We've been a bit lax about posting lately. Mea culpa and all that. I went on a bit of a medical
safari, travelling to Munich, Germany to have football-hero Dr. Muschaweck fix my chronic
groin/pelvic pain, caused by a double sports hernia, just like DC United Captain Jaime Moreno. And
former Newcastle captain Alan Shearer.
Mohamed Kallon, a striker from Sierra Leone. Tall, fast, not too old at 28, with a natural knack
for scoring goals. He was just a few months ago being linked to Portsmouth of the English Premier
League. This is really good stuff. Imagine this guy up top with Blanco. As you can see here, he
hasn't [.
For a while the Fire have been looking for someone to play along side Blanco. I'd even heard Blanco
trying to get some of his National teammates to come up to the MLS and play in Chicago with him.
But Blanco and the rest of the Fire may need to learn some French since head coach [...]
Well, we can't complain about the officiating this time; we lost this one all on our own. We
started the season in such a promising manner. Six wins, six clean sheets. I really believed we
could do it. But how far we have fallen. We are lost. We have none of the composure we had
[...]
An interesting move by the Chicago Fire as they acquire the rights to Brian McBride from Toronto
F.C. The Fire won't actually get to have McBride play for them until after the Olympic games are
over, but that will serve as a good way to get him into game shape and ready for the stretch run
and the playoffs.
AEK ended their second friendly of the preseason against German Second Division team Greuther
Furth in a 2-2 draw. AEK went down early on in the first minute and by the end of the scond half
they were down 0-2. Two goals however, in the 83rd and 85th minutes of the game allowed AEK to
catch [...]
We play Larissa F.C. tomorrow, Saturday, February 9th, at 9:45 am East Coast Time. I am very
nervous about this match, for the following reasons. First, Larissa are no push-overs. They
won the Greek Cup last year and had a okay run in this year's UEFA Cup, defeating Blackburn of the
EPL in the first round before losing [.
This is from an article about Real Salt Lake attendance and American fans adopting MLS.
L.A.'s Landon Donovan, Chicago's Cuauhtemoc Blanco and defensive shot-blocker Jon Busch are
among the best soccer players in the world.
I guess if I were standing in a room with some of the best soccer players in the world, you
could say I was "among the best".
After multiple requests, here ya go: Arruabarrena to Kallon to Blanco for the equalizer. Good
stuff. There's hope for us yet.
I think week 11 was one of the more memorably weekends in the 2008 season. It was a long and stretched out week with games every night from Wednesday all the way to Sunday. Thought that Wednesday night game was washed out in DC, it showed us something that this was going to be one [...]
That seems to be the question on fans' minds these days. And there is no simple answer. A
quick look at the transfer market helps illustrate this question. Panathinaikos, for example,
made several multi-million dollar signings in the Summer such as star midfielder Marcelo Mattos and
are now bolstering their squad even further with the likes of [.
In order for the LA Galaxy to bring David Beckham to Major League Soccer the rules had to
change. The salary cap was too small for Beckham to fit on any team by himself, so the league
added DP's which only count toward some of your salary cap. After that the team can pay that
player as much money as they want to.
I know I said we should just pretend this never happened, but then I saw a statistic showing we had
the majority of possession. I also found some video clips that I think are worth sharing:
That isn't a horrible performance, is it? Sure, we lost. But the offense showed some
really nice one-touch passing.
How many days late with this am I? I guess just two. We played Xanthi Wednesday, lined up like
this: Kallon Blanco Rivaldo Lagos Edinho Kafes Bourbos Pliatsikas Papastathopoulos Dellas Macho And
though we didn't completely dominate the entire match, we played a better brand of football
overall.
Eddie Lewis was passing through the Galaxy locker room, his head stitched up from where he'd
sustained a cut in the match versus Guatemala. Back in the pressbox, one of the reporters brought
up Eddie's age and wondered about his durability in the rough and tumble world of MLS. I pointed
out that Brian McBride was older.
The U.S. beating TnT was basically expected, so the big news to come out of the latest round of
qualifying games was by far Cuauhtemoc Blanco's retirement announcement.
He'll close things out at Azteca, but it looks like that's going to be it for seeing the bunny hop
performed by the man himself during international play.
Hopefully all HEGS readers had a good few days off for Christmas (those who had days off for it, at
least). After a couple of days away from the keyboard myself (you only need a mouse to play
Football Manager), I hope I've now got things straight enough to look back on what was a [...]
I don't mean weak in the aspect of the discipline handed down. Two years is a pretty solid
sentence. But U.S. Soccer wimped out.
I'll highlight the part that is especially crucial: "The suspension is due to his actions
during the U.S. Open Cup match between the Chicago Fire and D.C. United on July 8, 2008.
We drew with Getafe, but our equalizer came four minutes into added time, mere seconds from the
final whistle. This was a close call and does not bode well for the return fixture in Madrid
later this month. We shouldn't be surprised. Something has been wrong with AEK since the
beginning of the year.
As I reported in my last post (below) Blanco came in as a sub and and saved the day. There is a
very good post-match report by UEFA here. Blanco is a crucial piece of the AEK equation. I just
looked at my first post on this blog, back at the start of November 2007, and [...]
This morning at 9:30 AM we palyed our rescheduled Matchday 21 game against Skoda Xanthi (this was
the game postponed by the freak snowstorm). And we won 3-0 with goals by Blanco, Cesar and
Edinho. Kallon also started and, from what I am hearing, had a spectacular game. This is
fantastic news. After work I will [.
Funny - even though this is a bit old. Becks and Temoc are hanging out, with Blanco controlling the
remote.
Well, we play PAO Sunday at 12 noon East Coast Time. It some ways AEK and Panathinaikos are
similarly situated; we've both been eliminated from the Greek Cup and the UEFA Cup. Thus, we have
only one thing to focus on the league. In other ways, though, we are in different places.
Panathinaikos have [.

Blanco.
Two Designated Players will be in action on Thursday night. In the first DP game, Cuauhtemoc
Blanco's Chicago Fire will host DP-less New England while David Beckham's Galaxy will host also
DP-less San Jose in the second match. Beckham is also joined by off-the-books DP Landon Donovan, so
call it a triumvirate of DPs if you will.
A powerful shot by Rivaldo and a beauty of a goal by Ismael Blanco helped to ensure that if the
court's desicion tomorrow favours Kalamaria (and therefore AEK), AEK are champions. Demis
Nikolaidis said that no matter what the outcome, the players, in his eyes, are champions. AEK this
year had the best offence in [.
I guess maybe all along we were completely wrong about DC United. So far this season they haven't
looked at all like the Supporter's Shield winners of the last two years and I think now more than
ever we can stop throwing out the age old excuse of the CONCACAF Champions Cup hangover as to [...]
The torment that has been these post-season play-offs is finally over. Today we went out with a
whimper, not a bang, but that's not suprising given how things wrapped up this season. An AEK squad
with several reserve players and a third string keeper ceded an early goal but then equalized for
the draw.
Yesterday evening, AEK held a practise which was open to the fans to go and watch. The team
practised for about two hours. They first did various exercises such as heading the ball and ball
control exercises. They then did a passing exercise for about twenty minutes. At the end, for about
half an hour [.
So I talked to a U.S. Soccer honcho about Cuauhtemoc Blanco's outburst at the U.S. Open Cup.
I wanted to know why there hadn't been any news about disciplinary measures yet. Turns out, the
committee to deal with the matter hasn't even met yet. They'll decide the case in August,
apparently. There's no rush to act, I was told, since the Fire is out of the Cup and any censure
would only affect next year's tournament.
After a weekend off due to a freak snow storm, AEK travels to Spain tomorrow to play the second
leg of our UEFA Cup fixture against Getafe. Getafe's Cosmin Contra is predicting a win for his
side. AEK, for their part, will be playing just their second match under caretaker manager Nikos
Kostenoglou, a former AEK player and, until [.
We are playing well now. Blanco, Kallon and Edinho play very well together, with nice, tight
passing, unselfish play and killer instinct finishing. Nsaliwa and Zikos from the midfield, and
Bourbos from the right back also seem top plug in well with these attackers, overlapping when
necessary, making runs off the ball and quickly covering [.
We still may not win the title, but it feels good to win this derby, doesn't it? And not just win
it, but completely dominate the supposedly best team in the league for 90 minutes, score four goals
and keep a clean sheet. How did we win? We were, quite simply, so much more than the [...]
All the drama of the past week could not put a damper on our play. We are in top form. And as all
our fans knew, and now all of Greece knows, we are the real Champions. Despite the EPO, regardless
of Olympiaco's money, forgetting how even the CAS would not put things right, [...]
We lined up like this: Lyberopoulos Blanco Rivaldo Edinho Toszer -Kafes Bourbos -Pilatsikas Alves
-Dellas Macho And everyone played well, even Pilatsikas who is arguably a class below the rest of
the team (though steadily improving as he gets more first team experience). At the start of
the second half, Kallon subbed in for Lyberopoulos; in the 59th minute, Ramos Silva went in for
Edinho; and in [.
Another primetime clash in the eastern conference tonight. The big boys of Chicago against the boys
who should be big of DC. Both clubs are in opposite ends of the spectrum here going into week
number seven of the 2008 campaign. The one thing that may be going for the homeside is the fact
that they [.
Making a cancer kid's dream come true. Kudos to the Fire, Houston Dynamo and especially Cuauh
himself.
