by CARL ELDRIDGE Oh, the drudgery of international week. Let's get these games out the way and
look forward to the trip to Manchester City on Saturday. Club news items are few and far between as
the back pages discuss the merits or otherwise of England beating Slovenia and turning the
attention to the crucial World Cup qualifier against Croatia on Wednesday at Wembley.
1. What a disappointment. Where was the nailbiting last gasp qualification securing goal/hard
fought 0-0? Two games to spare? Give us a break, Capello. 2. Only kidding! We're going to South
Africa. And what an emphatic way to make sure. 3. Composed passing play, coherent attacking play,
neat angles and positioning.
Blame it on the pitch
Ok time to admit it, the shiny, ultra-improved new Wembley has become a bit of an embarrassment
for the FA now hasn't it? England's new ‘home of football' was meant to be the shining light in
the 2018 World Cup bid and a state of the art football stadium for the country to revel in.
With an incredibly important qualifier against Ukraine in Croatia coming up for the Croats,
National Team Manager/Head Coach Slaven Bilic has named his squad: Goalkeepers: Stipe
Pletikosa (Spartak Moscow), Vedran Runje (RC Lens), Danijel Subasic (Hajduk Split) Defenders:
Vedran Corluka (Tottenham Hotspur), Robert Kovac (Dinamo Zagreb), Josip Simunic (Hertha Berlin),
Hrvoje Vejic .
According to the Daily Mail, Celtic boss Gordon Strachan has
decided to resign and is now being linked with Sunderland.
Frank Rijkaard, Ronald Koeman, and Slavan
Bilic are also being linked with the open coaching position.
The retired Croatia captain, Niko Kovac, has finally decided his future in football. After
announcing his retirement from playing the game, he was offered several positions from two clubs
and the Croatia national team alongside Slaven Bilic. Not ready for a position on the national
team, Niko chose between the two .
Slaven Bilic has backed his Croatia side to burst England's World Cup bubble by exploiting what he
has identified as a missing link in the make-up of Fabio Capello's squad. England's fortunes have
been transformed under Capello and, after seven straight wins in their qualifying campaign, can
clinch top spot in .
Some moments are never meant to be forgotten. The entire world of football witnessed one such
shocking moment a little less than two years ago in London. On a rainy evening at
Wembley, hosts England were expected to advance to the finals of
Euro 2008 with just a draw needed against visiting Croatia.

Slaven Bilic knows something about England that we don't. [The Guardian] Sven Eriksson attracts
cross-dressing footballers.
363 days ago, at the beginning of their World Cup qualifying campaign, I wrote that England's 4-1
victory over Croatia in Zagreb was just as lucky as good, and we shouldn't expect it every time
out.
I was so cocky in my cynicism, I actually wrote, "But if I were a betting man, I'd put money on
Croatia to win at Wembley in a year's time.
"If somebody stamps on your head in that way, you wouldn't say, 'thank you very
much' and turn the other cheek. Only Jesus Christ did that."
Wenger backs Van Persie for speaking out about the unholy incident.
"I don't watch Match of the Day, I watch Coronation Street
instead.
Slaven Bilic has been linked with a number of top management jobs around Europe and at time appears
to be actively trying to get one. However the Croatian FA are confident they can keep their man.
"Slaven is in the base camp preparing for our World Cup qualifier against Ukraine on ...
The fluid 4-4-2 has been so synonymous from Arsenal under Arsene Wenger but there are greater
subtleties beneath than the mere physical arrangement of players.

Season 2008/09 was a one-off. Yes, the Gunners have under-performed in recent years but the
fluid 4-4-2 so synonymous with Arsenal under Wenger was replaced by a functional 4-2-3-1 system
(although the 4-5-1 has been commonly used in Europe).
By CARL ELDRIDGE With no transfers to talk of after a rather dull conclusion to trading on
deadline day, the coverage of the Arsenal focuses on Eduardo's ban for diving and the pledge to
fight the punishment by Arsene Wenger. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns =

The Sun starts proceedings by telling us the Gunners will take on the imbeciles
at Uefa after they branded him a cheat.

I should be a Bond villain. ... How do you become a Bond villain? ... Should I kidnap Daniel
Craig? ... I have the look down. One ear ring, creepy smile, air of icy menace. ... "Good evening,
Mr. Bond." ... I need minions. ... Luka Modric can be my minion.
Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has claimed he knows England's weaknesses here are the three areas
where we think Fabio Capello's side may be vulnerable.

1. England's playing style puts too much strain at the back
Fabio Capello was right to back Glen Johnson after his defender was on the receiving end of much
criticism after the 2-1 win over Slovenia.
Wow, waking up just to see all those journalists crying on how Bilic (or Markovic rather) picks
his friendlies ain't the best way to start the morning. But seriously though, the journalism in
Croatia is rubbish. Like fast food. It's all around, lacks the attention & nutrition of a real
meal, and in the end will leave you plunging the nearest available restroom.

Tenerife 1 - 1 Atlético Madrid(1-0) 3' Nino, (1-1) 21' Jurado
- A poor match between two teams that are really struggling to escape the attentions of the
relegation zone. Atlético Madrid would have wanted to sign off before Christmas
with a much needed three points, but fell behind to an early Nino strike and only
managed to salvage a draw.
