I know I've been a bit light lately in my posting. Hopefully this week will make up for that.
The last couple days I've put together a list of the ol' sports writer staple, a hot or not list.
Some folks may love it while others may not, whatever. I'm a list guy so I like writing them.
Anyways we are a month into the season now with most clubs having four games under their belts
(only one has two Columbus).
Andy Najar's 54th minute volley was enough for D.C. United to gain a valuable road point in their
1-1 draw in San Jose

It's official. Despite being fifth on the goal list with 14, fourth on the assist list with 11,
fifth on the shots list with 90, first on the shots on goal list with 48, 20th on the game-winning
goals list with three, and fifth on the game-winning assists list with four, Sebastien Le Toux is
not one of the three MVP finalists.

Goal.com has a head to head preview of Saturday's Union's match against Houston. Their
prediction: the Union gets loss number six. My prediction: Flyers win. You can read the PSP preview
here.
The Daily News looks at rumors that the Union is pursuing Fabio Cannavaro. Sources at the Union
also tell the paper that signing MLS journeyman Carlos Ruiz is "in the works.
Not champions yet.
On Thursday, July 22 the Los Angeles Galaxy faced a slowly improving San Jose Earthquake squad
at home in the friendly confines of the Home Depot Center. On paper, this should have been three
points for the home team and a set-back for the team from the Bay Area. In practice, a Galaxy
defense once again missing Gregg Berhalter, gave the Quakes two deadly looks on
goal that they took advantage of them, leaving the Galaxy to chase the game not once but twice.
Union
MLSsoccer.com has given mid-season grades for the Union, rightly concluding they have looked
better than their record shows. Top grades (A-) to the forwards, lowest (C+) to the midfield, with
two B-'s to round things out. Just to be fair, I would give the fans and the new stadium an A+. How
would you grade the season so far?
Philadelphia native and San Jose Earthquakes all-star midfielder Bobby Convey sat in for this
week's KYW podcast with PSP's Dan Walsh and KYW's Greg Orlandini. In the interview, Convey
discusses:
- personal differences with his former D.C. United manager, Peter Nowak, that may have prevented
Convey from playing for Philadelphia Union;
- his long comeback from the knee injury that prematurely ended his playing stint with Reading in
the English leagues;
- his excellent form in Major League Soccer this year;
- the difficulties faced by Philadelphia-area youth soccer players who aren't from wealthy
families;
- prospects for his return to the U.
Bobby Convey and the Earthquakes head into battle Saturday against the Thierry Henry Inc.
The New York Red Bulls take on the San Jose Earthquakes in a match-up that may not be as
one-sided as some people might think.
The Right Coasters may have galloped their way to first place in the East, but questions persist
about their midfield and prized recruit Theirry Henry hasn't been an automatic on the teams sheet
for the better part of a month.
Check out this article in the San Jose Mercury. I had been wondering why Bobby wasn't having more
of an impact upon his return to MLS. I think the question is should Convey go or should Frank
Yallop go?
LA forward Landon Donovan, following a one-goal, three assist effort against Seattle on
Saturday, and an assist on the lone goal against the Rapids on Wednesday, was named the MLS Player
of the Week for Week 7 by the North American Soccer Reporters on Monday.
The Galaxy kicked off the week on Wednesday with a game against the Colorado Rapids at Dick's
Sporting Goods Park.
Speculation about whether Chris Seitz will start in goal on Saturday continues.
Fred, Moreno and Orozco talk about what it means to play at home.
Union president Tom Viet and midfielder Andrew Jacobson were on WMGK's John DeBella show
yesterday. "They talked about already being hated for being Philly, their new stadium which is set
to open soon and their game this Saturday against the dreaded FC Dallas.

Saturday's goal by Shea Salinas has been named MLS Goal of the Week. 61% voted for the
undeniably world-class effort.

For a couple weeks now I've held off on reveling my end of the year awards. I mainly wanted to
see the season end and the playoffs begin before I wrote this all out. Plus I honestly had no idea
how I wanted to present this. But on Election Day it just feels right to tell you all how I voted
in this year's MLS Awards.

The Philadelphia Union have confirmed what John Hackworth revealed on the KYW Philly Soccer Show
podcast, recorded Monday night and released Tuesday on the PSP: Danny Mwanga retains his Generation
Adidas status, thus freeing up a spot on the Union's protected list.

Nearly halfway through the MLS season, Philadelphia Union manager Peter Nowak is still
tinkering.
Nowak has deployed 10 different lineups in 12 regular season games. All three lines –
defenders, midfielders, forwards – have changed. He only repeated lineups after the Union's first
two wins and then tweaked them again after they failed to produce consecutive victories.

Philadelphia Union kick off a four-game home stretch on Saturday as Philly native Bobby Convey
and the San Jose Earthquakes come to town.
San Jose (5-4-4) has been playing solid soccer thanks to Convey's return to form and the
emergence of forward Chris Wondolowski and rookie center back Ike Opara.

FC Delco Hammerheads will play Ohio's Crew Juniors today in the last game before the U-19 2010
US Youth Soccer National Championship on Saturday. The Hammerheads have won both of their previous
two matches in the Championship while Crew Juniors have won one and tied one. Regardless of the
outcome of today's match, because the third place team has only one point, both the Hammerheads and
the Crew will appear in the Final.
Bobby Convey against Brazil
Sacha Klejstan, Justin Mapp, Bobby Convey, Jermaine Jones, and Charlie Davies all missed out on
playing for the US at the 2010 World Cup earlier this summer. Each of them is talented, and some
are obviously in another class. However, all of them have the talent to help the US during the next
World Cup qualifying cycle.
You don't have to be a "area youth soccer aficionado" to care
Buried at the end of a piece in the Daily News on Monday about the Union's draw with the
Revolution was a mention about FC Delco's loss to the Crew Juniors—an MLS academy team— in the
U–19 Youth Soccer National Championship that really got my goat.
Steve Coppell, a TF3 favorite for his intellectual approach to football, and his development of
USA international Bobby Convey, has quit Bristol City and has retired from football management.
"It is with the deepest regret that I confirm my departure from Bristol City," Coppell said in
his statement.

Two teams fighting for a playoff spot face off Wednesday night as Philadelphia Union pays a
visit to the San Jose Earthquakes.
San Jose (9-7-6) sits in eighth place in the overall table but has more games to play than its
competitors as well as the league's easiest remaining schedule, at least on paper.

One team tonight still has a tiny bit of hope while the other is starting to hit their stride at
the right time this year. The Philadelphia Union comes into San Jose tonight to meet the Quakes in
a pivotal midweek matchup.

Danny Mwanga on not being named Rookie of the Year: "I'm going to prove to people that maybe I

The local Ivy League derby between Princeton and Penn is always a big thing. This Saturday, it

How about Bobby Convey? Two goals and an assist ranks up there with potential career games.

Just the thought of two western conference clubs playing for the eastern conference final still
makes me giggle. Geography aside this one could be a fun game to watch. Yes they are technically
the lowest two seeds left in the playoffs but that won't mean they fail at making this one worth
watching.
You can talk all you like about the friendly where a good number of US regulars were thoroughly
dominated by a Brazilian B-Team a month after the World Cup. You can talk about glass half-full
results featuring new tactics against Poland and Colombia until you are blue in the face. I know at
least one of our writers did, and oddly enough, he took time off from his general cynicism to (sort
of) praise Bob Bradley for experimenting.
