With the 271st derby (I added 9 since this Gazzetta article) between Milan AC and Inter Milan
coming up next Sunday, I thought I would give you my recipe for what makes incredible derbies (I
also include classics here which differ in that derbies concern 2 clubs in the same city or at
least in the same region):
- Start by adding at least 70 years or more of statistics to show for
- Stir with the football passion that only some cities can bring
- Spice up with political differences
- Cook with the memories of some legendary matches and stars
- Serve hot with the inimitable parfum that makes these derbies and classics
passionately debated from one generation to the next
The top 6 derby matches/classics in my opinion are:
- Boca Juniors River Plate (I'm for Boca)
- Milan Inter (I root for Milan)
- Barça Real Madrid (go Barça)
- Rangers Celtic (neutral here)
- Flamengo Fluminense (Fla!
It may not count for anything, but a superclásico always attracts a lot of attention regardless,
so here are the goals from Wednesday night's 3-1 River Plate victory in the Copa Desafío in Mar
del Plata. The two teams will square up again in Mendoza at the weekend for the Copa Revancha.

Tonight in Mar Del Plata River Plate defeated Boca Juniors 3-1 to be crowned champions of the
"Copa Desafio". With goals by Rodrigo Rojas (19), Gabriel Funes Mori (19) and Daniel Villalba (17)
River claimed the first superclásico of the year. The first goal was scored just before the 4
minutes of play, Chilean International Gary Medel made a mistake in the back and gave the ball to
Rodrigo Rojas, who made a run towards the goal and scored on a low shot.
Last year Chris Henderson had to find 24 players players to craft a winning expansion side. This
year, he had to find less players and I started off asking if that helped him focus.
Chris Henderson: Last year was very unique, we needed every position. But this year we could
focus our time and our energy.
