ZURICH, Switzerland - Russia has won the FIFA vote to host the 2018 World Cup finals, beating
competition from England, Netherlands/Belgium and Spain/Portugal. FIFA president Sepp Blatter
announced the result of the 22-member panel in Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday afternoon. It will
be the first time Russia has hosted the tournament.
MOSCOW, Russia Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Thursday he was leaving for Zurich to
thank soccer governing body FIFA for awarding Russia the right to host the 2018 soccer World Cup
finals. "This decision shows that Russia is trusted," Putin told reporters before leaving for the
airport to fly to Zurich.
Once again the world's governing football body FIFA have managed to get it completely
wrong. The Ireland - France debacle was bad enough, but this time it's serious.
FIFA's decision to award the world's most coveted sporting event to Russia and
Qatar as hosts of the World Cup in 2018 and 2022 respectively is rife with
fraud.
World football's governing body FIFA said on Thursday that it feared the financial impact of the
collapse of its main product licensing agent, Singapore-based Global Brands Group (GBG).
