this hardcore
group of Flamengo fanatics actually threw a BOMB at the team during practice yesterday morning,
injuring two players; defender Dininho and striker Obina.
