In case you missed it, last night ESPN hosted the 18th Annual ESPY Awards. Amongst awards for
"Best Jockey" and "Best Bowler", they also handed out three awards to the US Men's National Team
(or specific players from the squad). Landon Donovan picked up the award for "Best MLS Player" and
the "Castrol Edge Performance Under Pressure Award" (not quite the Ballon d'Or, but it still
counts).
After a strong performance against Monaco in which he netted the game-winning goal, Bocanegra and
Rennes made it two on the trot as they visited Valenciennes on Sunday.
The Rest
Uneven, inconsistent, somewhat encouraging while at the the same time eminently maddening; the
United States' performance on Saturday night against Poland was all of those things. But what most
stuck out for fans and analysts alike was the strong performance by the team's long-awaited
addition, American-German Jermaine Jones.
Well, it could have been a lot worse. Tonight's USA performance was far from good, but against
one of the worlds best teams how much can we really expect? I know what we'd like to expect, of
course, but then reality sets in. We can only hope that Bob Bradley's men can turn out better
performances once they have a full squad, and hopefully Stuart Holden will recover from that
idiotic late tackle Nigel De Jong put in on him (it's called a friendly for a reason Nigel!
The roster was just announced. Here it is plus some immediate reaction to it: Keeper (3): Howard,
Guzan, Hannehemann Defense (7): Onweyu, Spector, Cherundolo, DeMerit, Goodson, Bocanegra, Bornstein
Midfield (9): Donovan, Dempsey, Edu, Clark, Bradley, Beasley, Holden, Torres, Feilhaber Forward
(4): Altidore, Buddle, Gomez, Findley The Good I'll start with the good news about this since the
bad news is going to far outweigh it.
So the USA has a game tomorrow night. We haven't really said much about it yet. So let's start.
Here's the roster from US Soccer, including former Wizards striker Eddie Johnson, who has been a
bigger factor of late for Fulham. Here's a preview from Jeff Carlisle/ESPN. Ives wants to know who
you'd start in the USA midfield.
The first chance to see a close to full-strength U.S. national team will come on Wednesday, and
while there are still several top players recovering from injuries, the match vs. the Netherlands
should provide a good measure of how strong the U.S. squad is just three months from the World
Cup.
The U.S. men's national team returns to action in a week and it will provide us our first
glimpse of the next cycle under head coach Bob Bradley.
Will Bradley start trying new things, which he seemed to suggest in his comments after his
re-hiring? Will we see a move away from the 4-4-2?
The U.S. national team will take on one of the world's top teams in its final test before the
World Cup roster is due when it faces the Netherlands at Amsterdam ArenA today (2:30pm, ESPN2 and
Galavision).
The U.S. should have its hands full as it faces a nearly full-strength Netherlands squad that
boasts plenty of attacking flair.

Win and they are in.
It's really that simple for the U.S. men's national team as it faces Algeria on Wednesday in its
final World Cup group match.
A draw could conceivably help the Americans qualify for the second round (if England loses or
ties while not closing in on the two-goal edge the United States currently holds in goals scored),
but all the Americans are thinking about going into the Algeria match is victory.

Here is Dave's projected starting lineup:
——— Jozy— Johnson———
Beasley–-Bradley—-Edu—-Donovan
Bocanegra-Goodson-DeMeritt-Pearce
———— -Howard————— -
Some readers have suggested that Bradley might be going with a 4-5-1 with Jozy alone at the
top.
Klaas Jan Huntelaar doubled the Dutch lead in the 73rd minute with a shot from the 18 which
cannoned off Jonathan Bornstein's side and wrong-footed Tim Howard. The US pulled one back with a
minute to go when Beasley curls in a free kick and Bocanegra ghosts in unmarked to nod past
Stekelenburg.Reports, interviews and more to follow.

The most important non-World Cup match of the year for the U.S. national team will take place on
Tuesday, when the United States faces the Czech Republic in a friendly in East Hartford,
Connecticut.
Taking a look at those certain to be in the starting eleven come Saturday.
With only a few days now until the World Cup opener against England, Bob Bradley's got plenty
left to figure out. The news about Jozy Altidore's return to full training might make things a
little clearer, but as I mentioned the other day, nothing else is coming easy.
Whew. Extra time is a great rule, ain't it?
The Americans needed all 90 minutes and then some to knock off Algeria and secure a spot in the
knockout stages of the 2010 World Cup. For most of the match, Algeria's stout defense smothered the
American offense with tough tackling and a threatening counterattack.
... A nation was ready to believe on this Saturday afternoon. Across the United States, the
hardcores and the newbies gathered alike in bars, basements, and outside viewing areas to watch
their new heroes take on Ghana and try to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals.
They were ready to back their heart-filled group of 11 .
Checked in on the Google Analytics today as we prepare to launch a few new pages / site designs for
the new [fantasy] Premier League season. Make sure to come back soon for some cool new layouts.
In the meantime, here are a few off the wall search terms from Google that ended up at our doors
since July 1st.
After hearing Jermaine Jones and Michael Bradley having a laugh while speaking German in the
training room this morning, it occcured to us that the language skills amongst this group are
pretty high. We've got several bilingual players, and a pair of guys who speak three languages:
Jozy Altidore - Spanish
Alejandro Bedoya - Spanish
Carlos Bocanegra - French
Michael Bradley - Dutch, German
Steve Cherundolo - German
Benny Feilhaber - Portuguese
Jermaine Jones - German
Oguchi Onyewu - French, Italian
Stuart Holden tried to convince us that speaking Scottish should count.
With the World Cup now only 84 days away and with final squads still not having been set, now
seems as good a time as any to start doing our match previews. Over the next few weeks, we'll be
doing a team by team breakdown to try to figure out how the predicted USA starting eleven stack up
against their various opponents.
Second night in a row glued to the DVR. Thank you, TiVo, for introducing me to such a
beautiful service. Last night I analyzed some of the fantasy studs that England and Mexico will
showcase at the World Cup, and tonight I plan on taking a deep look at the USA. Join me for the
minute by minute stream of consciousness analysis:

U.S. forward Landon Donovan from today's press conference on tomorrow's match against a talented
Turkey team.
U.S. head coach BOB BRADLEY
On the final decisions to make in terms of the lineup:
"We're pretty set with most of our lineup.
1. While Findley's inclusion in the roster made me worry that Bradley might
not like the Altidore-Dempsey forward pairing, this is the one we
will see today, giving us some real hope of seeing it in the World Cup.
2. Bradley will use this game to test the versatility of his players.
By now the US needed shock therapy. Bradley brought in Steve Cherundolo, Oguchi Onyewu, Jose
Torres, and Robbie Findley on resumption of the second half. Out went Spector, Goodson, Clark, and
Benny Feilhaber. The moribund attack received an instant lift.
46 minutes +: Michael Bradley almost gave the USA the equalizer on the onset as Bocanegra floats
in a long cross into the box, nicely controlled by Donovan, who cuts the ball back but Bradley has
his shot blocked by Servet Cetin in the nick of time.

The Americans are coming off a 2-1 win against Turkey in Philadelphia last week, and should get

The U.S. men's national team begins World Cup play on Saturday against England in a match
American fans have been anxiously awaiting since the teams were drawn together in December.
While I'm sure you have read dozens of previews on the match, here is my Fox Soccer preview on
the big USA-England match.
It was the most hyped game in U.S. soccer history. U.S.A. v England at the World Cup. And the
U.S. team lived up to the hype, drawing 1-1 against the heavily favored English.
Before the game, the feeling was that for the U.S. to get something from the game they would
need Tim Howard to paly really well and that they would need to get some luck.
Robert Green made one great blunder and one great save to preserve the draw today. His Dr.
Jekyll moment was saving a blast from Jozy Altidore at the near post from close range. His Mr. Hyde
moment was allowing Clint Dempsey's long range shot to bounce off his gloves and into the goal.
Although Robert Green wasn't the only reason for the draw, his individual efforts or lack there
of were the defining moments.
The United States Starting Eleven for today's match against Algeria has been announced:
- GK: Howard
- D: Cherundolo, DeMerit, Bocanegra (c), Bornstein
- MF: Donovan, Bradley, Edu, Dempsey
- F: Gomez, Altidore
Clearly, the shocker there is no Oguchi Onyewu on defense.

With the Group Stage behind them, the U.S. men's national team can now focus on trying to make a
dream run to the World Cup final a year after making a dream run to the Confederations Cup
Final.
Standing in the way at the first knockout round hurdle is Ghana, which happens to be the same
team that eliminated the United States in the 2006 World Cup.

The Chicago Fire announced today that they will introduce a new Designated Player on Saturday.
Rumors are amok and flimsy at best. Who could it be now? Do you think they would give Cuauhtemoc
Blanco DP money to return?
Photo by IISIphotos.comThe highly-anticipated USA-Brazil friendly is just five days away, and now that we know who the
United States will be fielding, it's time to take a look at what the starting lineup might look
like on Tuesday.
The inclusion of Jozy Altidore to the squad should shake up the look of what we can expect from
Bob Bradley against the Brazilians.

Was letting Joey Porter go a good idea? Is Karlos Dansby really the upgrade the team needs and
expects him to be? Wait, this post isn't actually about Miami Dolphins linebackers, what am I
doing? Let's try starting this again. Left back. It's that time again, Yanks fans. Time to circle
back after tabling the issue and brainstorm to find dynamic solutions, lower risk, and increase
productivity at this position.
One of the most interesting developments in US soccer over this World Cup cycle is the migration of
American talent to Europe. The number of yanks abroad has been steadily increasing, as are the
contributions to their teams:
World Cup Squad Breakdowns

Even though the breakdown was the same for 2002 and 2006, it's clear that the amount of YA talent
increased dramatically.
