The author at White Hart Lane, with Heineken Backstage Pass and contented smile;
Gareth Bale pops up on the White Hart Lane scoreboard
I was fortunate enough to attend last night's UEFA Champions League game at White Hart Lane as a
guest of Heineken, who hooked me up with an access-all-areas 'Backstage Pass' football is the new
rock and roll, clearly.
What ho. If I've been doing this right seasoned visitors to AANP Towers should know that as
of this Saturday the book "Spurs' Cult Heroes" becomes available to buy in shops.
To mark the occasion and whet your appetite, I have posted a world exclusive no less – below, for
your visual delectation, is the Introduction to Spurs' Cult Heroes.
For 26 years of my Spurs supporting life I was a fit and mobile, but sometimes inebriated
Tottenham fan. Everything changed for me in September 2004 when I stupidly broke my neck on a night
out in Plymouth.
This incident would prove to be serious and of life changing magnitude. The vertebrae at the
base of my neck had dislocated causing a spinal cord injury that has left me paralysed from the
shoulders down.

He is to Manchester United what Bill Shankly is to Liverpool, what Herbert Chapman or Arsene
Wenger is to Arsenal and what Bill Nicholson is to Tottenham. Only Sir Alex Ferguson's achievements
outstrip them all.
But what is it, this undeniable brilliance, that Sir Alex has for putting together title winning
team after title winning team, year after year?
On This Day In Spurs History: 3rd June
1950 As was also the case yesterday, this day in history marks the anniversary of a club
celebration at the Savoy Hotel. On June 3rd 195 we were celebrating becoming Division Two champions
under Arthur Rowe. In attendance was Jack Kirwan, the only surviving member of the 1901 FA Cup
winning team.

1908 On this day in 1908, Spurs were elected to the Football League from the Southern League.
Our initial application to replace Lincoln City, was unsuccessful as Bradford City received four
more votes. However, Stoke City then resigned from the Football League for financial reasons and we
were able to take their place.

1995 On this day in 1995, we broke our transfer record to buy Chris Armstrong from Crystal
Palace for £4.5m. Armstrong had a successful partnership with Teddy Sheringham in his first season
at the club, but struggled somewhat for the rest of his Spurs career.

1956 On this day in 1956, Tony Galvin was born. On the recommendation of Bill Nicholson, Galvin
was signed from non-league Goole Town in 1978 and eventually played in our FA Cup winning sides of
1981 and 1982, as well as the UEFA Cup winning side of 1984.

2003 On this day in 2003, Spurs lost 2-1 in a pre-season friendly to the South African team the
Orlando Pirates. The game was notable for the fact that a certain Mbulelo Mabizela played a blinder
and was signed by us the following week.
Well first of all, a history lesson: in our first ever European Cup tie, back in 1962,
Blanchflower, Mackay et al travelled to Poland to play Gornik, under the auspices of Bill
Nick, and promptly found themselves 4-0 down at half-time, before scoring two late goals. Back at
the Lane in the return leg we won 8-1.
It's funny to finish reading a new biography of Bill Nicholson in the same week that Sir Alex
Ferguson continued his one sided war with the BBC.
The Nicholson that emerges from Brian Scovell's affectionate portrait would have found the cult of
personality that surrounds managers like Ferguson as an alien concept.

He might not like being called a "wheeler-dealer" but Harry Redknapp is recognised as being the
best English manager in the game today. Rightly or wrongly, he has always had a reputation of being
something of a Del Boy as far as the transfer market is concerned. However, does he have the best
transfer record in English football?
