Boca Junior's Juan Roman Riquelme had been arguing with 21 year old Boca fan Augustin Pozzetti
earlier in this home game vs Racing, so after volleying a 60th minute winner the playmaker ran 55
yards to point an angry finger at Pozzetti. Unfortunately, Pozzetti's fellow Boca fans then turned
on the non-believer and a fight broke [.
Argentine soccer has reached uncharted territory after victories by Boca Juniors, San Lorenzo
and Tigres on the last weekend of the regular season set-up an improbable three-way tie atop the
Apertura Standings.
Boca Juniors cruised to a 3-2 victory against Colon, San Lorenzo squeezed out a 1-0 win against
Argentinos Junior and Tigre held on for a 1-0 victory against Banfield.
Welcome to the year-end edition of the Top 25. With all but the English Premiership on hiatus this
week, we will not have a new ranking until 2009. So happy holidays and happy new year! Now let's
get to the rankings:
1 (1). FC Barcelona
This just in: Barca are awesome. They have passed every single test thrown at them this season, the
most recent one coming at Villareal yesterday.
The AFA's incompetence in organising a playoff system that might have either rendered the final
match meaningless, or ensured that one team would go into it without any motivation to win,
has been papered over by Boca Juniors, who on Saturday evening beat San Lorenzo de Almagro 3-1 in
Racing's stadium.

Hopefully all HEGS readers had a good few days off for Christmas (those who had days off for it, at
least). After a couple of days away from the keyboard myself (you only need a mouse to play
Football Manager), I hope I've now got things straight enough to look back on what was a [...]
It's not over just yet. The Torneo Apertura proper came to a conclusion this weekend but so far we
only know the order of things at one end of the table. Yes that's right, it's official: River Plate
are rubbish. The top four all won - in Lanús's case in vain - so the title [...]
So it comes to this. The 2008 Torneo Apertura title will be decided by virtue of a three-way
'mini-league' (new Spanish word alert: that's 'liguilla')between San Lorenzo, Boca Juniors and
Tigre, who've all finished the normal season on 39 points. The fixtures were drawn up on Sunday
night at the AFA headquarters.
By the end of today, Argentina will have a new champion. San Lorenzo are out of the running due to
the goal difference mathematics, so it's a straight race between Boca Juniors and Tigre. Boca have
won twenty-eight titles (amateur and professional), whilst Tigre have finished second, once - and
that was a year ago.
At the time of writing, TN haven't got round to putting this week's Show de Goles onto their blog
yet, so instead, I'm embedding it directly into this page. Read on to see the goals, and the normal
running order, as well as a couple of links to the TN videos of goals from the [...]
At the end of game one of this dramatic, title-deciding, three-way playoff for the 2008 Argentine
Apertura league championship any Tigre fans contemplating their team's title prospects could have
been easily forgiven for feeling decidedly pessimistic and glum. A 2-1 defeat to San Lorenzo in the
first game of the triangular meant that any hopes of ending a 106 year wait for league glory were
Boca Juniors soon to be technical-director, Carlos Bianchi, has identified the position of
goalkeeper as the one they really need to strengthen for next year's Copa Libertadores and believes
that Getafe custodian Roberto Abbondanzieri could be the man for the role. Carlos Ischia's side may
have secured the Argentine Apertura title, but with young goalkeeper Javier Garcia prone to errors

The penultimate weekend of the Torneo Apertura 2008 might see the title race decided, but it's
unlikely. Lanús get things going away to Vélez; win and they'll crank up the pressure on
the sides above them. The other contenders all play on Sunday. If Boca win away to Gimnasia La
Plata, and Tigre (away to [.
To start the ball rolling for the next edition of the Copa Libertadores de América, the
Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (CONMEBOL) have released their latest all-time
league table of the best teams since the competition began. And thus, 2009 can end on a happier
note for River Plate fans of a slightly idiotic bent.
Boca Juniors edge closer to the title but Tigre, after ensuring River Plate remain bottom, are
still right on their heels. Gimnasia La Plata climbed to the top of the Promedio relegation zone
and dragged Colón towards it, should the sides below them have a run at some point. The other
relegation clash, in Jujuy [.
The Argentine title race is closer than it's ever been. Two years ago, Boca Juniors lost their last
two matches to set up a playoff - the first ever - against Estudiantes which the La Plata side won.
On Sunday this weekend, Boca drew away to Gimnasia La Plata, at the same time as Tigre [...]

20.12.2008 - Torneo Apertura
San Lorenzo - Boca Juniors 1:3
Boca Juniors ended San Lorenzo's hopes of winning the 2008 Apertura with a 3-1 victory on Saturday
that leaves Carlos Ischia's side in pole position for the title ahead of the final playoff game
between them and Tigre on Tuesday. San Lorenzo went into the match knowing that a win would secure
them the championship, and had two golden opportunities to take the lead in the first 45 minutes -
In the end it was the most nail-biting of finishes, as Tigre tried and tried to break down Boca's
resistance, but the most incredible of titles wasn't to be. Boca lost the match, 1-0, to a Leandro
Lázzaro header midway through the second half - but with all three sides tied on three points
in [...]
Boca Juniors 0-1 Tigre - Boca champions on goal difference. As the referee sounded the final
whistle in Avellaneda and brought a close to this most dramatic of finales, the trivial
consequences of Tigre's 1-0 win became clear in the most soul-destroying, crushing of all
circumstances for those associated with El Matador.

Lanús won; Boca drew; Tigre and San Lorenzo were both victorious, and the race for the Torneo
Apertura title this year will go to the last weekend, with four teams still involved. River Plate
lost in Vélez's stadium to Godoy Cruz, and are two adrift at the bottom. Get the full lowdown
from all the [.
The Torneo Apertura 2008 ends this weekend, and whatever happens now, it's been a good one. All of
the matches featuring title contenders - and also, for some reason, Independiente vs. Arsenal - are
taking place at the same time on Sunday. Friday sees a key relegation clash in Rosario, whilst the
meaningless matches are [.
The destination of the 2008 Torneo Apertura title probably won't be decided today - that would
require only one of the top three to win - but those who aren't able to watch any of the matches
can follow it here. I won't be doing live match reports (if you're wondering why, you try watching

Boca Juniors, San Lorenzo and - who'd have thunk it? - Tigre will have to play a three-team playoff
to decide the 2008 Primera A Torneo Apertura title, after all three won their last matches of the
campaign on Sunday to finish on 39 points. Lanús, who beat San Martín de Tucumán,
are out of [...]
The 2008 Argentina Apertura has ended with San Lorenzo, Boca Juniors and Tigres tied at the top of
the table. All three teams were hoping to take the title on the final day, but all three won and
finished on 39 points. The league doesn't use goal difference to separate teams, so playoffs it is.

The goals from the nineteenth round of the Torneo Apertura aren't being put on the TN website this
week, because they're going on the assumption that all you want to see is the goals from the
matches involving the 'finalists'. If you'd like to see all the goals, you'll have to do so right
here, [...]
For the first time in history of the Torneo Apertura or Opening (there are two seasons in
Argentina) championship in Argentina, three teams ended up level on points (39). Boca Juniors, who
have 22 domestic titles. San Lorenzo, who have 10 domestic titles. Tigre, who have never won any
domestic silverware.
Last weekend's predictions did not go well. Let's say no more than that. So better luck this
weekend? We'll see. Some big games, including the FIFA Club World Cup Final. Technically the
biggest game in club football. Even though it isn't. Read on to see the games worth watching this
weekend, and some entirely unreliable [.
