Alcorcon ply their trade in the third tier of the Spanish league and when they came up against
big spending La Liga giants Real Madrid in the first leg of this Copa Del Rey (the Spanish
equivalent of the FA Cup) they were probably just dreaming of the much needed cash the tie would
generate, however the Alcorcon players had other ideas.
Throughout Europe the most successful teams are the ones that spent the most wedge. Chelsea will
be remembered – possibly unkindly- as the purchaser of two league titles, and Man Utd only got
back on top after splashing some significant readies on the likes of Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick
and Anderson / Nani.
La Liga big spenders put Canadian MLS side Toronto FC to the sword in this one with Raul (2),
Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Arjen Robben getting the Real Madrid goals. Former Liverpool
man Xabi Alonso also featured as a second half sub.

! Article Start >Big spenders. To be frank, Peterborough squad are the 'Poundland' of the
Championship. Promoted last year through the playoffs, some of the figures paid for Newcastle
United players in recent times would pay for the whole Peterborough squad. They even make
Scunthorpe look like Real Madrid.
During the off-season, a sense of expectation rushed through the veins of fans of twenty-four clubs
who make up arguably the most competitive league in the world.
There is no big four in this compelling competition - anyone can win it.
With three of the biggest clubs in England relegated from the mighty Premier League, the new
Championship season has an exciting feel to it.
League Two side hit the first of many self-destruct buttons.
League Two big-spenders Notts County have sacked manager Ian McParland.
Speculation had been rife that director of football Sven Goran Eriksson was set to depart Meadow
Lane, just months after he joined the club.
Liverpool were handed a massive boost when four players made a rapid return from injury to be
available for tomorrow's game against Man City.
Glen Johnson, Fabio Aurielio, Yossi Benayoun and Albert Riera were all sent to a physiotherapist,
Marin Kovacevic, in Belgrade.
There they were given an unusual and highly unorthodox treatment of a cream made from Horse
placenta combined with wave-treatment.
What a week we have had! You have to admire Arsene Wenger even more when one sees what the club
is up against this transfer window. The big spenders are jostling for their position in order to
secure the best names available. Manchester United's owners cannot hide their glee at having
secured enough cash to pay off a sizeable amount of the overdraft of interest that continues to
build.
After a quiet couple of days with most of the media focused on their season predictions and the
like, transfer rumours and reports appear to be back in swing. And, with us supposedly leading the
way (surprisingly).
The Guardian is reporting that we are set to tie up a deal for Matthew Upson from West Ham should
we put in a bid of around £15 million:
Manchester City will encounter little resistance from West Ham United if they follow up
their interest in Matthew Upson with a bid of around £15m.
.
This is the first game where the new breed of Manchester City players will take
to the pitch, hoping to start playing a brand of football that the other half of
Manchester have claimed as their own for three seasons in a row.
All eyes will be on the Sky Blues, and unreasonable expectations are already on
the rife for a break into the big league.
This summer may have seemed a bit boring as far as transfers go, but things are finally heating
up. Manchester City and Real Madrid were the overwhelming big spenders during the blistering hot
summer months, but with only a few days remaining the "smaller" clubs are working hard to fill out
their squads for the fall and winter.
After two months, the transfer window has today slammed shut. What a transfer window, eh?
Obviously the big spenders in the Premier League were Manchester City, spending over £115 million.
Mark Hughes was certainly given to freedom to spend money left, right and centre, building almost a
fantasy football team in the process.
The latest Serie A season is now three games in and although it is of course too early to make
any firm predictions, some clear markers have already been laid down. Before the close of the
window it was Juventus who took the lead as the big spenders in Italy, bringing in a number of
players to strengthen the squad, not least of all the Brazilian Diego from Werder Bremen for
£21.

Birmingham could be among the big spenders in January with Carson Yeung the new Birmingham City
owner promising between £20 million and £40 million for Alex McLeish to spend.
In Part 3 of our retrospective Remember When... series we looked at the teams, names and events
that defined the early part of a decade of Premier League football. Now in Part 4 we look at the
rest of the decade, between 2004-2009. Here are the moments we'll remember for a long time to
come:
Remember when Arsenal went a season unbeaten (2003/2004)
In 1889, Preston North End made history by becoming the first Football League side in England to go
an entire league season unbeaten.
Every year it is the same. There will be a club that will drop the Gunners down from the top
four. Two years ago, it was Spurs. Last year it was Villa. This year it is City. Each and every
year, the club has proved them wrong. For a lefty publication, The Guardian really digs high flying
big spenders.
'Water-Carrier?'
It seemed to be all going so well. Reigning champions Manchester United lose the best player on
the planet, former big spenders Chelsea seem to be unable to attract the calibre of player that it
once beckoned without thought, and Arsenal seem to be stubborn in their quest to succeed without
adding some much needed brawn and experience to their ranks.
The Wolves are on the hunt at Old Trafford. And I don't mean the ones that got slaughtered by
Sunderland over the weekend. This is the real deal, the German Wolves known as Verein für
Leibesübungen Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH but more conveniently referred to as VfL Wolfsburg. As the
reigning Bundesliga champions, this is their first foray into the UEFA Champions League, and what
better way to be introduced into the top tier of European football than with a trip to the reigning
English and World club champions (it really hurts me to not be able to put European champions).
According to ESPN Soccernet, the 20 English Premier League teams combined to
spend £70.7million on agent fees last season (counting the January and summer transfer windows).
Some of the big spenders were:
Manchester City: Almost £13 million
Chelsea: £9.
The two big spenders of the Premier League played out an entertaining game at Eastlands as Man
City ran out deserved winners.

Much better. Never underestimate Tottenham's ability to raise your spirits on a gloomy winters
night. And raise spirits they certainly did as a 3-0 win silenced the critics and scribes who were
preparing their 'not-good-enough' themed copy, expecting another Spurs defeat. Instead, the big
spenders from Manchester came out second best as they were outplayed by the big spenders from North
London.
Burnley actually has enjoyed measured success through the first half of the Premiership season, yet
has failed to capture the imagination like last year's neophytes Hull and Stoke City.
