Scattered amongst the news articles this week in the soccer world were two disturbing stories of financial failure involving top clubs in both England and Scotland. Sadly, fans of Rangers and Portsmouth awoke to the news that their clubs had entered "administration" due to overwhelming financial debts which, according to the rules of their respective Leagues, means that both teams receive a 10-point deduction for the current season.

This past two weeks have been pretty meh if you are a United fan. Knocked out of the FA Cup and Champions League, we had nothing to look forward to over the last weekend, and nothing to really bother about over the past two mid-weeks. We lost at home to Ajax, which in itself is a pretty fair summation of how we have been in Europe at home this season piss poor.

After a two month hiatus, our Great Teams series is up and running again with this account of Blackburn Rovers' return to the top echelon in 2001, a third Lancastrian study in a row after Fiona Martin and myself considered matters Blackpool and Bolton in turn. My first visit to White Hart Lane came in February 2001. It was an FA Cup Fifth Round tie against Stockport County. My uncle had driven up from Southampton on the morning of the game and surprised me with a ticket.

I fell in love with the stadium and the atmosphere. I loved being part of the crowd and watching Spurs easily dispose of the opposition as they won 4-0.

My friends and I often indulge in extended debate on the club vs. country issue and how so far, it's ‘OK' to support England. We eschew the jingoism, the hooliganism, the sheer repugnance of many of those called on to sport the jersey, the overreaction to defeat and over-anticipation of victory, the arrogance and the aggression, but still wish for a team we can support.

In appreciation of the cat who made it onto the pitch at Anfield this evening I felt that it was about time I drew up another "Best XI". This time it's for players with "cat" in their name.

Fox Soccer Plus has Sheffield Wednesday - Blackpool in an FA Cup Fourth Round replay. Copa Libertadores on Fox Deportes: Defensor Sporting - Velez Sarsfield at 5pm and Fluminense - Arsenal at 7pm. For those of you who don't regularly follow the Libertadores, we're starting the Second Stage. That means eight groups of four teams each with 16 advancing to the knockout stage.

Blackpool beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 at Hillsborough in their FA Cup fourth replay round last night, with Lomano Tresor LuaLua (yes, that Lomano Tresor LuaLua!) grabbing the goal of the night the Seasiders' second with a superb curling effort from the apex of the area.

We have something a little different for you today on Twohundredpercent, as Paul Grech meets Ben Perry Acton, a player that forsook the English game to pursue a career in Malta. In addition to this, Ben had a grandfather whose name will be more than familiar to the supporters of Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers Bill Perry, who scored the winning goal in The Matthews FA Cup Final match between the two clubs in 1953.

Blackpool's reward for a scintillating 3-0 demolition of Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough is a trip to Everton in the FA Cup fifth round.

The game was effectively won in the opening 15 minutes as Matt Phillips continued his red-hot scoring streak with a precise finish and Lomana LuaLua curled in a superb effort soon after.

Landon Donovan has one more game to leave his mark on Everton.

The Los Angeles Galaxy captain will be returning from his loan spell this Sunday, Galaxy coach Bruce Arena told reporters on Tuesday. He will be returning to Los Angeles in full shape.

We have been waiting for this since November but that doesn't make it any better. The new manager, the younger team, and games like the awayday at Blackpool notwithstanding, no one has been able to fully enjoy the simplicity of Championship survival. That is because, when the first shoe hit the floor in November, we learned that 'self-sustaining' really meant 'injection of a £10.

Landon Donovan finishes his English adventure as Everton takes on Blackpool in FA Cup play, while Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea.

Landon Donovan's Everton loan might be coming to an anticlimactic close.

Everton manager David Moyes said that Donovan has been battling the flu and is doubtful for Saturday's FA Cup match against Blackpool at Goodison Park, though he has not been ruled out completely.

"Landon's been great all round, he's contributed in every area, on the pitch and off the pitch he's fitted in really well," Moyes said on Everton's official website.

Everton cruised into into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday, after a comfortable victory over Championship side Blackpool.

The Toffees got off to the best possible start when Royston Drenthe curled home a fine effort after just 49 seconds of play and only five minutes later the home side were two up, courtesy of Denis Stracqualursi.
