The college football season has been in high gear, with each game turning into a potential playoff
game.
What's unique about college football is that with the season so short and with each game being so
significant, every game essentially turns into a playoff game.
The Puerto Rico Islanders defeated Mayagüez FC 2-0 in the return leg of the SuperCopa
Semifinals to win a spot in the finals with a 4-1 aggregate score.
The Islanders will now face River Plate PR for the first time ever in Puerto Rican football
history. River Plate PR defeated Sevilla FC Juncos with a 2-1 aggregate score after a controversial
1-1 draw last night, that saw River Plate tie the match and win the Semifinal on a corner kick
goal, after the referee erred and overuled a lineman's 'out of bounds' call for a corner kick.
Congratulations to FC København for becoming the first Danish club through to the last 16 in
the UEFA Champions League era. This goes down as one of their biggest successes in European club
competition since they reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup (1991/92) prior to their
merger.
Ah yes, the merger.
The FIFA Club World Cup began in Abu Dhabi today with host club Al-Wahda securing their berth in
the quarter-finals of the competition following a 3-0 win over underdogs Hekari United.
The tournament is being held for the second year running in the United Arab Emirates. Following
the disappointment of national representatives Al-Ahli in last year's competition, in which they
lost 2-0 to Oceania champions Auckland City, Al-Wahda were determined not to suffer the ignominy of
going out in the preliminary round and further local interest in this year's tournament.
The Puerto Rico Islanders and River Plate PR have never faced each other on the field.
Yet the fan rivalry for these two teams has been going for years...
The story of the Islanders is now well known in Borinquen.
Prior to 2010, 2008 was the Islanders best year: The Islanders won the Caribbean's 3rd berth to
the newlly created CONCACAF Champions League.
Independiente are the 2010 Copa Sudamericana champions
In a dramatic second leg of the Copa Sudamericana final Argentinian club Independiente got their
hands on the coveted trophy, and a precious berth in the 2011 Copa Libertadores, following a
penalty shoot-out win after the game had finished 3-3 on aggregate.
>An exciting night for United fans on Wednesday. The lads have definitely played better, of
course, but I was thrilled to bits to see three Brazilian starters in the Da Silva twins, Rafael
and Fabio, and the back-in-form Anderson. All three have promised a lot for quite a while and it
doesn't seem unreasonable to expect them to fulfill that potential now.
Leaders Port Vale travel to struggling Morecambe on Saturday, while bottom side Hereford face
Bradford.
After the recent weather disruption, just one fixture has been postponed - Lincoln's
clash with Oxford - while snow is being cleared off the pitches at Bradford and
Macclesfield.
Now that those idiots Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr are finally out the door at Anfield, it
appears that the time has come for the new Liverpool owners to rebuild that rift between the owners
and the fans with good cheer this holiday season. John Henry, also the owner of the Boston Red Sox,
recently decided to give away free tickets to children as a "small gesture of our appreciation of
the welcome we have been afforded so far" according to club chairman Thomas Werner.
Few teams go into Old Trafford and come out succesfull.
its just one of those stadiums like Nou Camp or Bernabeu where your chances of success are
unlikely.
Of course nothing is impossible.
Maybe that ref wont invent a red card and you can play on an even field..
maybe not.
African champions TP Mazembe have made history defeating Copa Libertadores champions SC
Internacional by two goals to nil to secure a berth in the FIFA Club World Cup final, the first
time a team from outside Europe or South America has achieved such a feat.
Brazilians Internacional, who won this tournament in 2006, had plenty of chances to score in the
game but they found Mazembe's keeper Muteba Kidiaba in inspired form as he made many saves
throughout the game.
The Europa League takes center-stage this week with six places in the knockout stages still up
for grabs.
Twenty-six of the sides in the round of 32 are already known, including eight that will transfer
from the Champions League. A dozen teams remain hopeful of joining them in Friday's draw, including
holders Atletico Madrid who go into their Group B fixture at Bayer Leverkusen needing Aris
Thessalonikii to slip up if they are to advance.
At times this season, and at the end of the last Premier League campaign, it seemed for all the
world that Liverpool's form was suffering as a result of more than a few names who didn't appear to
want to wear the shirt.
With Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel receiving the majority of the criticism in this respect, even
established first team players weren't spared from accusations from those regularly placing a free
sports bet of not trying hard enough to win crucial games or do the job efficiently against lesser
opposition.
