Arsenal 7 (Seven)-1 Blackburn Rovers Premier League 4th February 2012
After a sustained period of dismal performances and almost no points, Arsenal needed to
rediscover their mojo on Saturday if they were to stay in the hunt for a top-four finish.
The January 2011 transfer window was a blockbuster one as Premier League teams spent over £210
MILLION on transfers. Amongst the big spenders were Chelsea (David Luiz £21.4m, Fernando Torres
£50m), Liverpool (Andy Carroll £35m, Luis Suarez £22.8m) and Aston Villa (Darren Bent £18m,
Jean Makoun £6m).

treat.

A fun bit of news broke late yesterday evening. Two US National team defenders George John and
Omar Gonzalez were said to be leaving the national team camp for "club-related matters". Naturally
their two teams instantly sent out messages about those matters.

We've already seen Mario Balotelli celebrating a goal by revealing a t-shirt asking 'Why Always
Me?'. Now he's changed tack and language to declare his love for girlfriend Raffaella Fico. After
scoring against Blackburn in today's late kick-off, Balotelli lifted his shirt to show the message:
"Raffaella Ti Amo.
It shouldn't come as any surprise that the same twenty-five in clubs from last week's rankings are
all in this week's edition. That's been pretty standard recently. Nevertheless, there was more
movement than usual this week because of movement at or near the top of the tables in several of
Europe's top leagues.
Ashley Young has reiterated the point about the importance of experience, claiming that the
likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes command respect in the dressing room.
"The younger players have taken over this season, with their music and general
loudness," he said. "But if someone like Ryan Giggs or Paul Scholes starts talking we all
sit down and listen.
Some thoughts then:
Manchester City look a good team to me, but not as good a team as they should be. Carlos Tevez
could have had this league sewn up some time ago, and the fact that they needed the 95th minute of
the last game of the season suggests some under-achievement. They'll win the next few though I
imagine.

Time to squeeze in another belated and bloomin' astonishing wonder goal from the FA Cup third

Despite spending over over £100m on attacking players over the last year, Liverpool have one of
the worst goalscoring records in the league. Kenny Dalglish's team has even been outscored by the
likes of Blackburn and Bolton, and only six teams in the league have a worse home goalscoring
record.

How about that? The very same batch of players who managed to earn Steve Bruce a paltry 11
points from 13 games have since raked in 19 points from nine games under Martin O'Neill (including
last night's 3-0 victory over Norwich), a run that would see them topping the Premier League had
they begun counting after O'Neill's first game in charge of the Black Cats; a 2-1 win over
Blackburn on December 11th.

This may or may not be the guy
After months of vitriol and increasingly pathetic attempts to oust him from his position from
the more ridiculous sections of the club's support, Blackburn manager Steve Kean has admitted to
having hired a bodyguard to protect him at all times.
On Wednesday night the planets were clearly aligned in a perfect pattern to benefit Arsenal.
We got a hard-fought win at Goodison Park, a ground where Chelsea, Manchester City and the N17
Reprobates have all crashed and burned recently.
And while we were doing that the Spuds, with their enduring sense of comedy timing, were
dropping two points at home to Stoke and the Chavs were losing at the Oil Refinery.

Another season, another second-half charge by Manchester United. United's prowess when it really
matters has been proven time and again, and it looks to be another case of the same old, same old
this season. United left it late against Blackburn, but the end result was a seventh straight
league win and a five-point lead [.
Man City thrashed Norwich, Swansea blanked Blackburn, and much more in the English Premier
League on April 14, 2012.
Norwich City 1-6 Manchester City
A dominating win for Manchester City who keep their title hopes alive. Carlos Tevez scored a hat
trick in a rare start while Sergio Aguero had a brace.
Bolton Wanderers 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park this week has handed Owen Coyle's
side a Premier League lifeline whilst also ensuring that the Villa boss, Alex McLeish, will have a
few sleepless nights over the next couple of weeks as his team become inexorably dragged into the
relegation fight.
Very interesting decision the Premier League has taken ahead of Sunday's Premier League fixture
between Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers. The Premier League has decided that there will be no
pre-match hand shake due to the legal situation involving John Terry and Anton Ferdinand.
A statement on the its website read:
"The Premier League position on the pre-match handshake convention remains
consistent.
Premier League Betting Preview: Stoke v Arsenal, Norwich v Liverpool, Chelsea v QPR and
Tottenham v Blackburn - originally posted on Soccerlens.com
The last weekend of April could see the Premier League title decided one way or the other.
But before Monday night, there's quite a lot of football still to play with Arsenal fighting to
secure third place, Chelsea and Tottenham fighting to make up ground to fourth place and Liverpool
fighting to stay ahead of Everton in the league table.
Howard Webb on Newcastle v Man City.
Chris Foy on Man Utd v Swansea.
United have won the league.
We'd like to offer our congratulations to Sir Ferguson and Mike Riley on their stunning
triumph.
A team unable to defeat FC Basel, Athletic Bilbao or Benfica in 6 games, beaten by Wigan, Crystal
Palace and Blackburn, slaughtered by City and Newcastle is still good enough to win yet another
tainted title triumph.
New footage showing Blackburn manager Steve Kean bad-mouthing his predecessor Sam Allardyce and
claiming Rovers would finish in the top-half of the table this season has emerged. The video,
reportedly filmed during last summer's pre-season trip to Hong Kong, was uploaded to YouTube
yesterday. We can only assume that whoever recorded wanted to give Kean [.

The Question: why are Liverpool struggling to score at home? | Jonathan
Wilson
Liverpool's scoring record at Anfield has been poor but those who blame bad luck and Andy
Carroll may be missing the point Liverpool sit a reasonably contented sixth in the table . They
have conceded fewer goals than anybody else in the Premier League and, although a gap of 11 points
to the leaders is probably too much to make up, there is no reason why they shouldn't mount a
strong challenge to qualify for the Champions League.
Interesting rumour doing the rounds today, don't think it'll ever happen but I'm pretty sure
it'd solve a lot of the problems in the Man United midfield if it was to come true Frank Lampard is
apparently wanted by Man United. Lampard is obviously unhappy with his current situation at
Chelsea, he's not featuring in all of their games under Villas-Boas and with United's midfield
looking very weak, Lampard could be a great signing.
No more than Arfa chance He has struggled to hold down a first team place recently, but Hatem Ben
Arfa showed Alan Pardew his true class in their FA Cup third round tie against Blackburn yesterday,
scoring one of the best goals the old competition has ever witnessed. With Newcastle trailing 1-0
and seventy minutes [.
Last summer, Liverpool rather famously spent big on players who created chances. To many, they
paid far too much for far too little and the results haven't lived up to the expenditure, but
regardless of whether one agreed with the approach at least there was a clearly identifiable
approach: Find the Premier League players who created the most scoring opportunities and then start
throwing money in their general direction.
Old head's experience to lead is crucial to the cause
The papers are going crazy with this fixture and all the focus is on Arsenal and how the mighty
have fallen. How this is no longer the plum tie of the Premier League season (somehow, I think the
numbers tells a different story), why there's no pizza or pastries being thrown at each other and
why there's no more fights between the two sets of players.

It took Clint Dempsey nine years to score the first hat-trick of his career, a feat he
accomplished on January 7 in an FA Cup win over Charlton Athletic.
It did not take much longer for him to do it again.
Dempsey became the first American to net a hat-trick in the Premiership on Saturday.
Football's a simple game. If you score more or concede less than the other side, you win the match.
So I thought it would be worth taking a look at which teams have been doing better than their
opponents. The simplest way of doing just that is to calculate differentials for the stuff that
matters most - goals - and the stuff without which - shots - the stuff that matters most usually
doesn't happen.

From what I've read from Mirrorfootball's 'exclusive' is that an Arsenal fan group are planning to
put bin-liners on all empty seats in the ground, in the next home match vs Blackburn, to highlight
dwindling attendances... One problem with that chaps Arsenal play to a full house practically every
game.
