In hindsight, relegation often seems inevitable. If you had asked the pundits, Blackpool's demotion
to the Championship last year was all but a done deal in August. But do the data agree? And what
can they tell us about the inevitability and predictability of relegation ahead of time, rather
than after the fact?
At the midpoint of his first season at Birmingham City FC, Jonathan Spector is optimistic about the
team's chance to make a quick return to the English Premier League for 2012-13 season.

Over the last couple of days, I've been doing some work on my databases for the last few years'
worth of league play. In the process, I've come across some interesting patterns that I thought
were worth sharing. One of them was simply the distribution of full time results in the Premier
League last year.
It's that time of year again when I start going through my data from last year to make sure
everything is up to date and accurate before the new season begins. In the (tedious) process of
coding and cleaning data sets, I try to have a little fun and benchmark a couple of things for the
upcoming campaign.

English football was shocked by the arrest in Hong Kong of Carson Yeung Ka-sing, the chief and
single-largest shareholder of Birmingham City FC's HKSE-listed holding company, Birmingham
International Holdings, an investment, entertainment and sportswear firm registered in the Cayman
Islands. BIH shares were suspended from trading.

Birmingham's acting chairman Peter Pannu is not a happy bunny, and for good reason.
As you may be aware, Brum manager Alex McLeish resigned in time-honoured fashion by email
yesterday with one eye on the Aston Villa vacancy.
Pannu and his cronies on the City board are feeling understandably jilted after having recently
tied up deals for three new players that were sounded out by Big Eck himself, who chose to do a
e-runner while negotiations for a fourth new face (Danny Koevermans from PSV) were ongoing.
An encouraging day for Liverpool fans all round. Liverpool never looked like losing this one and
their work rate was top class, off the ball more than on. Maxi Rodriguez returned to the line up,
scoring a hat trick whilst Dirk Kuyt scored a tricky shot (his 6th in 7 games). A rare goal from
Joe Cole (his second for Liverpool in competitions) put the game well beyond Birmingham's
sights.
Arsene Wenger has talked a lot about tackling. Invariably the discussion gets hijacked by
clueless hacks and pundits who convert that into an Arsenal V Rest of the League debate and take
pride in highlighting one or two poor tackles by Arsenal players.
According to a number of morons who have the privilege of influencing public opinion, Arsenal
are just as bad as any other team when it comes to tackling.
