The World Cup is less than six months away and organizers are running into a bit of a problem.
What happens if nobody shows up?
There are two reasons for the slow sales of World Cup tickets: safety and price
Sepp Blatter and FIFA insist that South Africa's violent crime rate is not a problem.
This is why I hate FIFA, bureaucrats, and politics in sports.
No, change that. I hate this man.
Jerome Champagne, a rival of Blatter within FIFA's ranks, was forced out after it was revealed he
challenged Blatter over his role as director of international relations.
Last month Marta was awarded the World Footballer of the Year trophy for the forth time. I have
said it before: Marta is a great player. But in ten years, only three women have been given this
award (Mia Hamm got it twice, & Birgit Prinz three times). Since 2001 (the year FIFA started
awarding this trophy to female players), 9 men received the award with Ronaldinho winning it twice.
Fifa has been triumphant in the announcement of 3D technology for broadcast media at this
summer's World Cup Finals in South Africa. Whilst the advancements in this area are hailed,
controvesy remains over the refusal of the governing body to countenance the introduction of
televisual aids to officials during matches.
The International footballing association Fifa today decided to do nothing about Thierry Henry's
handball against Ireland in the llay-offs to the World Cup. Fifa's statement reads: "Handling the
ball cannot be regarded as a serious infringement as stipulated in the Fifa disciplinary code.
There is no other legal text that would allow the committee to impose sanctions [.
Be honest, who really expected Thierry Henry to be punished for his handball exploits during the
now infamous France - Ireland World Cup 2010 play off? Only the most gullible fool with no idea of
how these things work could imagine football's governing body would open this can of worms again.
Blatter and Co.
I usually can't stand FIFA. They do my bonce in. Especially the President Sepp Blatter. He is a
twat.
For once though I think they have done the right thing by Thierry Henry.
Having said that I've often wondered whether FIFA's reaction would have been the same if an England
player did what Thierry did against Ireland.
Why did one of Sepp Blatter's key aides suddenly leave a top post at FIFA this week? Speculation
from journalists is rife. The true story, sadly, is hard to find.
FIFA's International Relations Director Jerome Champagne surprisingly departed from the world's
governing body this week, despite the fact that World Football Insider says Champagne had been
"believed to be positioning himself for a run for Blatter's job" next year.
The vuvuzela is making a noise again in South Africa – well people are making a noise about
the vuvuzela, notably the Shembe's or The Nazareth Baptist Church in KwaZulu-Natal.
Never a quite instrument, the vuvuzela or stadium horn has elicited a lot of noise, mostly from
European journalists during and after the Confederations Cup.
I just came across this tidbit in an interview with Sepp Blatter about FIFA's "Win with India in
India" program (initiated in 2007):
FIFA: Women's football is not very developed in India. Do you feel it is possible to
change that situation?
SP: Women's football has already managed to grow in countries where cultural,
religious or political factors might have made that appear unlikely.
The ED-209-looking monstrosity above is a robot developed by Castrol Japan that can take a free
kick, and can apparently strike a ball at speeds of 200 kilometres per hour or more. Which is very
very fast. Did you not see the video?
Castrol claim they were inspired to design and build the robot by Cristiano Ronaldo.
