1. (Last week: 1). Chelsea
Hey, what happened to all the Man Utd fans who were complaining because their team wasn't #1? The
Soccer Source ranking committee once again proved its mettle with the choice of Chelsea, which is
suddenly not looking very controversial after Blues saw off Man. City Saturday.
We still have two weeks to go until last season's results are erased from the
databases for English clubs (three weeks for some others), yet Manchester United has already
managed to lose the advantage that it carried into this season.
River Plate and Boca Juniors. Undisputably, the two biggest clubs in Argentine football. River, the
defending champions in the league. Boca, six times champions of South America, most recently just
last year. On Sunday, both were playing much smaller teams. River hadn't ever lost away to new
promoted San Martín, and returned to Tucumán 15 [.
It's time for the most ridiculous international club football competition in the world - the Copa
Sudamericana - to enter its quarter-final stage. The uniquely television-obsessed way the
tournament is organised means that invitees Boca Juniors and River Plate will play their first
matches tonight, one round later than Arsenal de Sarandí, who are the defending [.
The Copa Sudamericana, South American Cup like Uefa Cup in Europe. One lever lower then the Copa
Libertadores. Boca Juniors are meeting LDU Quito Wednesday September 24th. Don`t forget

By definition, the Donnety award goes to the player who has been the biggest disappointment this
year. Yes, harsh, I know. But this award's definition could probably be interpreted in a couple
different ways. And because I love controversy, of course I will leave that interpretation up to
you. Do you give the award to a guy who has played well at times, but hasn't lived up to the hype
or to his high salary?
An extra treat this week, because the goals from the lower divisions have been put online by TN as
well - something they do sometimes and not at others. For the Primera A goals of the weekend, all
twenty-two of them, including an absolutely unbelievable one from José Sand for Lanús
(the first of his [.
It's been a long two weeks away from top flight club action, but after the disappointments of the
selección's performances against Paraguay and Peru, the Primera A is back to provide us -
surely - with some good football and excitement once again. Champions River Plate have been
experimenting during the break and it's anyone's guess [.
There was no doubt as to the hot issue of the day in the Argentine press on Monday. The Boca
Juniors vs. Independiente clásico in La Bombonera saw two red cards for the visitors during a
second half which referee Pablo Lunati seemed to be losing control of at one point. Guillermo
Rodríguez grabbed a [.
The sixth match of the Apertura was the date preordained by River Plate manager Diego Simeone as
the day his first-choice side would finally come to life. Oh dear oh dear. River lost at home to
Vélez on Wednesday and, one third of the way through the campaign, surely can't afford any
more slip-ups if [.
The sixth round of fixtures is upon us already. Don't worry, you've not just lost five days of your
life; we're playing in midweek to catch up from the international break last week. Highlights of
this midweek round include River's quest for a decent performance continuing at home to Vélez,
a relegation clash between Godoy [.
On Friday night, Tigre kept up the pressure on leaders San Lorenzo, who kept their noses in front
thanks to a comfortable win over Arsenal the following day. Sunday was clásico day, with River
matching Racing blow-for-blow in a supremely entertaining match of six goals before Estudiantes
eased past neighbours Gimnasia in the clásico de [.
Boca Juniors' striker Ricardo Noir is the latest gem to emerge from the club's prolific youth
program. After a thunderous start to his first-team career, he is now being looked at
by various Spanish teams as a viable option or development project for any team that looks to have
one of the top goalscorers of [.
What a wild weekend in Argentina as we saw several ties, red cards, and maybe the best game in
Jujuy. Here is the good and the bad from the weekend.
The Good -
Adrian Gonzalez (San Lorenzo) - The San Lorenzo forward scored two goals in an important win for
the cuervos over Rosario Central.
It's all domestic football this week. Without so much as time to take a breath, the seventh round
of the Apertura is already looming. There's an all-Sur clash between Arsenal and Banfield in
Sarandí, leaders San Lorenzo host Colón and Racing are in bad need of a win against the
newly managerless Estudiantes.

River and Boca both suffered shock defeats on Sunday, San Lorenzo won on Friday to ensure they
still top the table tonight regardless, and Vélez, who won well against Central on Saturday,
are close behind them. Racing, having seen a three match unbeaten run ended in midweek by
Huracán, got back to winnings ways against managerless [.
There were thirty goals from nine matches this weekend in Primera A (only Lanús vs.
Huracán finished goalless), including two five-goal matches, in La Bombonera and El Viaducto,
and two featuring four goals: one in Tucumán and one in El Bosque. You can watch the lot on
the TN Sportblog right here, and read on [.
It was League Cup day in England and Scotland, but halfway across the world, Boca Juniors also
fielded a side largely made up of youngsters in a second-rate knockout competition. In this case it
was the Copa Sudamericana, and the opposition were the champions of South America - recent Copa
Libertadores winners Liga de Quito.
The goals from the eighth round of the 2008 Torneo Apertura are online now and as always, you can
view all 32 of them on the TN Sportblog, right here. Read on for the running order of the video.

Columbus Crew midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto continues to rake in the honors following
another stellar performance this past weekend. The former Boca Juniors hero scored the opening goal
and then added two helpers in the Crew's 4-0 win over Eastern rivals New England, earning him
Player of the Week honors for the fourth time in 2008.
So, I started school over a week ago and ever since the number of my blog entries has been 0. I've
obviously been pretty busy. So this morning when I got an email from Soccerblogs.net saying that I
was being added to their site I was newly motivated. Here are a couple of things I've been thinking
about this past week.
Genoa forward Luciano Figueroa could be heading back to Argentina if the player agrees with the
six-time Copa Libertadores champs. His agent offered the player to the Argentine giants, but
there are doubt as to what would his exact function be with the club. Event though the club's
first option was Betis' Mariano Pavone, the [.
It's been an interesting weekend in Primera A, with Gimnasia de Jujuy and Huracán giving us a
seven goal thriller to kick it off, Racing making it three matches unbeaten, the two promotees
sharing the spoils in Tucumán, and River stumbling again. There was also a draw in a very
heated clásico between Boca and [.

The goals from the weekend just gone are online now, and you can see them on the TN Sportblog by

the ridiculous quality of some of the goals in the Gimnasia de Jujuy vs. Huracán thriller, not

Sunday is clásico day this weekend, with River hosting Racing in the country's oldest derby
before Gimnasia visit Estudiantes - as a genuine away team, for the first time in a few years - in
the La Plata derby. Boca - who beat Newell's 4-2 in the remaining match from round two on Thursday
