In a culture where we readily deploy American sporting metaphor in everyday conversation, there's
little reason to embrace the English Premier League. It opens, at least in terms of its general
reception by the American "sports as sacred" public, with three strikes against it, or at the very
least, on fourth and long.
It's hard to believe that ten years ago, Blackpool were about to start the season in the fourth
tier of English football, what we now refer to as League 2. They finished 7th that season but
gained promotion through the play-offs, a habit they would repeat time and again over the next few
years.
It wasn't until 2007 that they got out of that division, finishing third and using the play-offs
for promotion.
Blackpool Football Club is an English football club founded in 1887 from the Lancashire seaside
town of Blackpool. Nicknamed The Seasiders, Blackpool will compete in the English Premier League
for the first time ever during the 2010/11 season. Following a climb of four divisions over nine
years, Blackpool's appearance in the EPL will mark their [.
One of the matches I watched live during the opening day of the Premier League was the one
featuring Wigan Athletic against Blackpool at the DW Stadium in
Lancashire. I watched it live on FoxSoccer.tv. But I was astonished as most viewers were what
unfolded before my eyes as Wigan completely collapsed defensively and Blackpool capitalized on
their complacency, completely ripping apart the Latics.
Recall from my earlier post that the 2009-10 Premiership season was unusually rich in goals. The
season came within a whisker of having the most goals ever in the history of the league, and its
1,053 goals and 2.8 goals per match were among the highest ever.
So now that the first matches have been played in this year's EPL season (with the exception of
Monday's Man U - Newcastle matchup), I thought it'd be useful to take a quick look at goal and shot
ratios for 2009-10 to get us up to speed on how teams got there, and what this may hold for
2010-11.
I love the Internet, and, with sites such as Ustream and Justin.tv, I can view live matches right
on my laptop. No more televisions for me!
However, I can't take the laptop everywhere, and there were quite a few times during World Cup 2010
that I had to miss a few matches because I was out and about.
