It was ugly, the USA losing to Costa Rica 3-1, and some say the goals against the USA could have
been much worse if Costa Rica did not let up.
Let's face it, a team without a solid defense is pretty hopeless. USA fans will want to love
their players, but some realism is needed: do we have a back 4 that is up to the task of playing
World Cup soccer?
The United States v Mexico rivalry continues on August 12th as they play in CONCACAF World Cup
Qualifying. The match is important for both teams who have not clinched a spot to next year's World
Cup yet. There are a few players from the Gold Cup including Chad Marshall and Stuart Holden. The
rest of the roster is similar to the Confederations Cup roster with names like Howard, Donovan,
Dempsey, Onyewu, and Bocanegra.

Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes had an excellent start to the season, going 17 games unbeaten to close
out 2008. The unbeaten streak has ended, but Rennes will look to back to their winning ways this
weekend, as they take on St. Etienne in the Coupe de France.
Carlos spoke to Ligue 1's official website during the week, and said that Rennes are pushing to
keep pace with leaders Lyon.
Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes got back on track with a 1-0 victory over Nice on Saturday. In claiming
a rare three points on the road, Rennes remained in sixth place ahead of next week's clash with
league leaders Lyon.
Rennes made it three wins from four, as Carlos Bocanegra returned from yellow card suspension to
score the winning goal in a 2-0 victory against Auxerre. Bocanegra was alert at the near post to
head home Mickael Pagis' cross in the 9th minute. Rennes remains in 6th place, three points out of
a Champions League spot.

Rennes and Carlos Bocanegra enjoyed a 1-0 victory over Grenoble this weekend, earning three points
that came with the added boost of a Lyon draw. The French champions couldn't get by Lorient,
drawing 1-1, and Lyon are now just two points behind the leaders. Up next for Rennes is match with
Lille a week from today.
Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes advanced to the last 16 of the Coupe de France with a 2-0 win over St.
Etienne yesterday. Two goals from Jimmy Briand were the difference for Rennes, who get back to
Ligue 1 action with a match against Toulouse next week.
Saturday
7:40 a.m. - Everton vs. West Brom, Setanta - Tim Howard and Everton clash against
bottom-of-the-table West Brom in the early match on Saturday morning. West Brom will be going for
their first win at Goodison Park in 30 years.
10 a.m. - Arsenal vs. Fulham, FSC - Clint Dempsey and Fulham travel to the Emirates Stadium where
Arsenal will be putting their unbeaten home record on the line in a London derby.
Rennes did the rest of Ligue 1 a solid by snatching a point at the death in their game against
Lyon, which finished 1-1. Carlos Bocanegra had a goal disallowed for Rennes, who needed a stoppage
time equalizer to grab the tie at the Stade Gerland. Rennes remain 10 points out of first place,
but the gap at the top has been trimmed to just four points, with Lyon holding the edge over PSG.

Just days after compatriot Tim Howard advanced to a Cup final, Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes did the
same in France. Rennes advanced to the Coupe de France final with a 1-0 victory against Grenoble.
Moussa Sow's header in the first half proved to be the difference, while Bocanegra played 90
minutes at center back (not his customary position during his first season in france in France).

Tim Howard (Everton, English Premier League) – After a slow start to the Premier League
season, Everton have picked things up significantly, and the Toffees are up to sixth in the table.
Stade Rennes and Carlos Bocanegra started 2009 where they left off, beating Souchaux 1-0 in the 7th
Round of the Coupe de France. Carlos Bocanegra played the full ninety, and a Moussa Sow goal in the
70th minute was enough to send Rennes into the next round of the cup. See the goal here.
Over the weekend Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes were victorious in a game against Grenoble. Check out

Rennes unbeaten run finally came to an end this past weekend, after Carlos Bocanegra's team lost
1-0 to Lille. The loss dropped Rennes to 4th place in the Ligue 1 table, five points behind leaders
Lyon. Bocanegra and Rennes will look to get back on track with next Saturday's Coupe de France game
against St.
Rennes and Carlos Bocanegra were held to a 0-0 draw by Toulouse at home on Saturday. With that,
Rennes missed the opportunity to close the gap with leaders Lyon, who are in action today. In fact,
the match between Ligue 1's 4th and 5th place sides was pretty dour, by all accounts. Up next for
Rennes: a match with Le Havre before the international break.

Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes are making a late push for a fifth place spot in Ligue 1, and a berth
in next season's Europa League (the re-stylized UEFA Cup). Rennes beat PSG 1-0 on Sunday, to move
within four points of Toulouse who are currently in fifth position.
Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes were denied their first trophy in 38 years, losing 2-1 to Guingamp in a
dramatic Coupe de France final. Bocanegra headed Rennes in front at the Stade de France, after he
got on the end of a freekick midway through the second half. But lower division Guingamp did not
give up, with Eduardo grabbing two goals in the space of 11 minutes to turn the tide.
