With just a few days remaining before the 2008 Torneo Clausura begins, some of the sides are still
going over their options when it comes to the formations and personnel for their opening matches.
No such trouble for Argentina's Olympic manager Sergio Batista, who already seems to know his
starting XI for Wednesday's match against Guatemala [.
Happy new year, everyone. The year may only be two days old, but already 2008 is well underway in
the Argentine footballing world. One basic but important thing to mention first: new president
Cristina Kirchner's decision to bring a daylight savings system back to Argentina means the country
is now only two hours behind Greenwich [.
As if to prove that he can put together quite a handy team without including the Olympic-bound
Lionel Messi, Juan Román Riquelme, Sergio Agüero et al, Alfio Basile has named the
Argentina squad to face Belarus in a friendly in Minsk, two weeks from today (Weds). There are a
couple of surprises in the all-Europe [.
Mauro Martín, the current capo of Boca Juniors' barra brava, La Doce, was sentenced on Tuesday
to twenty days in jail for his part in a fight between his own barra and that of Vélez
Sársfield during Boca's 3-2 away win over the Liniers side on the 23rd April 2006.
Martín's full sentence includes twenty days in [.
With the Clausura effectively over before the final weekend for Estudiantes and Boca Juniors as
well as newly-crowned champions River Plate, the summer transfer market has already begun. River
boss Diego Simeone wants to bring in a new goalkeeper, and has set his sights on Atlético de
Madrid's Leo Franco, whilst Boca and Estudiantes are [.
The publication of this editorial got pushed back by a few days because I was ill earlier in the
week not not up to spending too much time typing, but it's coincided nicely with the Arab new year.
We've got a few readers in that part of the world, so happy new year to all [...]
Either the world's going a little bit mad, or Pedro Pompilio is beginning to lose touch with
reality a tad. The identities of two players Boca Juniors may currently be considering for the
transfer market have been revealed, and they make for surprising reading. Both were born in South
America, but that's about the least surprising [.
The schedule for the 2008-2009 season of the Argentine Primera Division has been released. River
will begin the Torneo Apertura 2008 in Santa Fe, where they will face Colon. Many difficult matches
will follow this one, but the one that everyone is curious about (the Superclasico) will be played
on the 10th round (October 19th) in the Monumental.

I've had at least 3 conversations this week about how there were no Americans playing in the UEFA
Champions League. So while debating the positives of Villarreal leaving Young Jozy off of their CL
roster (and I really think there are some) I totally spaced on the fact that in addition to Gooch
and Timmy Howard, Carlos Bocanegra is playing in the UEFA Cup.
Hopefully all HEGS readers had a good few days off for Christmas (those who had days off for it, at
least). After a couple of days away from the keyboard myself (you only need a mouse to play
Football Manager), I hope I've now got things straight enough to look back on what was a [...]
French club Rennes have signed American defender Carlos Bocanegra on a free transfer after he was
released by Fulham last month.
Boca's new stomping grounds...
HEGS is back, but it feels, I must say, a bit like I hadn't really been away. When I left for
Havana, Sergio Batista had named Lionel Messi in the squad for the Olympic Football Tournament, and
Barcelona president Joan Laporta was making some decidedly 'we'll have to see about that'-type
noises. The novel seems [.
The initial draw for the 2008 Copa Sudamericana was made at the AFA headquarters on Tuesday. Not all the qualifiers are known yet, but so far we do know that River Plate, Boca Juniors (both invited rather than needing to qualify), Arsenal de Sarandí (as defending champions), San Lorenzo and Estudiantes (qualified via the league) will [.

the dog is thinking: "@#$% this. Go River Plate!" (AP Photo by Natacha Pisarenko)
With FIFA's laying of the smackdown on all teams preventing their under 23 stars to leave club
competition for the Olympics, you can pretty much kiss a chance at seeing Messi
for a second time this year goodbye.
Ah, what a blow to this Argie.
Reaction has been an overall disappointment (unless you live in Argentina).
Ariel Ortega agreed with the River Plate board on Tuesday to go out on loan for a season to Mendoza
club Independiente Rivadavia, of Primera B Nacional. Ortega turned down the chance to move to the
United Arab Emirates to play a season for Al Mir Sports due to the distance from his family and

The goals from the second weekend of Torneo Apertura action are online now (with Newell's vs. Boca
to follow on Wednesday night), and can be viewed through the TN sportsblog by clicking here. Read
on, as usual, for the running order of this video clip and for my personal favourite strikes of the
weekend, taken [.
The third weekend is already upon us, with Boca returning to league action after their holiday in
Catalunya by hosting Lanús. The champions are away to Banfield on Saturday, whilst it's an
all-Santa Fe Province clash between Rosario Central and Colón which kicks the weekend off.
Estudiantes, having finally won a match on Wednesday night [.
This is just a random stream of consciousness, so bear with me.
I was just thinking that English nat'l team and Bradley's boys appear to have quite a bit in
common. Though, yes I know, England is way better.
- Neither can really live up to its fans expectations.
- Neither can create anything offensively and rely on set pieces to get points.
Betis defender Luciano Monzón is one of the few youngsters that has made a quick impact as
soon as he arrived in Europe. His ability to make a name for himself with Real Betis earned
him his first-ever callup to the Argentine national team. The former "Boca Baby" has seen
2008 be very [...]
Ramón Cabrero has a little over two weeks remaining to get his charges ready for their first taste
of Copa Libertadores action, but insisted on Monday that Lanús are up to the challenge of going
head-to-head with some of South America's biggest clubs. First, of course, they've got to get past
Ecuadorian side Olmedo.
Following their away goals defeat to LDU Quito in the Copa Libertadores semi-final, and their dreadful campaign in domestic competition in Mexico, Club América are after a manager, and former River Plate, San Lorenzo and... um... Oxford United boss Ramón Díaz looks set to take charge with Miguel Angel Russo likely to replace him in Boedo [.
Gareth Barry's Disgruntled P.R. Rep Tells All "When your name is a byword for bravery Here's
the thing you can't go crying 'Slavery!' Without putting the skids On the love of the kids At a
club that thinks that stuff's unsavoury." The Unvarnished Truth Ronaldinho is bound for
Reggina, PSG, Nice, Raith, Fiorentina, Dortmund, Derby, Brno, Boca, SC Znojmo, Sagan Tosu, Perth,
Bath or Messina.
Continuing the history series which began with a nostalgic look at the 1978 World Cup win, I wanted
to write something for the second installment which looked at a player forgotten by many today.
Those who read my recent article looking back on the 1991 Apertura in UK magazine When Saturday
Comes will recognise the [.

Only nine matches this weekend, due to Boca travelling to Spain to take part in Barcelona's Copa
Joan Gamper (they lost 3-1, after leading); the Xeneize will travel to Newell's on Wednesday
evening. Champions River got their first win of the campaign, as did Independiente. Argentinos
tonked Vélez at home, and Colón did likewise to [.

when two teenagers with their souped up cars look at each other with the greatest of intent, they
do their best to make their whip as shiny and as lustrous as possible.
Lionel Messi's training with Barcelona during the week has gone well, and he's included in Frank
Rijkaard's squad for Sunday's Spanish First Division match against Racing de Santander. In perhaps
the only Argentine-player-related story that could have eclipsed that one, the Torneo de Verano
will see a big moment for Boca Juniors later on Saturday: [.
Julio Falcioni is reported to be very close to taking over as Racing's new manager, before stand-in
Claudio Cristofanelli has even had a chance to manage a first-team game. Elsewhere, Boca Juniors
manager Carlos Ischia has an interesting plan to bring back Juan Román Riquelme from injury
without upsetting the in-form Leandro Gracián - play [.
HEGS has been updated only sporadically whilst I've been away so far, so since it's a quiet final
night in Berlin for me, a quick rundown of the headlines we've missed over the last week is in
order. Very briefly, then... 1. San Lorenzo crashed heavily away to Cruzeiro in the Copa
Libertadores last Thursday.
Estudiantes got over a huge hurdle at home as they beat an inspired Boca side. Although their
stories in the Copa Libertadores went in opposite directions, the Xeneizes were poised to be strong
on both fronts. Meanwhile Estudiantes wanted to continue their winning ways as the La Plata
derby nears.
The Good It's been good for Brazilian side Fluminense and Ecuadorian side LDU Quito as they make
the Copa Libertadores Final for the first time in each of their club's history. Fluminense came
from behind to beat defending champions Boca Juniors while LDU Quito beat Mexican side America to
become the first team from Ecuador to [.
JPA did an ESPN Deportes chat, which I've translated here. One notable aspect was not a single
question concerned his current team. Red Bull New York.
JPA: Hi everyone, I'm happy to be here to chat, so let's get to the questions.
Jesus: Do you think that Colombia has the roster to be able to qualify for the 2010 World Cup?
River Plate may have just won the title after a long wait but manager Diego Simeone already knows
he's still got to find a few missing pieces in the jigsaw to get the side playing the way he'd
like. One very important piece he already had is now out of the equation, though: his passport

Yes, it's Monday again, and that must mean it's time to run through the results from the first
weekend of the 2008 Torneo Apertura. Champions River Plate avoided defeat in the stadium known as
'The Elephants' Graveyard' thanks to a second half equaliser from their new Uruguayan starlet, Boca
gave Gimnasia de Jujuy a twonking [.
