TAMPA - The U.S. men's national team entered its game on Saturday night with an unblemished
record against Panama and in the all-time history of the group stages in the Gold Cup.
Both unbeaten records were broken at Raymond James Stadium after Panama held off a comeback
effort from the United States and defeated the Americans, 2-1, in a Group C match played in front
of 27,731 fans.
The US chased the game from the opening whistle....
The US falls to Panama in Game 2 of the Group Stage. It's the first loss ever for the States in
the Group Stage of the Gold Cup. The game was a fascinating tactical battle.
• Panama was excellent. The US failed to execute and seemed ill-prepared.
Ridge Mahoney of Soccer America offers three points of emphasis following the USA's 2-1 loss to
Panama in the Concacaf Gold Cup Saturday night in Tampa, Fla.:
Sluggish first half is costly. Again. After scoring in the 15th minute to take a
lead they held until the final whistle against Canada, the Americans said all the right things
about how important a strong start would be against Panama, which lost, 2-1, in the 2007 and 2009
Gold Cup quarterfinals after playing them to a 0-0 tie in the 2005 final.

Entering this 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the United States Men's National Team had it's issues.
Most figured they would ultimately be exposed in the late stages of the tournament. Instead, those
problems, coupled with a lackluster first-half performance, contributed to a 2-1 defeat to Panama
in Group C play.

The Canadian men's national team's Gold Cup began with a goal conceded due to shaky goalkeeping,
and it ended the same way.
Goalkeeper Milan Borjan couldn't control Blas Perez' rebound attempt on the goal line, and Luis
Tejada got the final touch to score in the waning moments of the clubs' Group C finale, which ended
in a 1-1 draw at Livestrong Sporting Park.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. men's national team will face Panama in the Gold Cup once again.
After playing to a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes, Panama defeated El Salvador, 5-3, on penalty
kicks in a crazy second game of Sunday night's quarterfinals doubleheader at RFK Stadium.
1. The lineup for tonight's match will be very similar to the one Bob Bradley fielded against
Jamaica. It will be the same 4-5-1, but Kljestan will start on the bench. Deuce will move central
and Donovan will take a spot on the wing, opposite Bedoya. Agudelo will start up top in place of
the injured Altidore.
Falling behind two goals and then seeing his side go down a man on a 37th minute red card wasn't
the way that Sephane Auvray and Guadeloupe wanted to start their 2011 Gold Cup campaign. Panama
jumped to an early lead from goals by Blas Perez and Luis Tejada, then saw Mickael Tacalfred sent
off in the 37th minute.

TAMPA - The U.S. men's national team has a history of dominance over Panama, but the Americans
are entering their second Group C match in the CONCACAF Gold Cup knowing a win won't come easy.
TAMPA, Fla. A 2-0 halftime deficit proved too much for the United States Men's National Team to
overcome on Saturday night as they were upset 2-1 by Panama in their second match of CONCACAF Gold
Cup group play. The loss was the U.S.'s first ever to Panama and first ever in the CONCACAF Gold
Cup group stages.

HOUSTON - The U.S. men's national team may be downplaying that its semifinal match against
Panama is a chance at redemption, but that doesn't mean the Americans aren't hoping for a little
payback.

Massacre.
In 2009, Clarence Goodson replaced an injured Jimmy Conrad to help the US on to a 2-1 victory in

Sucking in Canada's outside combo of Simeon Jackson and Josh Simpson deeply on the left, the US
countered and controlled the flow of the game against the Canadians through the feet of Steve
Cherundolo and Landon Donovan in the first.

United States vs. Panama, getting under way shortly here.
It's Round II of the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament. The winner here advances outright; the loser
heads into Game 3 needing some points.
Panama is all about forward play, so eyes on Tim Ream and Clarence Goodson–both likely
starters–as they will be tested by Blas Perez and Luis Tejada at least a few times in this
one.
For the right to advance to the Finals, the US will have to avenge a group stage defeat to Panama.
In the first meeting in Tampa, the Red Tide came quickly out of the gates, catching the Yanks by
surprise and taking a 2-nil first half lead. The Yanks responded after the break with a 68th minute
header from Clarence Goodson, but Panama held on for the 2-1 upset.
The U.S. men's national team can qualify for its fourth straight CONCACAF Gold Cup Final tonight
(7pm, Fox Soccer Channel) by beating Panama in a rematch of the group stage match Panama won, 2-1,
eleven days ago.
The Americans are coming in confident after a comprehensive 2-0 victory against Jamaica in the
quarterfinals, while Panama comes in off a grueling penalty shootout win against El Salvador.
US's StrategyBob Bradley elected to keep the same 4-2-3-1 formation that worked well v Jamaica on Sunday.
Surprisingly, Landon Donovan started on the bench once again. The only change was Juan Agudelo in
for the injured Jozy Altidore as the central striker.
Panama's StrategyThe Red Tide came into the match without their striker Blas Perez, who was sent off v El Salvador.
Canada's quest to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup has started off in fine fashion.
After beating St. Lucia convincingly on Friday, the Canadians topped Puerto Rico by a 3-0
scoreline on the road behind goals from Iain Hume, Simeon Jackson and Tossaint Ricketts to take
early control of Group D on Tuesday.

Different coach, same old inconsistency.
That was the story Tuesday night as Argentina slumped to a 1-0 defeat away to Venezuela in the
second round of 2014 World Cup qualifying in South America. Despite replacing coach Sergio Batista
after a poor performance at the 2011 Copa America, Argentina once again struggled against a lesser
opponent under new coach Alejandro Sabella.
