Remember the great Manchester Billboard War of 2009? The ceasefire was never particularly observed
and it is have been well and truly broken in the wake of Carlos Tevez handing in his transfer
request. Here is a collection of some of the Photoshop re-workings of the infamous 'Welcome to
Manchester' advert taken out when Tevez [.
If every day could be like the World Cup, that'd be magic especially for soccer fans in the
United States.
Driving to the World Cup Viewing Parties at Wowies in Boca Raton today, I saw a billboard on the
side of the highway advertising a World Cup party at a local casino. Then, after arriving at my
destination to watch the lackluster opening games (including the mind-numbing France against
Uruguay match), it suddenly hit me that the World Cup is everywhere.
The latest and greatest from one Diego Maradona, imploring all of Argentina's opponents to...no
one knows:
"I'm not concerned [about a lack of warm-up games] because our practices carry you to a
level you might not reach in a match, risking injury to one or more [players]," said
Maradona.
Last week I wrote about feeling removed from the fight against the owners being based in America.
And I've had little in the way of concrete suggestions besides boycotting official merchandise and
joining Spirit of Shankly. McrRed also beat me to the punch of this post, adding a few excellent
links and ideas in the comments of the "Who's Next" post below.
Football supporters are already beginning to have a bit of fun at the prospect of Wayne Rooney
leaving Old Trafford. And it looks like one of them is already one step ahead of Manchester City
with this proposed billboard (Tevez style) that could adorn the entrance to the northern city.
Don't play to be remembered A Nike advertising stunt has hit the skids thanks to Fabio Capello. A
giant rock carving billboard featuring Theo Walcott has been placed alongside Wayne Rooney, James
Milner and Rio Ferdinand on London's Cromwell Road. The words Play To Be Remembered are carved into
the huge advert.
The "Play to be Remembered" ad now placed in London is a sort of Mt. Rushmore homage to the
England team and specifically four of the players. The giant rock carving billboard featuring Theo
Walcott has been placed alongside Wayne Rooney, James Milner and Rio Ferdinand on London's Cromwell
Road.
The billboard you see above is just blocks away from Qwest Field, the home of the Seattle
Flounders. It's great to see the front office keeping up community relations in the city up north.
The best part is seeing the flounders whine and moan.

Graffiti on a Nike billboard in Manchester city centre:
Er, okay then, that's fairly clear.
Some hardcore United fans also travelled to Rooney's home in Cheshire to warn him off a move to
City. Eyewitnesses reported a mob outside his house, brandishing a banner also bearing the warning:
"If you join City you're dead".
Manchester United vs Manchester City: A match that wasn't worth watching until just recently,
these two Prem sides stationed in the gritty North West of the her Majesty's island nation meet for
a clash of now top-sides this afternoon. That is quite a run-on, but you're not really reading this
anyway.
For the first time that I can remember, MLS sent out a purely commercial e-mail today in the
form of a VW advertisement. The e-mail was presumably sent to all who have registered their
e-mail with MLS. The e-mail made no reference to soccer (other than the sender address and an
official partner note) and simply included a number of lease deals for the longtime MLS automobile
partner.
Spirit of Shankly, a Liverpool supporter's union, has erected billboard posters in its city to
protest against the American owners of Liverpool FC, Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
The posters, which read "Tom & George: Debt, Lies, Cowboys Not Welcome Here," have appeared on
billboards on major roads into Liverpool.
Fancy seeing your favourite chant or slogan in letters six feet tall on a poster in the centre
of Manchester? Well now is your big chance!
www.cityutd.com offers one lucky fan of Manchester United, and another of Manchester City the
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have their own words displayed on a giant billboard in
Manchester.

In form Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has revealed a few cracks behind the City of
Manchester Stadium doors. The club's leading goalscorer has revealed that he was unhappy with the
decision to sack Mark Hughes so quickly, and also expressed his dislike for new boss Roberto
Mancini's training methods.
This campaign is the first I've seen for the WPS that looks like it was designed by people who play
and/or actually watch the sport. These ads are actually quite traditional - when promoting men's
sports. Women's soccer hasn't gotten this treatment (closest was a Gatorade commercial with Mia
Hamm years ago.
I was rewatched the Nike "Write the Future" commercials today and noticed that
all of the players involved actually had pretty sub-par World Cup performances. Wayne
Rooney, for example, was a shadow of the player we saw at Manchester United last season,
and Cristiano Ronaldo did not look very dangerous.
Most girls get a piece of jewellery as their first gift from a serious boyfriend. I knew my husband
was the man for me when he turned up with a billboard-sized advertising poster.
Portland Timbers Post to their Facebook, billboard just down road from Qwest.
Strong move, putting up a billboard near the Sounders' home field in Seattle.
I have to admit, having been to Portland last month for the PDL final and having seen the moves
they're making, I quite like the cut of the Timbers' jib.
The battle for Northwest supremacy begins in 2011.
Frankly, the above photo is the reason I absolutely adore the beautiful game. Seattle Sounders
FC and Portland Timbers have not played in the same division since 2008 when the Emerald City side
made the jump to Major League Soccer for the 2009 campaign.
Oh, my God, I love this.
As you can tell by the clouds, the billboard is in Seattle, Washington. Actually, that curvy girder
thing to the right is Qwest Field.
This isn't the first time Oregon pro teams have pulled a stunt like this, either. Back in 2002, the
University of Oregon rented a big-ass billboard - billboard, hell, it was the side of a building -
in downtown Los Angeles.
I'm sure you've seen this photo by now as it was all over the web last night and on the telecast
of the Seattle-RSL game on ESPN2.
This just adds to the ever-growing list of reasons why the Portland-Seattle-Vancouver rivalries
will be absolutely dynamite for Major League Soccer next year.
It is a rivalry that goes back many years to the old days of American soccer. The rivalry
between the two Northwest powers of Portland and Seattle took a minor break as Seattle jumped to
the "Big League" and Portland remained in what is essentially the second division. Well folks it is
definitely on again and earlier than you might think.
I'm rarely one to pile on, and lord knows every blogger and their mother have commented on this
particular story, but what the hell - it's too good to pass up.
The Timbers planted their flag in Sounder Land via a billboard this week; the advert in question is
the latest shot fired in a rivalry that has everyone with an interest in MLS drooling in
anticipation for 2011.
The controversy over a clever billboard put up near Seattle's Qwest Field is one indicator of what
will be the best rivalry in Major League Soccer: Portland Timbers versus Seattle Sounders. (Yes,
both teams have a rivalry with the Vancouver Whitecaps, but that one has been much more friendly,
relatively speaking.
I know I'm likely in the minority in this, at least among more active fans of the Sounders, and
it's likely to be a controversial opinion, but I really don't feel any sort of rivalry with the
Timbers and I'm not sure why I'd even want to.
Much has been made of the billboard that's been put up in SoDo essentially trolling Sounders
fans.
The big news of the week is the firing of Preki and Mo Johnston in Toronto and we are all over the
story, we also discuss a variety of topics with Bobby Rhine and a certain billboard in Seattle. On
the phone this week are correspondents from Portland, Toronto, Dallas, Columbus, Seattle, LA and
San Jose.
I love the hype Portland is doing for next year. First the billboard in Seattle and now it looks
like the commercials are starting to roll out. Quality stuff too.
Wayne Rooney has signed a five year contract extension with Manchester United, the club
announced this morning.
The news comes as a surprise since many believed, myself included, that the striker would join
Manchester City or another rival club.
It'll be interesting to hear what convinced Rooney to sign an extension since on Wednesday his
prepared statement said that he believed the club lacked ambition.
SEATTLE/PORTLAND In September, the Portland Timbers planted a slightly taunting billboard near
Qwest Field declaring "PORTLAND, OREGON SOCCER CITY USA 2011." But it didn't look like this. As
part of the "There's no pity in the Rose City" marketing campaign, billboards are popping up around
Portland featuring attractive women (and men) holding forestry tools.
