The Missouri Class 2 District 5 Girls Soccer Bracket was completed last night. The District will have one play-in game on Friday May 15th (MSHSAA approved), 4 quarter-final games on Saturday May 16th, 2 semi-final games on Monday May 18th and the Championship game on Wednesday May 20th at 6:00 pm.

The Falcon's set a high bar in the traditional derby this evening, winning easily by comparison to the history of this series. The game-winner was scored in the 6th minute (I subscribe to the goal that establishes a lead that is not relinquished when measuring game-winners) when Brandon Baum buried his 28 yard direct kick into the upper 90 over the outstretched hands of Kickapoo keeper Tyler Moses.

As it was expected, Corinthians and Inter eliminated Vasco and Coritiba. But it was far from being easy. After last week's 1 goal draw in Rio, Corinthians played for a 0 draw at home. And this is exactly what happened. Vasco controlled the actions for most of the time. It had territory and it attacked more.

I don't know about you but I'm not quite ready for the season to start. I'll survive however and looking over the calendars that I've got, there are some nice derby's already lined up for the first week of play.

Tuesday kicks off the season (other than Waynesville's early win over Sullivan Friday) with a pair of quality challenges.

My life is almost ready for a routine again, especially with Labor Day ready to come and go. I'll get an early start by attending a pair of games this evening. And I'll finally be in one place as of this evening allowing me to get into the routine of covering soccer in Southwest Missouri.

Of course, I don't do any of this myself.

In the 23rd round of the Brasileirao, the race for the title came down to what is promising to be a tight one. Palmeiras (44 points), Inter (43) and Sao Paulo (40) won their matches and offered no chance for each other to relax.

On the match that marked the return of Vagner Love, Palmeiras received Barueri at home.

My best early season opportunity to see some regional teams opens tonight as Nixa and Ozark hold their Christian County Tournament. There are a pair of games at each school this evening, beginning at 5:00 pm.

The Carthage Tigers hope to challenge for the Class 3 District 12 title this season and are coming off of a 3-0 win over Neosho, a District and regional foe.

The COC Small School's race is neck-to-neck and may not be decided until the final week of the season when Catholic and Bolivar meet for the second time. Mark October 13th and October 26th on your calendar for a pair of bragging right's games.

The Willard Fall Classic opened last night with the host playing against Northside and District rival Hillcrest. This is a favorite tournament of mine because it's an excellent opportunity to see some excellent play and usually includes a significant Class 2 District 5 component. That allows me to see who's progressed the most during the season and is preparing for a late season run.

The final week of the regular season has arrived and there are a few teams scrambling to make up games but I think the Class 3 seeding discussions should be fairly straight forward this week.

Monday evening the Jefferson City Lady Jays visit to play against the Kickapoo Chiefs. JC, newly added to our mix by being the Central MO squad that remained in District 10 now populated by Camdenton, Rolla, Waynesville and Lebanon, can probably claim the #1 seed in the District with a win over Kickapoo.

Senior Jody McFarlen scores a pair and Jonna Welch gets one as the Liberators win their first District title. There's a good write up on the game at the Warrensburg website, also a good representation of what a good team website can be.

The 5th Annual Boys game will be played on Monday June 15th at 6:00 pm. The boys roster was announced on December 19, 2008. There were 38 players invited from 21 schools. 4 players from Class 1, 5 players from Class 2 and 29 players from Class 3. 10 of the players are All-State.

Reinstating their tyrannical grasp on the Bolivian championships following on from a three-year hiatus, Bolivar extended their tally of top-flight honours to sixteen when they overcame Real Mamore on the final day of the Apertura edition, withstanding the presence of runners-up Real Potosi by one point.
