Boca-River? ¿O un Liverpool-Manchester United?

There is soccer action galore on TV today, with a handful of top-notch rivalries on display.
Manchester United-Liverpool is the marquee game of the day, but there is so much more to watch.
West Ham-Arsenal, Boca-River, Club America-Chivas and Marseille-Paris St. Germain are some of the
quality tilts American soccer fans will have to choose from today.

There's a vital grudge match in England this afternoon as Liverpool host Manchester United in the
Premier League, and also today Indian football hosts a less globally famous but no less passionate
derby with Mohun Bagan taking on East Bengal. For a change, I'm not going to bill the superclásico
as the world's biggest derby [.

Call it Rafa's Last Stand.
When Manchester United travels to Anfield on Sunday to take on Liverpool, the defending EPL
champions will have a very real chance of beating the struggling Reds and pushing Rafa Benitez one
step closer to the exit door.
Liverpool has already lost four matches this year in the EPL, and dropped more points in
Champions League at mid-week, making Sunday's match a virtual must-win for the under-fire Spanish
manager.

So branching out from the usual look at just this weekend's festivities, let's move into some
present weirdnesses and see what the crystal bowl is showing us now about events around the bend
(or off the deep end, as the case may be).
1. The indefinite delay of the Argentine Primera Division's 2009 Clausura season (read that story
here), which is absolutely shocking to me.

River Plate's El Monumental has been Argentina's World Cup venue
Diego Maradona continues his divisive ways.
He was said to have complained about the state of the Mounmental stadium describing it as "a
pasture" before the Colombia match. The topic cropped up again after the loss to Ecuador, when
Maradona expressed his unhappiness about the stadium being the venue for the match against
Brazil.

There weren't too many high points in Sunday's super, truth be told, but what the match did have
was two fine goals from two veterans of the Argentine football scene. You can see Martín Palermo's
smart turn and thirty-yard rocket, and Marcelo Gallardo's twenty-five yard free kick (he changed
his mind about which side of [.

Sunday, 19th April sees what might be an historic clash in La Bombonera between Boca Juniors and
River Plate. If Julio Grondona gets his (and the only rule that's ever followed in Argentine
football is that what Don Julio wants, Don Julio gets) this will be the last superclásico of the
'short tournament' era.

Hablar de un clásico tan importante en Argentina, no es fácil ni
predicible. Son partidos especiales, únicos, dónde el ganador recibe una inyección anímica muy
importante.
En éstos encuentros, el estado de forma no es evaluable. Pueden llegar al
partido, bien, mal o regular pero el desenlace puede ser otro.

The tenth round of the 2009 Torneo Clausura gets underway tonight, and a match between two sides
who are off the pace in the race for the title has been taking up all the attention in the
Argentine media for days now, and will on Sunday give Argentina the chance to show its league off

la revista World Soccer.

It's super clasico week. Guadalajara warmed up for their big game with Club America this weekend by
blaming the ball for not going into the net in their Libetrtadores scoreless draw vs. Lanus.
America, on the other hand anxiously awaits the stauts of their superstar, Salvador Cabañas, who
strained a muscle after netting a hat trick vs.

At long last, we're within a week of the return of proper domestic football to the Argentine top
flight. The curtain is coming down on the summer tournaments with a bad-blooded Copa
Ciudad de Mendoza (AKA Copa Revancha) in which Boca Juniors outclassed River Plate,
and plenty of other sides were in action over the weekend as well.

It's been four years since Boca Juniors last beat River Plate in La Bombonera, during which time
