Slovenia 2-2 USA
2010 FIFA World Cup
18 June 2010
The United States would storm back in the second half from an 0-2 deficit and denied a win by a
poor referee decision in the final minutes.
Slovenia would start out with the better of play and have a lead after only 13 minutes.

If the U.S. national team's World Cup opening draw against England was a test of its character,
the match against Slovenia was a final exam.
After falling behind, 2-0, to goals from Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankic, the United States
managed a memorable comeback draw in its second Group C match.
Over the moon and into the last 16.

So, we made it. Anyone doom mongers out there will still state that the performances thus far
have been patchy, but does it really matter?

Something for your lunchbreak: every goal scored at the 2010 World Cup.
What struck me is the amount of er, how to say this SHIT goals. Like, a lot of close-range
rubbish, especially tap-ins after goalkeeping errors. Nice one, Jabulani.

everything you need to prepare you for the enticing encounter.
Time: 10 am ET
Place: the legendary Ellis Park, Johannesburg, South Africa
The scenario: Slovenia are on top of Group C (Slovenia 3 pts, England 1 pt,
USA 1 pt, Algeria 0 pts) after a fortunate 1-0 victory over Algeria, but the United States expect
a win.

Well, the US are still in this. Very much so. They really could and should have won, but any fan
will be happy with a draw after going down 2-0 at halftime. Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankic
scored in the 13th and 42nd minute, respectively.
Steven Defour is a much coveted midfielder from Standard Liege, not Racing Genk! See below.
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is on the brink of completing a deal for Israeli
play-maker Gail Assulin. The 19-year-old, dubbed 'the new Lionel Messi' earlier in his career, has
cancelled his contract with Barcelona and is available on a free transfer.

Continuing with the provisional roster announcements in recent days, Slovenia head coach Matjaz Kek
has finalized his 30-man list. 23 players from the list will face the U.S. team in Group C of the
2010 FIFA World Cup on June 18. Kek's new-look squad boasts West Bromwish Albion midfielder Robert
Koren as its captain, but stands firm that its biggest strength is its unity.
The USA meet Slovenia on June 18th in what could be a very crucial match. One of the players to
watch out for: Milivoje Novakovic
At 6' 4" the FC Koln striker is a physically imposing striker with undoubted aerial abilities
and for a man of his height, exceptionally quick with very good ball control.
The U.S. national team's second opponent at the World Cup, and the team considered their best
competition for a place in the Round of 16 after England, named its 23-man World Cup roster on
Tuesday and Slovenia didn't have any real surprises in the mix.
Led by standout goalkeeper Samir Handanovic and veteran Robert Koren, Slovenia's side will offer
a tough test for the Americans when the sides meet on June 18th.

The World Cup continues, it's the third day of the tournament and there have been nine goals and
two keeper errors. While these are some pretty negative statistics, it's very possible that the
goals will start flowing in much more with the upcoming Germany vs Australia game.
Algeria - Slovenia
Algeria seemed to be controlling much of the first half, they created most of the chances with a
dangerous Belhadj free kick which Handanovic had to tip over the bar and Halliche coming close with
a header from a corner.
A bizarre bit of goalkeeping by Chaouchi costs Algeria what would have been a hard earned draw
despite being down to ten men.
He tries to scoop up the ball without ever getting into position and Robert Koren's almost
speculative shot skips deflects of his shoulder into goal. It was the 78th minute.
Life is rosy if you are a Slovenian football fan. Not only have the Slovenians qualified for a
World Cup for the second time, their Prime Minister Borut Pahor also cleaned the team's boots as a
reward, a charming act showing how football can emphasize a sense of community in a country.
Algeria 0 Slovenia 1 (World Cup, Junio 13, 2010)
Disaster in the 13th minute! Birsa who has easily been the best player for the Slovenians drills
a long distance shot with his favoured left foot. Tim Howard did not move a muscle as the ball
rockets into the left upper corner.
The Slovenians have looked dangerous when they have the ball and have been dominating
possession.

The USA are truly a team of determination and grit like none other, yet another fantastic come-back
to earn an important point which just might be enough for them to pass on to the next stage with
some luck.
Slovenia - USA
The first half was Slovenia's, they were able to grab two goals, the first in the 13th minute with
Birsa who with a tentative strike from outside the area somehow gets it past Howard who was rooted
to the spot.
1. USA were robbed in the end. Absolutely nothing wrong with Maurice Edu's would-be last-gasp
winner. 2. Great result for England though (depending on what Germany are planning on doing over
the next few days). 3. Pah! Michael Bradley's only in the team because he is the coach's son... 4.
Best goal so far from Valter Birsa?
After going down 2-0 at the break, a fired up USA squad took the pitch in the second half,
netted two goals, and still walked away feeling like they had lost the match.
However, efforts made by Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley helped secure further hope for the
U.S. after scoring goals in the 48th and 82nd minute.
Obviously the Maurice Edu goal that referee Koman Coulibalu disallowed in the 86th minute is the
big story here. But we've already covered that once. Click the link to see the video and join the
conversation. I want to focus on what happened before the controversy, which was a strong start
from Slovenia and an excellent second half comeback from the USA.
USA fought back from two goals down to earn a battling 2-2 draw with Slovenia and keep their FIFA
World Cup™ hopes alive in an exciting Group C clash at Ellis Park.
Matjaz Kek's men looked on course for a second straight win in the section when they took a 2-0
lead into the break through Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankic but the Americans hit back as
Landon Donovan narrowed the deficit before Michael Bradley equalised eight minutes from time.

The U.S. was robbed.
In the books, it will go down as a 2-2 draw to Slovenia, but we know better.

The U.S. men's national team pulled off one of the best comebacks in World Cup history on
Friday, only to have a tragic referee's decision deny a victory for the ages.
There is no denying the team endured a rough first half, a disappointing start considering the
stakes, but there is also no denying the Americans showed great poise and heart to battle back and
erase a two-goal deficit.
Antes desse jogo, as 2 seleções nunca haviam jogado oficialmente.
Is Slovenian head coach Matjaz Kek one of the best?
The pink elephant in the room is that the US got a goal taken from them by an absurd call that
was one of a handful of absurd calls throughout the US v. Slovenia match. For instance there is a
strong argument that Marko Suler should have received a red card for taking Altidore down just
outside the Slovenian 18 yard box, while he was running to latch onto a pass.
Matthew Upson will be John Terry's partner, the fourth in as many weeks
Much of today's space was taken by John Terry's grovelling apology to Fabio Capello but the
Chelsea central defender is sure to be in the thick of things today.
Terry is on multiple partners on the pitch, like he is off it.
Slovenia: 1-Samir Handanovic; 2-Miso Brecko, 4-Marko Suler, 5-Bostjan Cesar,
13-Bojan Jokic; 10-Valter Birsa, 8-Robert Koren, 18-Aleksandar Radosavljevic, 17-Andraz Kirm;
9-Zlatan Ljubijankic, 11-Milivoje Novakovic.
Matjaz Kek has not changed his line up. We have the dangerous Valter Birsa and Robert Koren
(can't believe West Brom let him go), and goalscorer Zlatan Ljubijankic.
I think it's fair to say that the introduction's already on site, so I'll just go straight into
the game. England line up as a 4-4-2, with Gerrard on the left and Milner on the right, and Defoe
partnering Rooney up front. As with last night's Nigeria-South Korea report, I'll include how the
group stands, and any changes.

Thank whatever God you believe in.
It's hard to focus on England, despite my priorities, after seeing the US snatch a very deserved
winner in injury time, but let's soldier on.

experiencia.
It wasn't the greatest England performance of all time, but it was night and day when compared
to the struggle against Algeria. Fabio Capello changed tactics and went more 4-4-2, with James
Milner wide right instead of Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe partnering Wayne Rooney up front
instead of Emile Heskey.
England finally came up with the goods in the final group game. The win wasn't really emphatic
and the performance wasn't one that would make the other contenders sit up and take notice, but
given the previous two outings this was a much improved show.
The players looked like they wanted to win and they were up for it.
