Happy new year, everyone. The year may only be two days old, but already 2008 is well underway in
the Argentine footballing world. One basic but important thing to mention first: new president
Cristina Kirchner's decision to bring a daylight savings system back to Argentina means the country
is now only two hours behind Greenwich [.
The highlight of Boca vs. San Lorenzo on Saturday night was a classic from the scrapbook: a free
kick taken from a collection of Juan Román Riquelme's finest, on the day the world's finest
playmaker returned to his boyhood club. One small difference, though: it was Claudio Morel
Rodríguez, not Riquelme, who placed the ball [.
The past year and only 42 appearances in a Boca uniform has seen this young 19-year old
Argentinian midfielder - very much in the vein of Javier Mascherano at Liverpool and Fernando
Gago at Real Madrid - help Boca Juniors win the Copa Libertadores, while ALSO hoisting the World
Cup with the Argentinian U-20s.
With the vote on a $2.9 billion funding package that includes money for a soccer stadium less then
a week away, Miami Mayor Manny Diaz is pushing hard to make it happen. The crux of the debate
revolves around what the city will do with the site of the current Orange Bowl (which will be torn
down next month).
River, Huracán and San Lorenzo all welcomed new signings on Wednesday, with Boca suffering a minor
injury setback to their pre-season training schedule. Meanwhile, Independiente have had another
hard day in training following Germán Denis's dog attack on Monday, and Germán Herrera, the
Argentine striker who's just signed for recently relegated Corinthians in Brazil, receiving a
somewhat backhanded [.
The publication of this editorial got pushed back by a few days because I was ill earlier in the
week not not up to spending too much time typing, but it's coincided nicely with the Arab new year.
We've got a few readers in that part of the world, so happy new year to all [...]
Like Diego Simeone at great rivals River Plate, new Boca Juniors boss Carlos Ischia started his
tenure with a Torneo de Verano friendly against Independiente in Mar del Plata. Unlike Simeone's
River, there were some first-team players in Boca's lineup: Leandro Gracián was given the
playmaker's role and Matías Silvestre was sent off late on.
It's difficult to know who'll be more disappointed after Tuesday night's Torneo de Verano match-up.
On the one hand, Racing are at a low enough point that they'll be expected to be happy with a
goalless draw against a team made of youth players and reserves. On the other, Boca's youth players
and reserves, who [.
Well, that's one way to do it. Carlos Ischia wasn't the Boca fans' choice of new manager, and his
appointment caused some anger towards Pedro Pompilio when the latter first unveiled him, but on
Saturday night, in the Estadio Mundialista of Mar del Plata, he took a huge step to winning over
the fans: He [.
There's been commotion in Italy on Saturday, as Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri walked out of a
press conference after the assembled hacks pushed him on the future of Argentine playmaker Sergio
Almirón, who's wanted by River Plate. Boca Juniors signing Julio César Cáceres revealed he's
taking a pay cut to join his new side, and [.
Italy's Serie A returned to action last week, meaning that the Bundesliga is the only major
European league (at least the ones that I follow) still on its winter break. The Germans will be
back in action soon enough. In the meantime, there was plenty of other stuff that went down. Here's
how it affected the rankings:
1.
Hugo Tocalli took charge on Thursday of his first practice as Vélez Sársfield boss, as players at
most of Argentina's top flight clubs returned from their summer holidays to commence pre-season
training. Elsewhere, Matías Silvestre has insisted he's not going down without a fight at Boca,
Juan Sebastián Verón had some cutting words for Diego [.
It was a quiet Sunday afternoon, really. Sergio Agüero was man of the match as Atlético de Madrid
comfortably beat Deportivo La Coruña 3-0 in A Coruña, setting up two and scoring the second.
Fabricio Coloccini, who started for the hosts, didn't have the best of matches. Oh, and a Clarín
online poll which is [.
Can anybody catch Real Madrid?
That's the big question in Spain with the defending champions holding a seven-point lead in the
La Liga standings. If Real is going to be brought back to the pack then Villarreal is going to have
to pull the upset this weekend. The Yellow Submarine is 12 points back in third place and need a
win on Sunday to keep alive its hopes as well as Barcelona's hopes of catching Real Madrid.
Ramón Cabrero has a little over two weeks remaining to get his charges ready for their first taste
of Copa Libertadores action, but insisted on Monday that Lanús are up to the challenge of going
head-to-head with some of South America's biggest clubs. First, of course, they've got to get past
Ecuadorian side Olmedo.
With the Argentine Clausura league championship and the Copa Libertadores getting ready to kick
off, I sought out the preeminent expert on Argentina to share his thoughts. Both tournaments
represent what is in my opinion the best club soccer outside of Europe's big three leagues, but
most people outside Latin America (myself included) are pretty ignorant on both topics.
One of the groups for the 2008 Copa Libertadores is now complete, with América de México
defeating Cruz Azul on penalties in the final of their country's Interliga, the Mexican qualifying
tournament for the Copa. With this victory, América will go into Group 5, where they'll be taking
on Diego Simeone's River Plate, as well as San [.
Lionel Messi's training with Barcelona during the week has gone well, and he's included in Frank
Rijkaard's squad for Sunday's Spanish First Division match against Racing de Santander. In perhaps
the only Argentine-player-related story that could have eclipsed that one, the Torneo de Verano
will see a big moment for Boca Juniors later on Saturday: [.
The internet has given us many, many great things. It is given us the chance listen to Manuel Ruiz
de Lopera whenever we want and, of course, it has given us La Liga Loca. It has also given bored
footballers something to do when they are not driving into police cars like Royston Drenthe or
flicking through Stuff magazine in the gym, like Ronaldino.
Boca Juniors defender Matías Silvestre was sold to Serie A side Catania for an estimated US$3
million. The former Boca defender signed a three-year deal with the Italian side. Silvestre, who
has various titles under his belt during the Alfio Basile era, was not taken into account during
the Miguel Ángel Russo era and the same goes for current coach Carlos Ischia.
