Mike Freitag, one of the most well-respected coaches in American soccer, has joined the
University of Denver men's soccer staff, head coach Bobby Muuss announced today.
"Coach Freitag and the experiences he has had as a coach instantly make the University of Denver
men's soccer program better," Muuss said.
The University of Denver men's soccer team was ranked 19th in the nation by Goal.com and 29th by
College Soccer News in their preseason polls.
"It's nice to be recognized nationally, as our program gains more and more respect," head coach
Bobby Muuss said. "However, this is a tribute to last year's team and its successes.
The University of Denver men's soccer team will host College Soccer Saturday, featuring the
Pioneers, Tulsa, New Mexico and Creighton, all of which played in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, at the
University of Denver Soccer Stadium on April 9.
DU will take on Tulsa under the lights at 7 p.m. The Pioneers won the 2010 Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they were edged 1-0 by
UC Santa Barbara in double overtime during the first round.
The University of Denver men's soccer team's spring schedule includes 2011 NCAA Tournament
participant Tulsa at home, as well as road games against Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids and
MPSF foe New Mexico, head coach Bobby Muuss announced.
"With so much of our team returning, we wanted to put together a very challenging spring
schedule, and I believe what we were able to put together will really benefit our program in our
continued development," Muuss said.
University of Denver men's soccer sophomore defender Drew Beckie was among the Canadian Men's
Olympic Team players who took on CD Chivas USA on Tuesday.
Beckie was called in for the training camp in Los Angeles and Oxnard, Calif., which runs from
Feb. 23 through Friday.
"We are thrilled that Drew has been given this opportunity," DU head coach Bobby Muuss said.
The 2011 University of Denver men's soccer team will host eight teams, including Creighton and
New Mexico, and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at CIBER Field at the University
of Denver Soccer Stadium, head coach Bobby Muuss announced on Monday.
The Pioneers, who won the MPSF Tournament title last season, will play eight games against teams
that advanced to the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
The University of Denver men's soccer team added two players to its roster for the 2011 season,
coach Bobby Muuss announced Friday.
UC Santa Barbara transfer Joe Eubanks (Denver, Colo.) and four-time Nevada state champion
Christian Volesky (Henderson, Nev.) join a DU freshman class that includes two of the College
Soccer News Top 150 recruits, a Jamaican U-17 National Team member and state players of the year
from Kentucky, Colorado and Wyoming.
The 19th ranked University of Denver men's soccer team received another preseason recognition on
Monday, this time on an individual level.
Senior midfielder Jarod Stigall was listed at No. 30 in Top Drawer Soccer's Preseason Top 100
Upperclassman list.
"This is a nice honor for Jarod, as well as his teammates that have helped him along the way,"
head coach Bobby Muuss said.
The No. 19 University of Denver men's soccer team was edged 1-0 to No. 6 Creighton in the season
opener at CIBER Field on Saturday night.
"I think Creighton is a legitimate national championship contender, and I think our guys came
out here and battled them, playing our brand of soccer," head coach Bobby Muuss said.
After the Pioneers raced out to an early one goal lead, Cal got a hat trick from senior forward
Katie Benz to send the Bears past DU 4-2.
Forward Kristen Hamilton scored on a pass from forward Kaitlin Bast and fired past diving Cal
goalkeeper Emily Kruger.
Cal's Benz would start the second half just as quickly as Hamilton started the first, scoring in
the 47th minute to tie the score at 1-1.
DU scored twice in the second half to tie No. 11 Notre Dame 2-2 on a rainy Friday evening at
Notre Dame's Alumni Stadium.
"Our group showed a lot of character to come back from two down against a quality team in Notre
Dame," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "Like Creighton, they are an opponent that can certainly be
playing the last weekend of the season.
University of Denver midfielder Brian Hoyt scored both Pioneers goals, but the College of
Charleston put three tallies on the scoreboard to defeat the Pioneers 3-2 at CIBER Field at the
University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
"I didn't think we played particularly well in any portion of the game, but I guess we were good
enough to get two back," said head coach Bobby Muuss.
