There will be something new and something old on the University of Wisconsin women's soccer
team's 2011 schedule.
The Badgers will have a new Big Ten Conference foe in Nebraska, which makes the move from the
Big 12 Conference next fall. UW coach Paula Wilkins said the addition of the
Cornhuskers will change the dynamic of the conference.
John Trask didn't need to read up on University of Wisconsin men's soccer
history before he interviewed for the position last week.
"They were asking me questions about, 'What do you really know about Wisconsin soccer?' I truly
remember when Bill Reddan was the head coach and Jim
(Launder) was the assistant," Trask said Wednesday, referring to the program's
early years as a varsity team in the late 1970s and early '80s and recalling several Badgers of
that era he played against in the Wisconsin State Major League.
Scott Lorenz, a regular in the University of Wisconsin's lineup the past three
seasons, started training camp with the NSC Minnesota Stars of the USSF Division II Pro League
today in the Twin Cities.
Lorenz was a second-team All-Big Ten Conference pick in 2008 and '09 as a forward for the
Badgers, but is looking to make the Stars' inaugural roster as an outside defender, Inside
Minnesota Soccer reported.
For the first time in five years, the University of Wisconsin women's soccer team is nationally
ranked.
The Badgers, coming off a 10-6-6 season in which they advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA
tournament, are No. 20 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll
released Monday.
For the first time in seven years, Big Ten Conference women's soccer coaches expect the
University of Wisconsin to be among the league's top three teams this fall.
The 20th-ranked Badgers were picked third in the annual preseason coaches' poll, behind Penn
State and Ohio State. The last time they were projected as high as third was 2003.
Our Game Magazine, the online publication launched by several professional women's soccer
players, expects great things from the University of Wisconsin this season.
The Our Game Magazine College Preview ranks the Badgers 18th in the country, and they feature
prominently in the staff predictions.
The first week of the women's college soccer season brought Illinois senior defender
Danielle Kot (Brookfield Central) her first career Big Ten Conference honor.
Kot was named the Defensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal and anchoring a backline
that posted the shutout in a 2-0 victory over Loyola (Ill.
Big Ten Conference men's soccer coaches don't expect much from the University of Wisconsin this
fall.
The Badgers, heading into their first season under coach John Trask, were
picked last out of the seven teams in the annual coaches' preseason poll.
UW tied for third in the conference last year, but this will be a young side, as nine
letterwinners and seven starters have graduated, transferred or left the program.
The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team goes into Big Ten Conference play with some
momentum.
For the third straight game, junior forward Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon Homestead)
scored, senior goalkeeper Michele Dalton posted a shutout and the Badgers won,
beating Vanderbilt 2-0 Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.
Now that the University of Wisconsin women's soccer team is scoring goals and winning games, the
Badgers are starting to reap rewards.
Junior forward Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon Homestead) and senior goalkeeper
Michele Dalton earned weekly honors from the Big Ten Conference on Monday, while
UW returned to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America regional rankings.
The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team's winning streak came to an end Friday, but the
Badgers' extended two other important runs.
Senior goalkeeper Michele Dalton made three saves as UW pushed its unbeaten
streak to five with a 0-0 draw against Purdue in a Big Ten Conference opener in West Lafayette,
Ind.
Monica Lam-Feist doesn't score a lot of goals for the University of Wisconsin
women's soccer team, but they certainly seem to come at important times.
The sophomore midfielder netted her first goal of the season 81 seconds into overtime Sunday
afternoon as the Badgers extended their unbeaten streak to seven games with a 1-0 victory over
Indiana in a Big Ten Conference match in Bloomington, Ind.
Another scoreless week, another award for Michele Dalton – and with it, a
little history.
The University of Wisconsin senior goalkeeper claimed her second straight Big Ten Conference
Co-Defensive Player of the Week award Monday after posting two more shutouts for the Badgers over
the weekend.
The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak and shutout run and
exacted a bit of revenge on Thursday night.
Sophomore midfielder Alev Kelter scored on the Badgers' lone shot on goal in
the 57th minute, and senior goalkeeper Michele Dalton made four saves for her
sixth consecutive clean sheet as UW beat No.
It was a rare offensive outburst for the University of Wisconsin women's soccer team Sunday
afternoon – the Badgers scored more than one goal a game for just the second time this
season.
But as has been the case the past month, one would have been enough for a victory.
That's because senior goalkeeper Michele Dalton made four saves in her seventh
straight shutout, a 2-0 victory over Iowa in a Big Ten Conference match at the McClimon
Complex.
John Trask didn't want to get too carried away with his team's 1-1 tie against
Indiana on Sunday in Bloomington, Ind.
After all, the result in the Big Ten Conference opener left the University of Wisconsin men's
soccer team with a
1-6-2 record and an eight-game winless streak.
The shutouts keep coming for University of Wisconsin senior goalkeeper Michele
Dalton, and so do the awards.
Dalton was named the Big Ten Conference women's Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday,
becoming the first UW player to earn conference honors three straight weeks.
Ryan Vint's soccer resume has had several additions the past few days.
The University of Wisconsin senior goalkeeper set a career high by making 11 saves Sunday to
help the Badgers end a 17-year losing streak in Bloomington, Ind., with a 1-1 tie against
Indiana.
A day later, he was named the Big Ten Conference men's Defensive Player of the Week for the
first time.
Not even the top-scoring women's soccer team in the Big Ten Conference could figure out a way
past the University of Wisconsin's stingy defense.
Senior goalkeeper Michele Dalton made two saves for her eighth consecutive
shutout as the Badgers extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches with a 0-0 tie against
17th-ranked Illinois in front of 873 fans Sunday afternoon at the McClimon Complex.
University of Wisconsin men's soccer coach John Trask obviously wasn't too
thrilled with his team's latest loss, one that stretched its winless streak to 10 games.
But perhaps more importantly, the first-year coach had bigger problems with what he saw during
the Badgers' 3-2 setback against Michigan in a Big Ten Conference match watched by a season-high
crowd of 1,593 on Sunday afternoon.
After more than a month, the University of Wisconsin women's soccer team finally allowed a goal
Friday night.
And Caitlyn Martin's 28th-minute header proved to be enough as No. 24 Ohio
State topped the Badgers 1-0 in a Big Ten Conference match in Columbus, Ohio, ending UW's 10-game
unbeaten streak.
Things can't get much worse for the University of Wisconsin men's soccer team.
The Badgers were shut out for the sixth time this season, allowed three goals for the second
straight game and saw their winless streak reach 11 after a 3-0 loss to No. 21 Michigan State in a
Big Ten Conference match Sunday afternoon in East Lansing, Mich.
Paula Wilkins has walked off Jeffrey Field as the winning coach plenty of times
in her career.
But doing so Sunday afternoon had to be special for the University of Wisconsin women's soccer
coach.
Freshman forward Kodee Williams beat two defenders on the right side of the box
and scored in the 79th minute as the Badgers held on for a 3-2 victory over Penn State in a Big Ten
Conference match, the program's first win in State College, Penn.
Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon Homestead) means a lot to the University of Wisconsin
women's soccer team's attack.
The junior forward played an integral role as the Badgers won a pair of Big Ten Conference games
over the weekend at the McClimon Complex, scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Michigan State on
Friday night and helping create Alev Kelter's game-winner in a 1-0 double-overtime
victory over Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
Following what has become a familiar refrain this season, the University of Wisconsin men's
soccer team lost by one goal Saturday night.
But this might have been the most painful ending in a frustrating season.
Matt Eliason converted an 89th-minute penalty kick to force overtime and
Jack Hillgard scored the game-winner when his drive from approximately 70 yards
out bounced in over UW goalkeeper Max Jentsch (Hartland Arrowhead) in the 95th
minute as Northwestern dealt UW its second consecutive 4-3 loss in a Big Ten Conference match at
the McClimon Complex.
A day after his first collegiate hat trick, University of Wisconsin forward Chris
Prince added another item to his quickly growing resume.
The freshman was named the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week in the wake of a
five-goal week that put him among the conference leaders.
University of Wisconsin junior forward Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon Homestead) was
named the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week for women's soccer on Monday.
It's the fourth such honor of her career, tying junior goalkeeper Michele
Dalton for the most weekly conference awards in program history.
The University of Wisconsin men's soccer team put a bit of a scare into Ohio State on Sunday
afternoon, but couldn't find an equalizer and dropped a 1-0 decision to the Buckeyes in a Big Ten
Conference match in Columbus, Ohio.
"In the second half, we felt that we did some very good things," Badgers coach John
Trask said in a news release.
Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon Homestead) and the University of Wisconsin women's
soccer team took care of business Monday night.
Now the Badgers will become Michigan and Michigan State fans.
Nosbusch set up Kodee Williams' opener in the 20th minute and added her
team-best eighth and ninth goals of the season as the Badgers scored all of their goals in a
12-minute span and thumped Northwestern 3-0 in their Big Ten Conference finale at the McClimon
Complex.
It was a tale of two penalty kicks Saturday night at the McClimon Complex.
Freshman goalkeeper Max Jentsch (Hartland Arrowhead) denied Penn State's
Corey Hertzog from the spot in the 13th minute, while senior midfielder
Aaron Nichols converted 15 minutes later as the University of Wisconsin men's
soccer team surprised the 22nd-ranked Nittany Lions 1-0 in a Big Ten Conference finale.
The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team was 17 seconds away from its best Big Ten
Conference finish in a decade.
But Penn State junior Ali Schaefer scored in the 110th minute Sunday afternoon
as the Nittany Lions finally found a way past Haley Kopmeyer and beat Michigan 1-0
in double overtime in a regular-season finale in State College, Penn.
Last Sunday, Ohio State became the latest team to beat the University of Wisconsin men's soccer
team by one goal, winning 1-0 in Columbus.
A week later, the Buckeyes got the same result on the same field, which means another matchup
against the Badgers.
Ohio State topped Big Ten Conference regular-season champion Indiana 1-0 thanks to an own goal
in a regular-season finale, claiming the No.
Much like the University of Wisconsin men's soccer team, freshman goalkeeper Max
Jentsch (Hartland Arrowhead) keeps getting better.
Jentsch collected his first Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week award Monday, and
also was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
The kickoff times for today's quarterfinals at the Big Ten Conference men's soccer tournament
were moved back two hours after the University of Wisconsin encountered travel problems en route to
State College, Penn.
The seventh-seeded Badgers (4-12-2) will take on No. 2 seed Ohio State (10-5-2) at 1:30 p.
University of Wisconsin juniors Laurie Nosbusch (Mequon Homestead) and
Meghan Flannery (Milwaukee DSHA) were named to the All-Big Ten Conference women's
soccer team, the first time since 2005 the Badgers have had more than on player on the top
squad.
Nosbusch has played a role in 10 of UW's 18 goals, scoring nine times to lead the team in
scoring third straight season.
For the first time since 2003, the University of Wisconsin men's soccer team will play in the
semifinals of the Big Ten Conference tournament.
Freshman goalkeeper Max Jentsch (Hartland Arrowhead) made 11 saves for his
third consecutive shutout, and the seventh-seeded Badgers made all five of their shots from the
spot to oust second-seeded Ohio State 5-4 on penalty kicks following a 0-0 tie Thursday afternoon
in State College, Penn.
For the second straight day, Max Jentsch (Hartland Arrowhead) and the
University of Wisconsin men's soccer team withstood a barrage by one of the top teams in the Big
Ten Conference.
Michigan outshot the Badgers 14-1 in the opening 45 minutes, forcing the freshman goalkeeper to
make five saves to keep the match scoreless.
University of Wisconsin freshmen Paul Yonga and Chris Prince
were named to the Big Ten Conference men's soccer all-tournament team after the Badgers advanced to
the semifinals last week in the event in State College, Penn.
Yonga played all 200 minutes in UW's matches, a 0-0 tie against Ohio State and a 1-0 loss to
eventual champion Michigan.
Forward Chris Prince, who led the University of Wisconsin men's soccer team in
scoring this season, was an honorable mention selection on the Goal.com All-Freshman Team.
Prince had seven goals and 14 points for the Badgers, and also was a second-team All-Big Ten
Conference pick and a unanimous choice for the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
