Peter Nowak's decision to adjust his tactics (ironically enough in line with what most American
Soccer Spot readers suggested the other day) shows a tactical savvy and willingness to take chances
that many American coaches have quite frankly lacked in big competitions. Since the debacle of
Steve Sampson 3-6-1 in the 1998 World Cup, American managers have implemented a very basic tactical
structure one which is based on counter attacking and generally does not consider the strengths or
weaknesses of the upcoming opposition.
The USWNT defeated Canada 1-0 just a few hours ago, to become Peace Queen Cup champs for the second
time on a goal Angela Hucles! Hucles also won the golden ball as the tournament MVP! Here's the
write-up from USSoccer. The "Aunt Pia" part comes from a recent entry in the WNT Blog, in

First off, let me explain why I've been lacking on the actual content side of things lately.
I hate the off-season in all sports, but especially so in soccer. There is no other sport with a
"silly season" as public and pronounced as soccer. Papers and media outlets with little
else to talk about speculate on rumors about where players are headed, who managers want to sign,
where managers may take another job, and other similar topics.
It's not often you get to see enterprise work in the blogosphere. But the best out there I think is
Adam S. over at TiAS.
He has a great, in-depth profile on Clint Dempsey that I think all American soccer fans should
check out in their spare time.
Here's a particular enjoyable passage.
Yes, according to The Writer's Almanac, it's Arianna Huffington's birthday. Best wishes - and I'm
glad your journey landed you in the blogosphere! From the Huffington Post, here's a good piece my
Tom Matzzie about the ongoing lobbying from big oil and the Bush administration to allow
off-shore drilling.
This post is still necessary. Call me the cranky feminist of the soccer blogosphere, but things
like the comments on this post are fucking vile, and disrespectful of all women, let alone soccer
fans. If y'all wanna have a frat party, is the internets really the best place for it? Much harder
to tap a good keg online, I have to say.
Let's just say things out west aren't as good as they've been in years past. There's been plenty of
talk today all over the soccer blogosphere about how bad the western conference is in Major League
Soccer. Most of you already know my feelings on the western side of the ball compared to the
eastern [.
This has nothing to do with football, but anyway. Buzz. Buzz Bissinger. Those who frequent the
intellectual red light district known as the Blogosphere will know Buzz, the Certified Author who
went bananas on Bob Costa's HBO chat show, getting all up in the grill of Deadspin's Will Leitch,
accusing Leitch and his fellow bloggers of dragging the English language into the dirt, destroying
the elevated tone of American sporting discourse (?
As loyal STO readers may recall, a Houston Dynamo fan blog, Nutmegged, challenged STO and just
about everyone else in the MLS blogosphere to a friendly game of fantasy football (er, soccer) on
the web's premiere MLS fantasy site, MFLS.com. Well, twenty-four weeks are now complete, and I am
happy to report STO has been dominating [.
Out. Many connotations in that three-letter word; and not many of them are positive.
As far as football goes, out could be out of the Starting Eleven, or out of favor with the
manager, or in the case of a few, ahem, boys, a variation of out "outed" might not be good for the
marketing angle of one's career.
