So the day has arrived. Chelsea's first game since the shock departure of Jose Mourinho earlier
this week. And what a game to play to try to restore some order and stability into a football club
that has been rocked to its foundations.
There are some sensational newspapers headlines in England today. Ranging from Turncoat Terry to
Abramovich preparing to give Grant £100m to try and get Kaka and Ronaldinho into the Blue of
Chelsea when the January transfer window opens.

I'm not going to write too detailed a preview of the Schalke 04 match at the Arena AufSchalke,
Gelsenkirchen, Germany Tuesday night. For a very detailed analysis of the game, please go here.
What I will say is that this match is about as must-win a game as Valencia has had in a
while.
They looked poor against inferior competition this weekend.
I'm keeping this short and sweet as we're in the middle of a federal holiday here in the United
States. It's a rare day I get off, so I'm leaving to enjoy the sun and fun.
Because of the holiday and because they refused to show the Almeria-Valencia game in the States,
I wasn't able to watch. According to the comments left on the blog and various reports around the
'Net, I should be glad I didn't.
The Academy travelled to Aston Villa on Saturday morning and like the first team a couple of
weeks ago, were beaten. The game ended 2-1 to Villa. Read all about it here.
The reserves were in action last night at their new home Griffin Park, home of Brentford FC and
in front of a fair sized crowd drew with Tottenham 1-1. Read all about it here.
Courtesy of 101greatgoals.com USA 2 - Brazil 4 (International friendly, September 9, 2007)
Bocanegra put the Americans ahead off a Landon Donovan corner kick, but Brazil tied it with an
own-goal off defender Onyewu following a shot by Kaka. Brazil went ahead when Lucio headed
Ronaldinho's corner. Dempsey then tied the score for the before Ronaldinho [.
Australia 0 - Argentina 1 (International friendly, September 11, 2007) (Longer highlights here.)
Martin Demichelis scored in the 49th minute when he found himself unmarked in the goalmouth and
headed home a looping free-kick from Lionel Messi.
The day started off with a one minute appreciation for Ian Porterfield who died earlier in the
week. Porterfield was Chelsea coach under Bobby Campbell when Chelsea won promotion back to the top
flight in 1989 and for 20 months he was Chelsea manager when Chelsea and Campbell departed
company.
As for the game I am not going to say that Blackburn came to park the bus, but they certainly
set their stall out not to get beaten.
. . . . WHO WOULDA GUESSED?!?! . . . .
First off, People Magazine (in espanol) has A RED BULL as one of the 10 SEXIEST MEN in AMERICAN
in its newest magazine. CHECK IT OUT.
Simultaneously, they are breaking down the possible end of year award winners on MLSNET (MVP,
rookie of the year, etc.).
And of course, the only RBNY representative in BOTH catagories and currently trailing Luciano
Emilio for league MVP?
Daryl from The Offside eluded after Sheva's game against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday that Sheva
should pack his bags and move on. I know there are sites on the Internet that want Sheva back at AC
Milan, the club that Roman Abramovich paid £30m for Sheva's services 14 months ago.
As Daryl also pointed out and the story maybe more true than false, that Sheva was an Abramovich
signing more than a Mourinho signing.
Since this was already 3 days ago, here are just some late thoughts from your fractured fingered
blogging wonder kind :
Lets get the decaying news out of the way first. In a last minute transfer before the 'window'
closed, Lassana Di....ar......ra left Chelsea for the new ski, (Chelski is old hat now) so let's
welcome Arseski. Diarra was a firm fans favourite and with no disrespect to the lad he has gone on
and increased Wenger's French foreign legion so weclome Frenchnal and Arseski - No it won't kick
off - there will only be one ski and thats Chelski, but there will only be one Frenchnal!
Who here has confidence in the current leadership at Valencia? Raise your hands ... where are
you?
Spanish birdcage liner MARCA had a great way of emphasising every Real Madrid loss back
in the Galactico days.
CRISIS!, the headline would scream! People would buy the gossip rag to read about the
most recent loss, agonize over the startling way this array of talent could screw it up week in,
week out.
Problem is, they didn't really lose all that often.
Happy days as Premiership action returns this weekend and Chelsea have a chance to lay the ghost
of the disappointing defeat at Villa a couple of weeks ago with a home game against Blackburn
Rovers and former Chelsea legend, Mark Hughes who is Rovers manager.
Rovers are on an unbeaten 14 match domestic run and the last team to beat Rovers.
So what do you think I should be writing about today?
The three points we 'earned' at the hands of Valladolid? The graceful, stylish play our club is
showing? The tacticul genius of our coach, Quique Sanchez Flores?
I might be overreacting here. But this game is testament to what I and other readers here have
been saying: Quique is not the man for this team.
The UK press today have been all over The Special One about his eggs anaolgy in yesterday's
Champions League pre-match press conference. You can guess the adjectives!!!
'Cracked, Cracking Up, Scrambled, Eggstactly, Fried, Boiled etc etc etc etc.'
If you are a Jose lover you could have put your mortgage on The Special One coming out with such
a statement that would guarantee the 'hacks' from the press corp feverishly shorthanding, recording
and hanging on to every word that The Special One speaks!
Fulham are the visitors to Stamford Bridge this afternoon in the first Premiership game since
Jose Mourinho left the club and the match is new coach Avram Grant's first home game in charge. I
believe there is still lots of anger and resentment at the way Jose departed and it will be
interesting to see how the fans react for the first time in force today.
Manchester United 0 - Coventry 2 (League Cup, September 26, 2007) Coventry, backed by 11,000 fans,
went ahead when Michael Mifsud turned in Michael Doyle's cross. And Mifsud killed off United,
firing high into the net after Jay Tabb fashioned an opening. Hull 0 - Chelsea 4 (League Cup,
September 26, 2007) Hull managed [...]
Credit to Villa, credit to Zat Knight who last week scored an own goal whilst playing for Fulham
and being a Holte End boy scores the opener for Villa this afternoon two minutes into the second
half on his debut.
Credit to Martin O'Neill who continued to encourage his Villa youngsters and who was rewarded
with a second goal minutes from full time from Agbonlahor after Chelsea's new signing Belletti was
'skinned' for the first time by another of O'Neill's youngsters Luke Moore.
Some advice. Never take a few days off from writing stuff before the International break
takes-over and in the two week break for Euro 2008 qualifiers, there ain't a lot of stuff that you
can write about and thats my excuse.... wink wink!!!
Seriously after a break from work I have returned today from three days away on business and I
am STILL LOOKING FOR THAT SPONSOR that will give me a wireless internet PC so I can keep this blog
up-to-date 24/7, 365 days a year!
But then again the video below has nothing to do with chocolate either.... and a gorilla... and
a Phil Collins song.. but ain't the timing of the hi-hat spot on?
Turn your speakers full on and enjoy!!!
This video is taking the UK by storm... but what the hell.
It is International break and Thank God we get back to normality at the weekend when the
Premiership returns, well at least until October when the Premiership STOPS again for two weeks for
another round of Euro Qualifiers.
It's quite simple, really.
Fire Quique Sanchez Flores.
Hire 'The Special One', Jose Mourinho.
I can end the blog post there, but I'll go on.
Unless you've been living in a cave the past few hours, I'm sure you're aware Jose Mourinho quit
his post as gaffer at Chelsea.
I didn't watch the Champions League encounter between our beloved (Valencia, not Mourinho) and
Schalke 04, but I read the commentary online.
About this time last week I was bemoaning the 0-0 draw against Blackburn and how so WRONG WRONG
WRONG the assistant Referee Peter Kirkup was in disallowing a perfectly good goal from Salomon
Kalou for offside.
My how a week can change. Tuesday, Chelsea was all over Norway's Rosenborg in the Champions
League but only drew 1-1 and 24 hours later, The Special One, Jose Mourinho left Chelsea by 'mutual
consent.
I admit to not being the most consistent blogger on the Offside.
For one, I have a day job.
Two, I have other things that take up my time, like living, eating and watching football.
Unfortunately, this weekend was one of those where life (and the occasional meal) intervened and
didn't allow me to watch football. Hence, I wasn't able to watch the Valencia match.
I lived in Valencia for some time.
For those who haven't been, it's a wonderful place, full of energy, an emerging cultural center
packed with wonderful architecture.
It's a city known for many things.
Oranges.
Nice beaches.
Paella.
Great weather.
The aquarium.
One other thing it's famous for around the world is its entertaining nightlife.
Its been almost SEVEN days since Jose left, and it feels like a lifetime. I still can't get my
head around WHY Chelsea and Jose parted the way they did!!! To me the most appropriate time to part
company should have been at the end of last season, especially with all the press speculation from
January that Jose was 'on his bike.'
I watched a programme last night with two 'respected' sports journalists and they said they are
as 'gobsmacked' as the fans as to why Jose left and they are in 'the know.
At the moment Chelsea fans who are still in shock over Jose's departure and the very quick
appointment of Avram Grant shouldn't go too mad about the win at Hull City last night. I mean no
disrespect to Hull City and their fans, I am past the days of 'slagging off' other teams nowadays,
unless that team plays in the red-half of Liverpool.
But Hull City sit at the extreme lower end of the Championship and they did suffer a 'shock' 1-0
defeat at Sheff Wed on Saturday, so the game last night and the scoreline suggested where the power
and who the power team was.
Looks like our mini-crisis has passed.
Maybe Franky, the poster from Chicago had it right all along.
Valencia looked good again yesterday, defeating Getafe 2-1 at the Mestalla.
But before we go crowning our boys World Heavyweight Champions, let's see who we've beaten:
- Real Betis, 18th in the league with 2 points from 5 games.
I haven't had much to say the past few days. I've been consumed by work and other matters and
didn't feel a need to continue my whine-fest over Quique Sanchez Flores and his coaching
acumen.
Besides, Valencia haven't played in about two weeks, with internationals taking center
stage.
Regardless, Valencia's back on the field tomorrow for an important game at home against
newly-promoted Real Valladolid.
