I 'like' this all day long. Amazing improvisation by the small garden vegetable. It is also our
undisputed Goal of the Weekend, beating fine efforts by Leighton Baines and Samir Nasri, among
others.
As was pointed out on Match of the Day 2 (tuck your shirt in, Lawro, you're not at home), the
backwards header is not new in football Uwe Seeler scored with a similar effort for the West
Germans against England at the 1970 World Cup; the game in which England led 2-0 then blew it in
spectacular fashion, no thanks to the substitution of Bobby Charlton and the absence of Gordon
Banks.
It's often said that England considers itself special in the world of football, as the founders
of the organised game. For once, on October 23rd 1963, this attitude was actually appropriate, as
England celebrated the centenary of the Football Association (the world's first, of course) by
taking on a team organised by FIFA representing the rest of the world.
We have a little break from the usual this morning, with a downloadable, four-part audio
cassette produced by the BBC in the early 1990s, just before the death of Sir Matt Busby, which
tells the story of Manchester United Football Club through the prism of the involvement of the man
that took a run of the mill First Division club and made them the champions of Europe and one of
the biggest club sides in the world.
With the second coming of the Strikers to South Florida in 2011, we here at FMB (Football in Miami
and Beyond) think it's a good idea to educate the fans that have no idea of the history behind the
name.
We thank Robert Scorca for taking the time to do this project.
The original 'History of the Ft Lauderdale Strikers' was published on www.
The latest in our classic programme cover series takes us back to a very unusual game, Bobby
Charlton's final ever match and his only appearance for Shrewsbury Town in a specially arranged
friendly against Zambia at their home ground of the time, Gay Meadow. The home team apparently won
4-0; it's unclear exactly why Charlton appeared for Shrewsbury, though he did do his national
service in the area.
Post-African Cup of Nations 2010 coverage we are working on a couple of things behind the scenes on
Just Football, hence the brief dip in posting regularity over the past week or so. While we
experience this break from our regular scheduled programming here are a couple of links to articles
I've found interesting lately:
Where else to start but Manchester United's impressive 3-2 win over AC Milan at the San Siro, which
hands them a desirable advantage heading into the 2nd leg of their Champions League round of 16
knockout clash.
When Sir Alex Ferguson's troops step out at Old Trafford on Wednesday night the memories of 1969
will come flooding back for United legend Denis Law and for anyone who was there on a dramatic
night...

The World Cup usually boasts the greatest players in the world, but occasionally, circumstances
conspire to keep some of the world's greatest from strutting their stuff on the biggest stage. It
might seem like an unforgivable crime against football, but here is part one of the best players
who never played in the World Cup.
A notable and very encouraging statistic that all England fans can take pride in is the goal
tally that Capello's team notched up while qualifying from Group 6. In fact, the path to South
Africa's Group C was a real goalfest. In the 10 games that they played England slotted in 34 goals
and that was more than any other European team in the competition.
James indicates where in the pecking order he thinks he is
So after the endless speculation in the comments here at the England world Cup Blog, I can reveal
to you the actual squad numbers the players will wear out in South Africa. The most interesting
ones are of course the ones where we aren't sure who is going to start David James has been handed
the Number 1 shirt, which would suggest he is Fabio's first choice goalkeeper, although he has
previously said he won't tell the players untill the day before the USA match.
By Alison Dennehy, writing from England
England's World Cup squad numbers:
1 David James, 2 Glen Johnson, 3 Ashley
Cole, 4 Steven Gerrard, 5 Rio Ferdinand,
6John Terry, 7 Aaron Lennon, 8 Frank
Lampard, 9 Peter Crouch, 10 Wayne Rooney,
11Joe Cole, 12 Robert Green, 13 Stephen
Warnock, 14 Gareth Barry, 15 Matthew
Upson,16 James Milner, 17 Shaun Wright-Phillips, 18
Jamie Carragher, 19 Jermain Defoe, 20Ledley King,
21 Emile Heskey, 22 Michael Carrick, 23 Joe
Hart.
Four years of anticipation and expectations are now only hours away. Some of football's greatest
stars are assembled in South Africa preparing to put on "The Greatest Show On Earth" but a number

Paul Scholes The Man Who Would be King is a post from: Just Football
This summer, one of the biggest stories in football involved the English national team and
their, to put it politely, sub-standard performance at the World Cup. Spluttering through the group
stages after a series of so-so results, England's shortcomings were then truly laid bare when a
fresh, dynamic Germany tore England apart, winning 4-1.
In the eyes of most football fans, Manchester United's Premier League visit to Fulham on Sunday is
by no means a blockbuster yet there was a time 52 years ago when two meetings between the clubs
had...

This week The FIFA inspection committee responsible for producing the report on all the possible
host countries for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups visits England. The committee will be touring
London, Manchester, Sunderland and Newcastle, inspecting stadia, looking at infrastructure, and
getting charmed by David Beckham, Fabio Capello and Bobby Charlton.
Bobby Charlton and the Manchester United team star in a new television commercial for Turkish
Airlines.
Typically we don't run commercials on this site, but this is definitely a well produced and
imaginative ad that features the entire team such as Edwin van der Sar, Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra,
John O'Shea, the da Silva twins, Paul Scholes and others.
To say that apart from his Manchester United fans, veteran Gary Neville is not the best loved
footballer in England will be a gross understatement. Despite that, he will go down in history as
an Old...

PRAGUE — Soccer's 2012 European Championship could be played using an experimental system of five
match officials. The Union of European Football Associations decided Friday to ask again for
permission from FIFA's International Football Association Board, the sport's rules-making panel.
The IFAB limited five-referee trials to club soccer when it met in July.
MANCHESTER, England Sir Alex Ferguson has taken time out from match preparations to welcome the
Chilean miners to a Manchester United training session. A group of 26 of the 33 rescued miners
visited the club's Carrington training ground ahead of the Premier League match against Arsenal.

England, as you may have heard, will play the United States at the 2010 FIFA World Cup on June
12th of this year. This series will look at past encounters between the two; and no, we're not
starting in 1950. Instead, we will look at a hyped-up contest that took place between the two
teams, on May 29th 1959.
Robert Scorca is our in-residence South Florida historian. He is a regular contributor to our site
as well as to publications such as Miami Soccer Fan.

The history of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers goes back before Fort Lauderdale. The team even goes
back before the North American Soccer League.
He hurtles down the muddy left touchline, shoulders square on, head down, shorts hitched up,
plain white socks a blur, heavy brown lace-up football at his feet as he bursts past floundering
defenders to the by-line before launching a cross into the path of an on-rushing team-mate. It
could be to Bobby Charlton for a net-ripping thunderbolt, or for gaunt-faced Dennis Viollet to
ghost onto and despatch into the far corner with a shimmy of the hips, or perhaps golden-haired
Albert Quixall will silence the critics again with a volley of unstoppable power.
With the World Cup less than 6 months away, we have decided to start the build up early doors
with an A to Z list of our favorite players who set the World Cup alight. Some are recent stars,
some are relics from the days of black and white TV but all were mustard. The thing is, each week
we will be using just stars whose surname was that week's letter, eg: this week it is letter C
which gives us Carlos, Cruyff, Cannavaro etc etc.
Chester City Football Club were wound up this week, with their 125-year existence ending for the
sake of a tax bill. Portsmouth might have gained headlines for becoming the first Premier League
club to enter administration but they somehow stagger on with debts of £60m, while the club four
divisions below Pompey are now defunct thanks in part to the Blue Square Premier outfit owing HM
Revenue & Customs a, by comparison, paltry £26,125.
As we all look forward to this year's World Cup there is a natural tendency to glance backwards at
the same time to admire the history of the tournament. With the exception of the final itself, the
semis are amongst the most eagerly awaited matches. Let's look at some classic World Cup
semi-finals and see if we can choose the best.
It says everything about Paul Scholes that he has crept unnoticed into Manchester United's all time
goalscorers Top 10 with his dramatic injury time winner against Manchester City on Saturday.

Before I start typing this, and before you start reading, I should 'fess up that I'm an England
fan. Hopefully I'm not too biased and can write a post about the World Cup history of England in an
objective manner. Even when discussing the events of 1966 and 1986.
2006 was a disaster for England's much vaunted strikers in so many ways it was depressing. It
was clearly Sven Goran-Eriksson's nadir as the England supremo as his eccentric choices left
England woefully short of options. Michael Owen was so off the pace as to be redundant and his
World Cup collapse when he ruptured his cruciate ligament against Sweden.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup kicks off in six weeks today, close enough that you can start to
hear the vuvuzelas and smell the biltong. Continuing his preview of this summer (winter)'s
events, Dotmund has now reached Group C, where he will do his best to cover the
large three lions tattoo on his face and behave in the sort of balanced way we like here at
Twohundredpercent.
If you're a football fan and you struggle to stomach the thought of a Conservative Government in
the UK, look away now. The stats on England's World Cup record under Conservative governments are
dire.
1930 – Labour Government led Ramsey McDonald, soon-to-be head of Conservative-dominated National
Government.

Camp Drog says:
"Ooh, it's a f**king disgrace!"
Incredibly, I had a chance to meet the legendary Geoff Hurst this week, and pose him some
questions. We love interviews here at the England World Cup Blog even the fake ones but this one
was quite real. I was initally a bit nervous how many times do you get to meet a man whose played
in a World Cup Final, let alone won one?
