¡Qué trágico! for poor Diego Buonanotte. If you haven't heard, the
influential River Plate midfielder was involved in a fatal car crash which
killed three of his friends on Saturday. And according to the Argentinean dailies,
Diego, who is in the hospital now frequently wakes up in the middle of the night asking "what
happened?

The Argentine Primera Division has several matches on Sunday, December 13, 2009 including Boca
Juniors v Banfield. The match will be covered live on our other site, Free Live Sports TV, at the
link below.
Boca Juniors v Banfield
In the Estadio Florencia Sola they're celebrating along with those in the upper tier of La
Bombonera. Banfield may have lost to Boca Juniors, but for the first time in their 113 year
history, they're champions of Argentina thanks to San Lorenzo's 2 0 win away to Newell's Old Boys
which ended the lingering [.
In any profession it is one of the toughest moments one can endure. To see all of the hard work
that one has invested throughout the years now lead a person to a crossroads is a tough pill to
swallow. It is twice as difficult when an athlete has to leave the sport they love because their
body no longer responds.
Yesterday we heard from Robb Heineman how the Wizards had signed two new international players, one
a center back, the other a defensive midfielder. My assumption at the time I saw the tweet was that
the center back was one of the 3 Colombians that MLS had recently signed. Then this morning, this
forum post was pointed out to me.
The fixtures for the 2010 Torneo Clausura have been available on the AFA's website for a couple of
weeks, but now the Apertura is well over and there's precious little else going on, it seems an
appropriate time to post them up in English here. All the dates given correspond to the Sunday of
each [..

Going into the seventeenth round of fixtures in the Torneo Apertura, here's a brief rundown of
what's been going on off the pitch in the last few days. Estudiantes, of course, leave for the UAE
to take part in the Club World Cup this weekend, and they played their final domestic match of the
year [..
The right combination of results this weekend could see Newell's all but secure the title, or at
least ensure that they and Banfield will be the only teams left in the title hunt going into the
last two rounds of matches. Estudiantes' domestic 2009 is already over they drew 0-0 with Chacarita
Juniors last [.
A long time ago in a continent not so far away, I was basking in youthful rebellion and
wandering the streets of Buenos Aires with a fistful of American dollars and the cocky gait to
match. The pretext for my musings was a semester abroad, but the real motive was a "cultural
exchange." The economy had recently tanked, and with a favorable exchange rate, I wanted to cash in
on a weak peso and an abundance of milanesa.
San Lorenzo lost 2-1 to Argentinos Juniors on Saturday, and just as I type this Boca Juniors have
lost at home to Independiente by the same score. River Plate don't even play until tomorrow, but
their bitter rivals losing matches isn't the best news of the day for them. Because on Saturday
night the votes [.
Following a controversial election which was 'won' by Rodolfo D'Onofrio by a margin of only two
votes, a recount was held which went into the early hours of Sunday morning, and the result is in:
Daniel Passarella, former player and manager, is the new president of Club Atlético River Plate,
having won 5,298 votes to [.
Nothing's been decided yet, but Banfield are clearly the biggest beneficiaries of the weekend.
Their win on Friday combined with later losses for both Colón (at the hands of Atlético Tucumán)
and Newell's (to Arsenal) to leave El Taladro two points clear of Newell's with two games to go.
Elsewhere, Vélez beat River with two [.
At the end of Week 17.
1. Banfield – 38
2. Newell's Old Boys – 36
3. Velez Sarsfield – 33
4. Independiente – 32
5. Colon – 31
6. Estudiantes – 31

Living the dream
Fancy going to see the Boca Juniors v River Plate Superclásico in Argentina? Of course you do.
It's the one match every football fan must see before they die. Well, how about seeing that match
and then staying on in Argentina to capture loads more fanatical fan behaviour on film before
moving onto Brazil, South Korea, Serbia and pretty the rest of the free world watching football -
sounds alright doesn't it!
Don't worry, Argentines Abroad (or a curtailed version of it) will be online at some point later in
the week, but the pressing issue for now is that the penultimate round of the Torneo Apertura takes
place in midweek. Banfield play after Newell's and Pablo Lunati, who refereed and gave some dodgy
decisions against [.
Tuesday evening saw just three goals spread across the three games: Huracán and Boca drew 0-0;
Colón beat Godoy Cruz 1-0, whilst Independiente and Argentinos Juniors drew 1-1 in Avellaneda. You
can watch all of those goals plus a couple of brief highlights of Huracán vs Boca right here.
Huracán (white) vs Boca (navy [.
The title race is going to the wire (both Banfield and Newell's will kick off at 17:00 local time
on Sunday), as is the final Copa Libertadores spot. Midweek rounds in the Argentine domestic league
always seem to be low scoring (maybe it's just my imagination, but...), and the highest scoring
match this week was [.
Things are still way behind here during my final full weekend in Buenos Aires, so let's just get
straight to the matches.
Perhaps the big news as far as club matches this week is that there should be a few more
champions crowned here in the Western Hemisphere this week. With a victory on Sunday over Boca
Juniors, Banfield can clinch a rare Argentine championship.
The final round of the 2009 Torneo Apertura will see the title decided along with the final Copa
Libertadores qualification place. Banfield visit Boca Juniors at the same time as Newell's host San
Lorenzo, with Banfield two points ahead of the rosarinos at present. If they finish level on
points, a playoff will decide the [.
I've been going back and forth on what to call this entry, but after two months in Argentina,
this will be the final WCR Top 25 from here and it seems fitting to commemorate that fact. This
time next week, I'll be back in the United States for a few weeks and the rankings will be based
there.
I thought about commemorating more Western Hemisphere championships with the title.
113 years. That's how long Argentina's Banfield took to claim
their first Apertura title! But that's how long it's also going to take AC Milan to find a new
president as well...
Interestingly, Banfield, a city in Buenos Aires was founded in 1896 by English, Irish and
Scottish immigrants.
Sunday's matches were orderly in scoreline if nothing else: there were four 2-0 scorelines, all but
one of those going to the away side (Boca, who beat Banfield 2-0, were the only home victors but
their victims didn't care because they took the title anyway). Vélez Sársfield vs Rosario Central
was the sole exception [.

BOCA JUNIORS 2X0 BANFIELD
The annual U.S. Soccer Foundation holiday auction is now up and running. The auction features a
Kansas City Wizards 2009 autographed team jersey, among many other outstanding items. Some of the
other international options? A 2009 FC Barcelona autographed pennant, signed jerseys from Rangers,
West Ham, Boca Juniors, AS Monaco and Arsenal.
I really needed an early night on Monday, which is why the full scores from the final round of a
wonderful Torneo Apertura didn't go up as usual right after the last match. Monday's two games saw
only one goal Atlético Tucumán beat Gimnasia but you can watch it here all the same. [...]
confederaciones.
Ricardo Caruso Lombardi confirmed on Wednesday night that he'll be Diego Cagna's successor at
Tigre, returning to the club whom he took from Primera B into the B Nacional (third to second
flight) in 2005. Not such good news from the judiciary system, though: Rafael Di Zeo, the former
capo of Boca Juniors' barra brava, [.

The Torneo Apertura started in chaos, with no-one sure which TV channels games would be screened on
and many finding it so difficult to find just one title contender that Boca Juniors, of all teams,
were held up by some commentators as the most likely candidates (I'd never make a silly mistake
like that of [.
