Video Of The Week: The Big Match – April 1979

Twohundredpercent 08 November @ 07:00 PM EST

This week's Video Of The Week takes us back to the race for the Second Division title from the 1978/79 season and features three matches from an episode of London Weekend Television's "The Big Match", presented as ever by Brian Moore. The first match is between from Selhurst Park and is between Crystal Palace and Notts County, the second match is from The Goldstone Ground and is between Brighton & Hove Albion and Blackburn Rovers (about whom Moore says, "they've already been relegated to the Third Division, so at least they'll be relaxed) and the final match is from Roker Park, and is between Sunderland and Cardiff City.

The beach ball goal

Football Fanaticos 19 October @ 04:35 AM EST
I was in a pub in Ã…rhus, casually, and started watching the Premier League match between Sunderland and Liverpool. Not long into the match, saw one of the strangest goals I have seen: Glen Johnson shot on goal for Sunderland, and a beach ball that had been thrown onto the pitch got in the way of the ball, changing its trajectory into Liverpool's goal. Dynamo vs. Galaxy (and other stuff)

The Offside - Houston 16 October @ 02:35 PM EST

Dynamo, it's time to test your mettle. Your final two regular season opponents have also clinched invitations to the postseason. So, knowing that win or lose you'll still be in the dance, does that alter your mindset? Will you be reserved to rest or do you push for custody of the coveted home-field advantage?

Manchester United vs Arsenal, 2-1: Full time thoughts, analysis and player ratings

The Gunning Hawk 29 August @ 04:30 PM EST

So many optimism before the game, so many positive comments on our young players coming of age. But we had to wait for today to judge and unfortunately, many will be asking the same questions which were asked last season.

Until the 60th minute, you can say we didn't deserve to lose as we could have easily been 0-2 up, but if Almunia decides to kill all the good that was done since then, I'm afraid questions should be asked on our players and not on the referee or Rooney.

Drogba was able to shake off an injury plagued 2008/2009 season with an excellent debut in the 2009/2010 season. Drogba (PLTO's Pick for Most Improved Player this season) started off the year with the dramatic extra time goal to put Chelsea over Hull City 2-1.

The Galaxy You Know

Sounder at Heart - Soccer From the Heart of the Sound 13 August @ 08:12 PM EST
Earlier we opened up the pregame analysis with a look at the defensive five in Bruce Arena's current 4-1-3-2 system. Those five have been quite effective defensively, limiting their opposition to the second fewest shots and second best goals against average in the league. But this match is a marquee crusher because of the Galaxy [. Click to continue reading...

FOOTBALLSUP 12 August @ 04:53 AM EST

With only days to go until the start of the Premier League, we take a whirlwind look through the division (no-one likes long, lengthy previews) - count yourself lucky if your side gets more than a couple of lines. We also have our final table prediction, which will no doubt come back to haunt us. That will come in Part Two - here is Part One.

Goals of the Week: Week 21

WVHooligan 10 August @ 01:54 PM EST

So this past week had a load of quality goals. I mean a load that were just great from top to bottom. A couple could really be classed as goal of the year quality too (Landon Donvoan's comes to mind). While I am sorting out the issues with the post I had for the weekend recap, here are the week's best goals to get us started this week.

The Goal of 2009.

The Offside 06 August @ 01:00 PM EST
This is, plain and simple, one of the best goals you will ever see. Not that every own-half goal isn't brilliant, it's just the pace, accuracy and trajectory with which this ball left from the boot of Kazumasa Uesato is beyond perfect. Floating with such harmless intent until landing casually in the goal, almost as [. Click to continue reading...

POLL: Juan Pablo Angel

The Offside - NY Red Bulls 04 August @ 04:03 PM EST

He is one goal from tying the Red Bulls all time regular season scoring record. He is the owner of the best goals to games ratio of any long term player in franchise history. He practically took the team on his back last season and dragged them just shy of the finishing line in the MLS Cup. To say that Angel will rank as one of the greatest Metro Bulls ever is an understatement.

Across The Midwest Pitch - #8

MLS Daily 28 July @ 06:37 PM EST
by Matt Besler - Kansas City Wizards
Hello everyone! Back again this week from "Across the Midwest Pitch."
Just want to give a shout out to the US Men's National Team for their Gold Cup performance and silver medal. Obviously, the final wasn't the result we were looking for and not in the fashion we were hoping (especially to Mexico), but looking at the big picture, everyone on the squad deserves recognition for a successful tournament. The Best Goals of the 2008/2009 season

The Offside: Italy 06 July @ 02:09 PM EST

The new season is quickly approaching (many teams have started pre-season training) and I realized that I never put up a best goals post for last season. So I searched the internet for videos of that showed the "top 10 goals" but I realized that I didn't agree with any of the videos because I felt that so many good goals were being left out.

Chicago at Los Angeles, of course.
Well, it was bigger before the Red Stars put their freaking mouths on the curb the past three games. Arsenal Insider 29 May @ 12:12 AM EST

The 33% Awards

TFC Connected by Ben Van Weelden 24 May @ 01:22 PM EST
The season is roughly 33% done, so I figured I'd go through and give out some awards from the first bit of the 2009 season. Remember, these are based on form to date, not overall historic ability. It's all for fun, so here we go...
33% MVP: Kasey Keller
Honourable Mention: Landon Donovan, Amado Guevara, Brian McBride
Is it any coincidence that both of Seattle's losses came in matches without Kasey Keller (well, he was sent off about 25 minutes into their first loss). Click to continue reading...

Post-Match Buzz: Barcelona 0-1 Osasuna

Barcelista 24 May @ 12:00 AM EST
There's not much to be said about last night's match itself... it was another annoying loss resulting from the crap playing style of get-the-ball-to-Eto'o which simply does not work in any way or form. It holds the team back, so they don't do well, and Eto'o doesn't even take advantage of the chances given him. Click to continue reading...

What Next For Michael Owen?

EPL Talk 20 May @ 04:24 PM EST

Michael Owen injured, unfortunately a familiar scenario.

With his international career apparently over and his club's Premier League status under major threat it begs the question, 'What will happen to Micheal Owen'?

On 30 June 1998, 18 year-old Michael Owen's name resonated around the football world after scoring THAT goal for England against Argentina.

Why Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Lionel Messi

The 90th Minute Soccer Blog 12 May @ 07:36 PM EST

Last year, it was hard to argue against Cristiano Ronaldo as the best player in the world, but this season many have given that award to Lionel Messi. In the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League, Ronaldo has picked up his form and shown why he's still arguably the best footballer in the world.

The Campeonato Brasileiro 2009 got underway this weekend.

League champions São Paulo lost 1-0 away to Fluminense thanks to an early strike from Mauricio. Â

But there were wins for title contenders Cruzeiro, who saw off Flamengo 2-0 in Belo Horizonte with goals from Kléber and Ramires, and Palmeiras who had to come from behind to beat Coritiba 2-1 in the Palestra Itália with strikes from Willians and Keirrison (his 20th goal in 27 outings this year).

After falling behind a goal in the 1st half, the Wizards fought back to earn a 1-1 tie Wednesday night.
